Dawg83
I’ve never really been sold on the State women this year. They will probably make the NCAAT but not expecting them to be playing for long.
Bulldogs4
Just making the Tournament makes this season a success this year but losing today really puts a chink in the armor.
rebmus
Alabama women came in today as a projected 8 seed and lost to a bad Kentucky team. Bama and MSU are in the same boat now. I think they'll both get in, but it depends on what other teams do.
rebmus
Lady Rebs beat A&M 77-60 to advance to the semifinals. Undefeated South Carolina tomorrow, at least that loss won't hurt the potential seeding any.
sportsmaniac10
Tough loss for State women. Have to agree seems like they were looking ahead to that Ole Miss game. But also overall they just caught Texas A & M on a bad day. Tough to beat a team that goes 11-17 from the 3pt line. They shot better from the 3 than they did from the free throw line (~47%) or the rest of the field (~50%). I also think people are quick to disregard this A & M team because of their record but records aside, the talent is on that A & M team. They just had significant injuries all year. When A & M played Ole Miss in the regular season , they only had 7 players able to dress out due to injury so in reality this team was better than the record indicated. Now State just needs to regroup for the NCAA tourney. I think they have a great shot to get to the 2nd round and give a host team a scare in the second. Despite Schaeffer not being there anymore, they still have that toughness and grittiness and aren't afraid of opponents. Something Ole Miss hasn't quite developed yet. Also under the radar, Southern Miss women won a share of the Sun Belt regular season crown and play in the conference semi-finals Sunday. Sun Belt move continues to pay off for USM. Unfortunately, the men came out and laid an egg in the first game of the conference tournament so they'll be heading to the NIT.
Bulldogs4
You don’t think they have a shot at the NCAA? I thought their NET was solid. An excellent season in any case.
rebmus
Ole Miss women got drilled by South Carolina as expected today. Latest projection has OM as a 7 seed in Indiana's regional and MSU a 10 seed in South Carolina's regional.
Bulldogs4
Maybe the State women will regroup and play well in the NCAAT.

MSTSatchmo
Looks like State will be trying to work their way BACK into the tournament after tonight. Vandy has been insane from 3 and State has turned the ball over a lot.

MSU better win 1, if not 2, in the SECT if they want a bid. 2 SECT wins and it's a lock. 1 SECT win, it's probably an NCAAT bid depending on what happens elsewhere. Lose out in the SECT and it will take a lot of help to get an NCAAT bid. At worst, MSU is an NIT team in Jans' first year... good start for his career at MSU. Bulldogs4
Got some unfortunate calls late that went against us. Not sure how they did not count Jones basket. And it looked like Matthews had all ball with 8 seconds left that would have created a turnover for us down only two. But in the end it was just a tough loss. Vanderbilt has a good team. Must win against Florida Thursday.
Dawg83
That game went exactly like I feared it would. Vandy made a zillion threes and State didn’t play its best on the road. Thought the officiating was a train wreck and the two bad calls involving Jones and Matthews in the closing seconds totally changed the way State had to approach their final possessions. State has to beat Florida on Thursday, no question about it. And honestly State is the better team and SHOULD beat Florida. But you gotta do it. After that, we will have to see. I would hate for the season to come down to needing a win against Bama on Friday, but it’s a possibility. Gonna be a long week of bubble watching. I feel that State is ever so slightly still in even after the loss, but you really need teams already locked into the NCAAT to take care of business in their conference tourneys this week. And you obviously have to beat Florida at a bare minimum.
Dawg83
It appears that most bracket experts still have State in the field going into conference tourney week. That could be significant given how some years the committee seems to disregard conference tourneys other than the auto bids. Like A&M getting to the SEC title game last year and still getting left out of the NCAAT. Obviously have to watch out for bid stealers around the country. But if you made me call it today, I think State makes the tournament if they beat Florida on Thursday. But the conversation changes if other conference tourneys go sideways. rebmus
Women's bracketology has MSU as a 10 seed (next 4 in) in the Stanford regional while Ole Miss is an 8 seed in the Virginia Tech regional. Men's bracketology has MSU last 4 in. Beating Florida in the SECT is probably a must or hope a lot of other bubble teams lose. Win that game, MSU is fairly safe to get a bid. I don't see Ole Miss listed in the men's bracketology, shocking.**
Dawg83
So far State has had some good fortune with other bubble teams losing over the weekend and favorites taking care of business in some of these relevant conference tournaments. The week is still young, however.
Bulldogs4
Definitely need to beat Florida to put ourselves in decent shape. Not a lock but hopefully in good stead. Would like to beat Florida and Bama and remove all doubt.
Dawg83
So is this Chris Beard to Ole Miss thing really going to happen? Look, the guy is a very good basketball coach, but that would be as much of a “hold your nose” kind of hire as you could make. I realize Ole Miss isn’t a historically strong basketball school but they’ll take a PR beating on this one if they go this route.

