Keshawn Murphy transferring from State. Not a huge surprise but by my count that means Hubbard, Matthews, and Shawn Jones are the only regulars expected to return for State next year. Will be a very different roster with a number of portal infusions. Also probably means Jones probably goes on scholarship finally.

KY is quite frankly in a tough spot. With the rise in pay and the competitiveness of college basketball, not many coaches want to jump from a frying pan into the fire. The pressure to win is unrealistically high and most of the fans will never be satisfied even with a FF. They will still be mad that the team did not win the NC. They are 12 years removed from a Natty, 10 years from a FF, 5 years from a SS.
Still great history there but the competition has caught up with them in a lot ways.

I was at the game at State and yes KY won the game but I did not think they beat State. Physically State was the more physical team. Athletically there was not huge difference there. Two points separated the teams at the end in a game that could have easily gone either way.

Kentucky will still be good. They have been the bell cow team of the SEC but I am not sure they will continue to be in the future. They will be in the mix but they won’t be above everyone else like they used to be for decades.

And the top names on their board are turning down the job, too. Drew and Hurley already said no. I doubt Billy Donovan happens due to timing and his team being in the NBA playoffs potentially. So not sure where this ends up going.

Apparently Kentucky is closing in on hiring Mark Pope of BYU.

Um… what?

I realize he’s an alum but what on earth about his resume screams “head coach of Kentucky”? He’s done fine at BYU but nothing spectacular.

Their fans are gonna throw a fit over this one. I personally don’t get it either.

I think both Kentucky and Arkansas may have downgraded at head coach.

What is interesting there is that he was at KY 1994-1996 when State was in the middle of our SS/FF run. He was a good player but Eric Dampier was MAN in the middle. I still believe had we beaten Syracuse that we would have beaten KY in the Final game in 1996.
We beat them in Rupp in 1995 and again in the Superdome for the SECT in 1996.

This maybe one of those “well he is one of Bear’s boys and he played here” type of deal.

Except he played under Pitino of course.

It would be considered a safe hire by them but certainly not a home run hire.

I’m not even sure it’s a safe hire. He has two NCAAT appearances in eight years as a head coach and zero NCAAT wins.

Just saw where State and Memphis are FINALLY going to play a home and home in men’s basketball. 2024 in FedEx Forum, 2025 in The Hump. This has always seemed like a no brainer to me, I mean Ole Miss and Memphis have played each other forever, glad to see State finally doing it too.

The Miami kid was a true freshmen big man this year so probably not fair to totally write him off.

Jans definitely needs to pick it up in the portal though. State still has to find 2-3 more starting caliber guys and a lot of the guys they have brought in for visits recently seem to be headed elsewhere.

Keyshawn Murphy is coming back to State.

That is great news!! If he can stay healthy and improve on the defensive end, the sky is limit for him. I just think he can be a star in the SEC.
If Jans can pick up a few more guys in the portal, then next year’s team could be looking good.

We will see.

If he will buy into Jans defensive demands, he will be a player!  I think he will be one of those that gets better each year with maturity and will be one of their top players by the end of his career.

State is a consistent 3 point threat and a physical post player from having a good team.

Well he is slowly, painstakingly getting there…

Yeah not totally sure what the plan is at the 5 or 3. They’ve missed on some of their targets so far. Don’t necessarily need all Americans at those spots, just reliable guys who can at least be quality role players.
