At the very least you’ll go to the SECT with a chance barring an 0-2 week which would be a disaster. The path to the NCAAT is now just beating teams that won’t be in the NCAAT. They’ll be the one seed playing for an NCAAT bid in Pensacola next weekend. If I’m not mistaken, they are guaranteed at least a spot in the NIT by virtue of winning their conference. Not surprised that Davis was fired but I thought they would wait until the end of the season to make the official. Guess I am old school, that you should never quit during the season and the school should never fire a coach during the season (unless there was a blatant reason). Huge win for State. I'm guessing around an 8 seed in the NCAAT if it started today, hopefully they pick up a couple of SECT wins to move up to a 6 or 7 seed. I'd like to see them win at least one in the SECT to stay at the 7 or even win some more and move up to a 6 potentially. MSU women predicted to be a 9 seed right now. Not a hugely consequential game but important for bragging rights, wouldn’t be ideal for State to lose to their rivals a third time in one season. So a smidge more breathing room though still not so much that the work is done. Important to remember than no teams operate in a vacuum. Conference tournaments going crazy can drastically change the calculus. Having said that, the mid major leagues aren’t very good this year with one or two exceptions, so there may not be as much opportunity for “stolen bids” as some years due to there being more one bid leagues this year. It’s rather simple for State, win the next two and you should be able to start feeling good about things. Losing to South Carolina would be a travesty. If we win the next two I like our chances regardless of what happens in the SEC tournament. Basketball can be fickle at times, but we really don't stand without an excuse if we drop any of these last two regular season conference games. At 8-10 (win tonight, lose Saturday), I’d put State chances very much at 50/50 going into next week. 9-9 pretty much clinches it. Forget the record. Just glad to get the W. Going to be a tough game at Vandy but a game that we are capable of winning. Glad this game was on Tuesday. Gives us another day to rest and recover. Dawg83 Posted March 1, 2023 Share Posted March 1, 2023 Not surprised it was close, State just doesn’t really blow anyone out. I thought SC played well, though, and State didn’t play terrible. With the Georgia loss, State is assured to not have to play in a Wednesday game in the SECT. Looking very likely that those two games will be Georgia vs LSU and Ole Miss vs South Carolina. State can still realistically finish anywhere from 6th to 10th. They’re currently tied for 8th with Florida and Arkansas. In terms of the NCAAT, I think it’s possible State has now done enough to get in, but boy would you feel more comfortable if you could beat Vandy. The level of stress State will have around conference tournament week will be largely determined by whether they win or lose on Saturday. Win, you should start to feel comfortable. A lot still up in the air but it appears that they’ll open with either Auburn, Arkansas, or Florida next week. Badly need this win against Vandy first, though. Often times, it is difficult to sustain that kind of game back to back. We have not really shot the ball well the last two games. Hopefully Saturday, we can shoot well and maintain the defensive intensity. Our team has played well on the road for the most part. Maybe we can get a “W” Saturday. Get a win Saturday and win one in the SECT and we are comfortably in the Tournament. But Saturday is the next biggest game on the schedule. Significant injury for Vandy last night with Robbins, he had been on a major tear for them lately and would’ve potentially been a big matchup problem for State (he’s a seven footer that can shoot threes). Granted, they did still beat Kentucky without him available for most of the game, but UK also had an injury to their point guard. When State played Arkansas I mentioned how much I disliked having to play in Bud Walton, well Memorial Gym is even worse in my eyes. You just know Vandy is liable to make about 20 three pointers anytime you play there. Any long time State fan will never forget the infamous Shan Foster game in 2008. There was also the Xavian Stapleton deal at the free throw line a couple of years ago that ended very badly. I am mentally preparing myself for State to lose on a buzzer beater three that keeps them out of the NCAA Tourney, would not be the first time something like that has happened to them at Vandy. But State absolutely needs this win, other bubble teams are getting some really strong wins this week. The margin for error is razor thin right now. I suspect they'll get an NCAAT bid UNLESS there are too many "stolen bids" from surprise conference tourney winners. I figure they were a lock with a win over A&M today, now they have to hope not too many upsets happen.
