I know this is a new season, but with just decent shooting last year, State would have been a Sweet 16 team.   The first game is definitely a positive sign.

I don’t know what the end result is going to be but this State team definitely has a higher ceiling than last year’s. They arguably achieved their ceiling last season as bad as they were on offense. Teams that shoot that poorly don’t usually make the tournament.

I thought all offseason they had a great chance to be a Top 25 team with second weekend potential, last night didn’t do anything to discourage me on that.

Ole Miss moves to 2-0. I watched pieces of each of the first 2 games... as expected, this team has a long way to go.

We'll see how the team gels as the season goes under Beard in his first year.

Beard and Jans are cut from the same cloth in terms of being high end defensive coaches. Going to have some total rock fights in the State vs Ole Miss series as long as those two are in Mississippi.

I feel similar about Ole Miss as I did State a year ago. Making the NIT is a success, making the NCAAT is a tremendous accomplishment.

State I think probably has higher expectations and a higher ceiling of the two teams. Looks like OM’s first real test will be Temple in a couple of weeks. State should win their next two before heading to Mohegan Sun next weekend, where they’ll play Washington State and then either Northwestern or Rhode Island.

I say State should win the next two (UT Martin and North Alabama) but early season CBB gets weird. Still vividly remember Stansbury having a much hyped team at State that lost its season opener to Rider, and it ended up being a big reason they were on the wrong side of the bubble.

We play Nicholls November 24th. I think this ensures that our guys will not overlook them.
I know LSU maybe bad but that is a heck of a good win for the Colonels.

Nicholls nearly beat State last year right before Christmas. Had the game winner rim out at the buzzer.

Wow. I just watched the condensed version of the NW and State game. We were down 11-0 right out of the gate. And were down by as many as 12 in the first half to a very good team. Hubbard looks like a modern day Chris Jackson. Incredible range and fast as lightning. After the early flurry of turnovers I thought we played well and then the second half, we really dominated overall.
An excellent weekend for the hoop dawgs!

State now in the Top 25 after this weekend. If you’re looking for the next big test, maybe it’s at Georgia Tech next week, but State will be favored in that game, and GT just lost to UMass Lowell.

State plays Nicholls on Friday who beat LSU but still has a losing record. You’ve got a decently tough stretch in December with four consecutive games against Tulane, Murray State, North Texas, and Rutgers. But I think there’s an excellent chance now that State can make it through nonconference with two or fewer losses. Rutgers in Newark is the only OOC game they might not be favored in.

How bout Jackson State beating Missouri yesterday?

State laid a huge egg at Georgia Tech. Just a total no show on the road against a not very good team. First time they really felt like they missed Tolu and it showed in a big way. Still think this team will be fine but definitely a wake up call after what had been a strong start.

A loss like that almost wipes out the credibility they earned in the first 6 games.

If you’re going to lose a game like that it’s best to lose it on the road. State dropped a very similar game in Athens last year and it didn’t hurt them much.

I would not put too much into this one game. You never want to lose a game but every once in a while you need to experience failure so you can reset and play better.
It is still early in the season and basketball is still one of those games where on a given night you can be beat by a team not as a good.

I went to the game against Nicholls and though we won I got the sense that we were playing a bit lackadaisical during that game. As if winning was a given instead of being earned. And  if I noticed it I suspect Coach Jans did as well. He can use this game as a good coaching opportunity going forward.

That was impressive. Not sure how good NC State is but that was easily the best OM has looked this year. Memphis coming to Oxford on Saturday is suddenly interesting.

Easily OM’s most impressive game this year.  They have had a couple close calls against less impressive teams.