That specific “situation” at Texas though is one of those that is typically a pattern. Whether there is ever another publicly known instance or not. Hopefully he isn’t a habitual abuser, and OM will have a very good coach. Buckle up for the press though. Of course the only 3 names I’ve heard mentioned all have baggage with them. If you can separate the coach from the human being, you’re talking about a guy that almost won a national title at Texas Tech four years ago. Ole Miss doesn’t ever get the opportunity to hire a coach with that resume in basketball, they just don’t. Having said that… How can one not consider the personal side of this? The guy was sitting in jail not even 3 months ago for allegedly trying to strangle his significant other. I know the charges were dropped, and I know other coaches with baggage have been hired by big schools, but this is an extremely recent situation. I mean we are talking December 2022. I don’t recall a coach with these kind off the field/court questions getting a major conference job immediately like Beard is evidently about to. MSTSatchmo
It’s all about winning. Second chances are easier to get if you’ve got something to offer. I’m sure his contract will be full of clauses. Lol
rebmus
Ole Miss beat South Carolina in the SECT to advance from day 1. SC is a really bad team, but still happy for these young men to pick up an SECT win. It's very likely a short lived good feeling with Tennessee up next, it's definitely better than going home after 1 game. On Beard, IF he's the next coach at Ole Miss: As 83 mentioned.... charges were filed and charges were dropped on Beard allegedly hitting/choking a woman. I have no idea if he actually did it or didn't. It's certainly possible he didn't and it's certainly possible he did and paid her "hush money". As Satch mentioned... Second chances are easier to get if you've got something to offer. I could not agree more. Even if there was a video of Beard beating or choking a woman (let's say she's on the ground while he did it and was not attacking him at all), someone would give him a second chance and the fans of that team giving him a second chance would line up to accept it. IF Beard choked her, the judgement between OM and MSU fans will be funny IF Beard is hired. MSU fans will be on a moral high horse after defending Jeffrey Simmons and OM fans will be defending Beard after riding a moral high horse on MSU signing/playing Jeffrey Simmons with basically no penalty. (Yes, I realize Simmons was 17 or 18 years old at the time- but still). All that to say, IF I was KC... I wouldn't hire Beard with what little I know. Maybe KC has better information on what really happened that day? Back to Simmons, I honestly think he regrets that day and has learned from it. He's a helluva player and I haven't seen a negative article about him since then, I'm happy for him.
MSTSatchmo
I think comparing the school’s involvement in each situation is fair, but comparing the actions of an 18 year old and 50 year old would be a stretch. If the hire is made, the comparisons will most definitely be made though. Lol
MSTSatchmo
On another note, while getting sidetracked reading Twitter comments about OM and Beard, one “college basketball insider” said Beard would take either of the two big Mississippi basketball coaching jobs. When reminded that State has a first year coach doing a pretty good job, the guy said there is talk about Jans being pursued by a bigger name program. There's no debating what Simmons did, only (and I agree, the age difference). There's a debate of what really happened in Beard's accusations.
