Interestingly enough, one of Pitt’s starters (and leading scorer I think) is very familiar with State. Blake Hinson was a former starter for Ole Miss under KD.

Will be an interesting match up. Glad to see at least one Mississippi team get in on the men’s side.

Hinson has over 90 made three pointers this season, shooting 38%.

Gosh I will never forget the game where Hinson went off in The Hump and then proceeded to do absolutely nothing the rest of his Ole Miss career.

Three of those double digit scorers are guards.   Hopefully for State, they aren’t a three point heavy team.

If State does manage to move on to the weekend, I saw Iowa State allows just 20 PPG in the paint.  That’s not a good matchup.

Perhaps, but I also won’t pretend a 19-13 six seed that went .500 in their conference is unbeatable.

Gotta beat Pitt first, though, obviously.

Tough draw for Ole Miss women. The record isn’t bad and really only 1 bad loss at Auburn. , but just no signature win. Several wins against NCAA teams (State, Bama) but really needed 1 against a Tennessee or someone like that. Will be an interesting match up with Gonzaga. Similar to the men, Gonzaga women have ruled the WCC for years but haven’t been as strong nationally as the men. Will definitely depend which Ole Miss team shows up. will it be the team that took South Carolina, Utah, and Oklahoma to OT or will it be the team that turns the ball over ~25 times a game and losses to Auburn and struggles to beat the weaker teams on the schedule?

State women have an interesting draw. Illinois has a big time win over Iowa and then was top 25 in early February. Had a few bad losses to Purdue and Nebraska and also similar to Ole miss lacking a lot of quality wins. But if they make it through the first game then I like their chances against Creighton in the second round.

neither has a great draw but I give the advantage to State women to make it further in the NCAA than Ole miss.

Would be ironic if we beat Pitt and Iowa State and then get payback against Xavier for the loss they gave us about twenty years ago when we were a two seed.

That game. Ugh. Xavier was hitting threes from the parking lot. They made a half court buzzer beater at half time and I knew we were in a big trouble then. It felt like they made 30 threes in that game.

Auburn getting to play in Birmingham as a 9 seed is kind of a crock. Would not be happy if I was Iowa or Houston.

State got a fair draw in terms of geography, if they can beat Pitt. Greensboro isn’t a bad spot, especially when you don’t have to play one of the Carolina schools.

Having said that, Dayton is a lot closer to Pittsburgh than Starkville, so it may be a pro-Pitt crowd for that game.

Why is that a crock? When I saw back in January that a regional was in Birmingham I knew that both Auburn and Alabama would probably be playing there. We all know the NCAA is about money and putting Bama and Auburn in Birmingham will for sure sell out that regonal.

In fairness, you are going to end up with some teams close to home and others farther away and then some really far away. Auburn will certainly have some advantage there but they still have to beat the other team on the court. Lot of moving parts when you are dealing with 60+ teams. At least for this tournament, Auburn hit the jackpot. We were in BHM in 2004 and had 90% of the fans and Xavier still beat us (as 83 noted, they hit every three they threw up, or so it seemed)

I just don’t believe as a 9 seed you deserve the benefit of playing a de facto home game. Bama in Birmingham makes perfect sense. Auburn, as the third lowest seed in their pairing, getting the home court advantage? Nah, don’t like it.

I think the Xavier game in ‘04 was in Orlando. State was in Birmingham in 2003 when they lost to Butler. Me and my uncle had tickets to the second round game on Sunday (would’ve been against Louisville I think) because surely there was no way they’d lose to Butler…… This was when nobody had ever heard of Butler yet.

So if Iowa was playing Auburn in the state of Iowa you would have an issue with that too? LOL

Yes. I think as a 1 or 2 seed you have earned the right for a geographic advantage. Don’t think you have at all as a lower seed.

It’s like B4 mentioned with State having to play Texas in Dallas in 2002, State was the 3 seed and Texas was the 6 seed. I don’t believe a lower seeded team should have a geographic advantage over teams seeded higher than them, certainly not in the first two rounds.

Totally hypothetical, but let’s say State or OM had an amazing year and earned a 1 seed. Their reward was being sent to Charlotte and being paired with an 8 seeded Duke or North Carolina. You don’t think the 1 seed has a legit gripe there?

I get your point. But lets put the shoe on the other foot. If MSU was an 8 or 9 seed but got sent to Birmingham you would be very happy would you not?

Yes but that’s a different conversation lol. I’m sure Auburn fans are pumped. Doesn’t mean they didn’t get a huge break.

For what it’s worth, even in B’ham I don’t think Auburn beats Houston in the second round. But it could definitely help them beat Iowa in the first game.

Looking at this tournament field, really think it’s wide open. Some will say Bama is the clear favorite and maybe they are. But for some reason I just don’t think they end up winning it. In fact, kinda think they get bounced by the Sweet 16 or Elite 8.

My biggest thing with State being able to advance is they are going to have to not be the worst shooting team in America for a little while. I know defense is what has carried them all year and that will continue to be the case. But this whole business of going 1-15 or 2-18 from three will get you sent home in a hurry. Gotta shoot at least a respectable percentage.

If you told me State shot 25% from three tomorrow night then I think they win. That’s a very bad number and it’s still significantly better than what State has been shooting from deep.

Ole Miss hired Chris Beard.

This will be... interesting.

I noticed on 247, OM has two 4* players in the portal.   I wonder if Beard can keep them in Oxford.   One had already transferred from Duke so he should have to sit out of he transfers again.

As with any coaching change, some players will be lost and some new players will be gained.

We'll see next season if the gains are > than the losses.

Pitt is 8-13 from Three in the first half and we are only down 1 point.

If they keep shooting it that well from three in the second half we are toast.

Hopefully they will cool off some and we can continue to dominate on the inside and come away with a win.

We will see what happens.
