Bulldogs4
State ends game on a 55-24 run to start the Jans debut successfully 63-44. Texas A&M CC was actually a decent team. They were in the NCAA’s last year and predicted to win the Southland this year. Obviously, just one game but as we said Saturday night in football, a win is a good win regardless of who you are playing. Alcorn State hanging tough with Ole Miss early 18-15 but a long way to go. Dawg83
I don’t know that State has much offensively this year but with Jans you know they’ll get after it on defense

Bulldogs4
I agree. While I loved Coach Howland and appreciate what he did, we just never got to the point of beating the LSU’s, Kentucky’s, Auburn’s, Tennessee’s. We lost so many close games that it eventually got mental. Jans is a refreshing change and he has seemingly resonated with the fan base from the very start. Under CRW and CRS we were always the mentally tougher team. Obviously we did not always win but that toughness was there until Sydney came along and we have never gotten back to that level that we had from 1990-2009. Now I have no idea how this team will perform but if the effort that was given in last nights game continues through the season, I think we will all be happy regardless of the record. And there is some talent on the team. Injuries will be an issue and in basketball they are going to happen. If Tulu stays healthy all season that will be a huge plus. rebmus
I'll be pleasantly surprised if Ole Miss 1/2 of the SEC games this year. If they don't I suspect this is Kermit's last year and I really hate to see him gone. I'm a huge fan of him and his family, even though his family is "True Maroon" ha. I was a big fan of the Kermit hire, I'm hoping it works out for him and OM both.
Bulldogs4
Kermit is still a popular person in State circles. I think he is a terrific coach and person. But like Howland at State, he has gotten Ole Miss to a plateau but just has not been able to climb higher up the mountain. And granted the SEC mountain is very difficult in basketball. But REB you are probably right. If he does not make the the NCAAT this year, it will probably be it. And that will be a shame but it is reality in the current day. Dawg83
Jans seems to be a refreshing change of pace for State. If he can ever get some of the talent that Stansbury and (at times Howland) had, I absolutely believe he could be a home run hire that gets State back to where they were in the early to mid 2000’s. Howland was not all terrible but I found him to be as interesting as a jar of mayonnaise. Just no energy and excitement at all in that program. Time will tell with Jans, but on the surface he seems like a great fit for State and is already a highly regarded coach nationally. maroontide06
Great opening wins by State men's and women's basketball teams. I feel like Purcell has already made an immediate impact there. I'm not trying to predict anything, but I think our women's team can be something special. I knew they would probably beat MVSU, but the way they won that game yesterday felt like a Vic team. maroontide06
Here's another thought along State Women's Basketball lines: Jessika Carter was 4 blocks shy of a triple-double last night in her first game back in over a year and a half. How amazing is that?
Bulldogs4
Great to have her back. If she is healthy, she can be a dominant force. Agree with you that for the first time in three years, the WBB team is on stable footing and hopefully can progress back to what we were 3-4 years ago. Obviously that will not happen overnight. Both men and women teams seem to have a new energy and I think the fans will be excited to attend games again. Realistically, with new coaches, there are going to be some struggles. But as a fan, while I want to win , I will never be disappointed in our players when they are busting their tails every game. Granted it is only one game, but if this continues, it will be a fun season for each squad.
Dawg83
The women should have their best team since Schaefer left. Beyond that I’m not ready to declare much else. You can see some huge mismatches in nonconference WBB games. It is nice to see Carter back, though.
Dawg83
State’s men have Akron in a neutral site game tomorrow, another NCAA Tourney team from last year that played UCLA close. Should certainly be a test, and a loseable game. Edited November 10, 2022 by Dawg83

I can handle losses as long as we put up a 4 quarter fight. If this women's team makes the NCAA tourney and is able to get to the 2nd round I'll be pleased. I really like the depth that we have. It just seems like we haven't had that kind of depth in a while and I think that will help things in the long run.

If they keep that full court press on I think they can wear down Akron offensively. Once our men's team gets fully used to running it, they'll set themselves up to be a hard team to beat and that can get us past the first round of the NCAA tournament. Does this men's team have enough offensive firepower to win games when you need lots of scoring? I'm not so sure, but if they can be effective defensively they may be ok in that department. Jans might need a couple more years to get things (by year 3) where he wants them, but if they get some things figured out this year they definitely can get to the second round of the NCAA tournament. We've needed a coach line Jans for a very long time and I'm glad we have him.
Dawg83
The SEC appears to be really strong on the men’s side this year. I lean toward State doesn’t have enough offense to make the NCAAT, but could give some really good teams fits with the way they play defense. And in a year or two could be a consistent NCAAT team if Jans utilizes the portal like many expect him to.

It's not going to be easy, but no one ever said it would be. I think making the NCAAT is a very basic and minimum expectation that this team has. Maybe I'm overly optimistic, but if there's anyone can do it in year one it's Jans.

But I am high on Jans and think he is probably the best X’s and O’s coach State has had in a long time. I just think he's the type of coach we need to get us to the NCAAT. I remember back when Stansbury was coach and we were regulars in the thing. I also remember hosting #1 Florida in the hump back in 2007 and not having a place to sit. I had to stand the entire game, but man was it electric in there.
