MN is not great but it’s a true road game so you can’t take it for granted. State is now ranked in the Top 25 of the AP Poll which just continues to stun me. Looking at how the beginning of SEC play starts, State really got hosed on the schedule this year. Two of their biggest home games (Alabama and Ole Miss) will be in late December and early January before students are back on campus. Well don't you like being stunned like that? But in reality though what Jans is doing is what the expectation should be. I know that's what it was like when Stansbury was the coach. I really like the energy that he is bringing to this men's basketball team. I think the excitement is there.
Bulldogs4
Which is unfortunate. I am going to try to make one or both those games. The SEC did screw us over though with those two games. Hopefully, there will still be big crowds even without the students there (though there may be some who live close enough to come).
Dawg83
I will be at the Alabama game and really looking forward to it. State might get waxed but it’s fun to feel like men’s basketball is starting matter again in Starkville.
maroontide06
When was the last time both the men’s and women’s teams played in back-to-back basketball games on the same night? I realize the men’s team is on the road at Minnesota tonight, but man I could get used to this because both games are televised.
maroontide06
Well does the B1G Network have an alternate channel? This Wisconsin-Iowa game is in OT.
Dawg83
Haven’t felt like talking about it much with the Leach situation, but impressive road win last night and they are up to 17 in the AP poll now.
maroontide06
The men's team has a game in Jackson tonight. Hopefully that game can unite Bulldog Nation and give State fans some reprieve for a few hours. I think Coach Jans will have them playing well. Dawg83
Don’t want to look too far ahead but Bama at State in two weeks already feels a massive game. Bama is in the Top 5 currently and State could be in the Top 15 by the time we get there. Several games before then, though I feel like they should be fine against JSU and Nicholls this week. Playing a neutral site game against Drake next week may end up being tricky.
Bulldogs4
It is early but Jackson State kicking State’s tail 16-6. UCF is throwing a shutout over Ole Miss 21-0 about half way the first half. Uggghhhh.
Bulldogs4
Both teams have recovered somewhat OM finished on a 11-0 run to cut the lead to 36-26. State finishes on a 20-7 run to lead 31-26 at the half.
Bulldogs4
Kudos to Jackson State for playing a great game.State wins a hard fought game 69-59. Just goes to show you have to come out and play hard and well every game. Though, I wonder if the State team was having a hangover from Coach Leach’s death. It is very easy think that all of our athletes have been shaken by what has happened. Tough night for Ole Miss. Got into a big hole early and just never able to climb out of it. Dawg83
Seemed like a good crowd in Jackson. Encouraging because those games haven’t been very well attended since the Stansbury years.
Bulldogs4
State is showing flaws in these last two games. Basically fortunate to win today. Maybe still a Leach hangover . It is also hard not to get the big head when you are ranked. Plus other teams start playing harder against you as well. Hopefully we will refocus and be better against Drake. Can’t afford to look ahead to Bama.
MSTSatchmo
When they get to SEC play, they’ll run into a player or team that gets hot. They’re in trouble then because State is horrible offensively. With that said, they’re still really good on defense, undefeated and have a couple good wins in OOC play. Bulldogs4
Definitely proud of how we have played so far. Team is giving great effort. That is really all you can ask these guys to do.
Dawg83
The lack of offensive talent is why I’ve been trying to temper my expectations in spite of the hot start. I was not at all expecting an 11-0 start and am thrilled to have navigated nonconference play without any bad losses (even if they lose to Drake that’s a Top 100 NET team so it won’t hurt too bad). But I do feel like pretty soon you may start to see the difference in State and the true top of the league. I’ll be honest with you, State plays Bama and Tennessee four times before the end of January, if you win one of those four games I think you have to be over the moon excited. I will be in The Hump for State-Bama in 10 days but if you made me pick it right now I think Bama wins by double digits. All that said, starting the season this well has afforded you some leeway in conference. If State can just be a .500 team in SEC play they probably make the NCAAT. Just getting in would be a great achievement for Jans in Year 1, anything beyond that and this guy should be in discussion for national coach of the year. Bulldogs4
I am going to the Bama game as well. Bama is much more polished team than we are so I do not expect a win. Certainly possible and our games with Bama are usually wars so I expect this to be the same. But still excited to see our guys play in person and will be pulling for them regardless. Dawg83
State finally lost tonight, neutral site loss to Drake. As will probably be a trend, State played strong defense but couldn’t score like they needed to. Not having Shak Moore likely hurt in this one, may have been the difference in the game. Even so, there’s not a single State fan that wouldn’t have taken 11-1 entering SEC play. I think the goal should probably be to finish .500 in the league, do that and there’s a good chance you’re dancing. In other news, Ole Miss dropped a home game to North Alabama, and Kermit’s seat is definitely getting very very warm. MSTSatchmo
I really thought OM had a legit scorer with Ruffin. He’s coming off the bench. Davis is really starting to feel some heat. Since his first year OM has been a .500 team overall and well below .500 in SEC play. Was that first year just a deal where he benefitted from having Kennedy’s players? Gotta wonder if that’s the case at this point.

Eh, Kermit went to the tournament at MTSU with his own players so I'm not buying he made the tournament at OM "with AK's players." I have no idea why the Kermit experiment is so far off the rails at OM right now, but there's no argument that it's far off the rails. I really hope Kermit turns it around in conference play and is in Oxford for many years to come. I highly doubt it right now.
Bulldogs4
You could see this loss coming from a mile away for State. The last two games we played poorly and I think we have started playing not too lose instead of to win. Not that any loss is good but eventually you are going to lose and it happened today. Hopefully this will take some pressure off the team and we will play better next week against Bama. Plus this was a good time to have a break. Additionally, if they watched the Leach Memorial before the game, they very well could have been emotionally out of sorts. I was out and about this afternoon and listened some of the second half of the Ole Miss game. They seemed to be like State, no offense but was still surprised that they could not eke out a win over N AL.
Dawg83
SEC play starts tonight. Bama at State and Tennessee at Ole Miss. The game in Starkville has been announced as a sellout, hopefully that will make for a great atmosphere. Bulldogs4
Looking forward to tonight. Atmosphere should be awesome. Looking at our team, we have some talent and we have some guys who have been good scorer’s in previous seasons. Hopefully we will start to gel offensively. Defense and the all out effort has been great so far. Maybe tonight we will get some shots to drop. Obviously, Bama is really good. Bama-State basketball games are usually slobber knockers and tonight will probably be no different.
