SEC play starts tonight. Bama at State and Tennessee at Ole Miss. The game in Starkville has been announced as a sellout, hopefully that will make for a great atmosphere.

I like State's chances if Jans can muster up some offense tonight.  If he can't then I see Bama winning this one.  It'll be a tough game either way, but I'm glad The Hump will have a sellout crowd.  The excitement certainly is there.

To be fair, I expect a fair amount of Bama fans to make the trip over. But regardless, this game hasn’t been a sellout in YEARS.

The last sellout I remember was Kentucky in 2012. I was at that game. We had 15 point lead throughout the first half but Rodney Hood suffered an injury right before the half and that hurt our depth in the second half. And we ended up losing right at the end of the game. We just ran out of gas.

Otherwise , I don’t remember the Hump being full since then.

I remember the '07 game against Billy Donovan's #1 ranked Florida squad.  There wasn't a place to sit in The Hump.  It was slam packed and I had to stand against a wall the whole game.  State didn't win that day, but man The Hump was rockin' that day.  It was an electric atmosphere for basketball.

I was given tickets to that game and went, really great crowd that night.

I met MHSWriter at the game briefly that night.

Bama is a really good basketball team. But when Tolu struggles like that, State will have a hard time beating anyone.

Not surprised by the loss, but it doesn’t get any easier for State, next game is in Knoxville.

Bama is good.  They’re good defensively, but they can also shoot 3s.

State was shooting under 40% from the FT line late in the game.  Ended up 50%. 18-36.  They also missed several layups early in the game.

You hate to blame a loss on one guy but the overwhelming majority of those free throw misses were one guy. I don’t ever recall seeing a player struggle that much from the line in a game. Not even Shaquille O’Neal during the peak of the Hack-a-Shaq era.

Tolu will have better games than this one, but this night was particularly rough for him.

Very tough night for Tolu. 3-15 from the FT line.

Free throws did us in tonight or at least prevented us from having a shot to win down the stretch. Alabama shoots the threes well and they hit some big ones tonight.

But I sure like Coach Jans and I believe our future is bright. Bama is a bit better than us especially offensively but we are not far behind them. We did a lot good things, including getting them into foul trouble. Unfortunately we were only 18-35 from the FT line and that will get you beat almost game.

Great crowd and atmosphere and there were not as many Bama fans there as I thought would be giving the fact that they are a top ten team. They had few hundred fans but much less than I anticipated.

Pretty big women’s game today in the Hump. Ole Miss and State are both playing well through the OOC season and both won their openers in conference play. Even though it is NYD it should be a big crowd and great atmosphere. Coach Purcell seems to have the Lady Dawgs trending in the right direction and Coach Yo has done a good job at Ole Miss. Both teams have a good shot at finishing in the top half of the standings this year.

State was down 46-22 at the half at Tennessee.
OM is down 44-23 at the half at Alabama.

OM has the opportunity to make a second half run, but State was terrible offensively again and the defense was just as bad tonight.  Tennessee shot 70% from the field.

Tough SEC start for State, but like OM, they’re starting with the two best SEC teams and both are really good.

Not surprising that we are both 0-2 but thought we would both play better last night.
TN/AL are both top ten teams and are very good.
State and Ole Miss are both decent clubs nothing close to being ranked.

We all knew State was not as good as the 11-0 record indicated but we are not as bad as the 0-3 record is either over the last two weeks.

Saturday’s match up is huge. Still early but the team that wins will feel better about themselves.

My gut says State probably wins an ugly game at home on Saturday but who knows. It felt like Howland could never win in this spot. He’d have an early loss to Ole Miss just about every year and it would totally derail momentum for the season.

I don't bet on sports but this game tempts me.

1. Bet the under.

2. Bet on MSU to win.

I think the first college game my wife ever saw was back in the 1980’s, a State-Ole Miss game that was uglier than ugly. State won but it was like 42-40. The loser was the team that missed the most shots. The kind of game that you go “well we won but there were only lowlights and the final score was hardly a highlight.”

The game tomorrow has that kind of feel to it though these two teams are more talented than those teams were 35 years ago.

But maybe they will surprise us. We will see.
