And it was. Though when Ole Miss did not win in regulation you could kind of sense that State would win in OT. Season would have been destroyed today. We live for one more game. They are all critical now. I feel bad for Kermit Davis. I was a student when he was a part of the team at State, though I did not know him personally. First trip to the Pavilion, it’s an impressive facility. Very different from The Hump. Big State crowd, felt like they had about 30% of the fans there but the State fans seemed a lot louder. A&M was terrible in OOC games but have been on a roll in conference play. I agree a split would be a good week but my greedy side says we need to win both. Thought it was their style of game, Mizzou just hit some contested three’s in the last minute to win it. Very close back and forth game. Just a tough loss given State’s bubble status, now 6-9 in the league, they may have to win out to make the NCAAT, or either finish 8-10 and then have a deep run in Nashville. I'm sticking with MSU needs 22 total wins to be safe for an NCAAT bid, anything less depends on what other teams do. But that’s a 13-2 A&M team you’re talking about, going to be really really tough. And I don’t particularly like the matchup. For a first year coach, that's a win. Still a tough pill to swallow because of all the close calls. A lot of close losses and “what ifs” from this season, tonight was definitely a big one. Losing a game like that when a 5-10 point guard makes a contested deep three over your center that’s a foot taller than him. I mean what else is there to say really? I will say that from a strictly results standpoint, it’s not that different from a Howland season, but it feels a lot different. Probably because Howland almost exclusively underachieved, whereas this team has seemed to overachieve. All that to say, the NCAAT path isn’t dead yet. It’s very narrow now. But if you win out you’re probably in, if you finish 8-10 then you at least go to the SEC Tourney with a chance if you can win 2-3 games there. Very tough but doable. Win three remaining games plus one tournament game and we are in. Anything less and we are on the outside looking in. Last night was gut wrenching. Coach Williams summed it up. Missouri hit 8 three pointers and we hit 7. The last one for them was from about 24 feet out over a 6’10” player. Not much you can do about that. We are still limited offensively. In the second half we were 0-11 from three point lane. It ended up biting us last night. I liked Coach Howland tremendously but Jans is most definitely a better floor coach. With this team, now I go in to each game with the attitude that we are going to win. Obviously, that does not happen each time out, but that is my mindset. More of a missed opportunity to move upward than a bad loss that knocks them down a peg. I think that’s fair for an OT road loss against a Mizzou team that will be in the tournament. I really think the season for State may come down to this game Saturday. Find a way to beat a very good A&M team on your home floor, you’ll still have a very realistic path to get it. Lose that game and it’s going to be really tough. FWIW, I don’t think State is winning this game. It’s not impossible, and State almost exclusively plays close games so this will probably be another one. Just haven’t had a great feeling on this one for a few weeks. But I have been wrong on this team a lot recently. I had them beating Kentucky and Mizzou and losing to Arkansas and A&M, well I’ve whiffed on the first three of those games so selfishly I hope I’m wrong again! I should clarify, IMO 22 is the magic number to have a "no doubt" NCAAT bid. Get to 22 wins and selection Sunday is watching to see where you go and at what seed. MSU definitely could get an NCAAT bid at 21 wins, possibly even 20 wins... but then it all depends on what happens with other teams, especially the conference tourneys with surprise teams getting auto bids taking up slots of the 68. State's win being huge as it was over Arkansas who is also on the bubble with State for the last few at large bids. Ole Miss moves to 21-7 overall and 10-5 in SEC play. They'll finish the regular season at Alabama on Thursday. A win and they finish 4th in the SEC standings. A loss and they finish 5th and Alabama finishes 4th. State moved to 20-8 overall and 9-6 in SEC play. Unfortunately State finishes the season with a game in Baton Rouge. Assuming the loss, they'll finish 9-7 in SEC play and most likely the #7 seed in the SEC tournament. If State does figure out a way to pull out an upset that will lock up their bid to the NCAA tournament and would put them finishing 5th (if Alabama were to lose) or 6th (if Ole Miss were to lose). 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Call me crazy but I think State gets the upset Sunday. I like this team. They are similar to the men in that the effort is off the charts. With Jessika Carter back in the lineup, I think we can pull off the win. LSU is very good but I think they may be looking ahead and there is not a lot of motivation for them. They are going to a 2-3 seed regardless. Interestingly enough , if State wins and Ole Miss loses, they will be tied in the SEC. After Ole Miss swept the season series between the two of them, who would have thought that was even possible. Doubtful that it happens though. A lot of OM fans have a short list of shady characters. Beard from Texas, Wade from LSU, and Pitino from pick one. All three have had success at major programs though. That is a new one… But I digress, I get it that today that kind of language is not allowed anymore. Times have changed in that respect and that is not necessarily a bad thing. But I can remember getting some foul mouthed butt chewing when I was growing by more than one coach…LOL. I am surprised that Kermit did not have more success at Ole Miss. His tenure has been a bit similar to Howland’s at State. Talent was good but they never could win the close tight games against the better teams consistently. The margin is very thin in the SEC. I am hopeful than Jans can get us to the mountain top. It is tough to get there. At Davis’, age, I would not be surprised to see him retire.
