Pitt is up by 1 at the half, kind of a high scoring half but State has done a decent job of keeping up so far. Made several threes early but then cooled off. Need to defend the three better, Pitt is 8-13 so far. But the fact that it’s a one point game with Pitt shooting like that could be a positive sign.

Looks like it will be a battle the second half.   State has had several players step up to score, and Pitt has had several make 3’s.

Man, that’s a super tough way to go out, but also kind of sums up State’s offensive struggles pretty well. Had an open three and an open tap in at the buzzer and couldn’t get either to fall. The lack of timely offense was the difference in this team being pretty good and really good.

Wildly successful season for State though, cannot emphasize that enough. I think they are going to be tournament regulars under Jans. Need to add some more offense for next year, and if they do that and are able to bring back several of the key guys from this group, they’ve got a chance to have an excellent season next year.

We’ll see what happens with State and the transfer portal now. They also had several seniors that still have a COVID year and could return, including Tolu and Jeffries. The only two that I believe are gone for sure are Reed and Stevenson. May have some younger guys transfer due to playing time. They’ll have some more offensive options coming in via the signing class, the Hubbard kid from MRA is really talented and Trey Fort scored a ton of points in JUCO this year. Still need to add at least couple of guys from the portal. Jans has made it abundantly clear that he is very much a one year at a time team builder that will bring in several transfers every year.

State dominates Illinois in the second half to win the play in game today and will now face off against Creighton Friday.

Close game in the first half and we led by 1 point at the half but we just took the game over in third quarter. Great game by our ladies and a good win.

I didn't know the NIT started yesterday also.

USM lost to UAB in the first NIT round last night. Andy KeNIT is the UAB coach. Hate to see USM lose so quickly but happy for AK.

Rutgers and Clemson both lost in the NIT first round.   Both of those teams were considered NCAAT snubs by most.

Clemson I could agree with being considered a snub. Finish tied for 3rd in the ACC and 23 regular season wins. But I guess the non conference losses to South Carolina and Loyola were too much for the committee.

Rutgers was less of a snub to me. 9th place finish in the big 10, 14 regular season losses, and 3-7 in their last 10. They upset purdue back in early January and that seemed to hold them in the convo the rest of the year.

But agreed NIT is starting to remind me of some of the bowl games in college football. More often now the bigger programs just don’t seem to care much if they aren’t in the big game.

Gotta love March Madness, already a big upset with Furman taking down Virginia in their first NCAAT game in 40 years. Last second dramatics too, incredibly dumb turnover by UVA led to the game winning three.

Princeton is one of those teams that you hate to play. They play like a team but more importantly most pundits underrate their talent. They have some players. They had guys that just flat beat the AZ players one on one. So yes they are sound fundamentally but their players are talented as well. It is not a fluke that they compete well and win games in the NCAAT.

We played them back in 1996 in the second round and our overall physical talent was just too much for them. But they had beat UCLA in the first round. They just could not match up with Damper, Jones, Wilson etc.

But going into that game, I was very worried. And we ended winning comfortably but I was never comfortable until late in the game.

Pitt hammering Iowa State and Xavier struggling with Kennesaw State pretty much reaffirms my original thinking, if State could’ve gotten past Pitt then there was a realistic path to the Sweet 16. Ugh. Makes that loss on Tuesday even tougher.

Moot point now but don’t think State or Pitt should’ve been in the play in game to begin with. The Mountain West bubble teams making fools of themselves kinda proves my point.
