I think it’s cool that State is playing in Tupelo today and Ole Miss/USM are playing in Biloxi next week. State normally plays a game in Jackson but it had gotten really stale over the years, people weren’t showing up anymore, and it doesn’t help that the Big House is a dump. Perfectly fine with giving some of these other venues a chance to host.

Would like to see State play a game at the Landers Center in Southaven at some point. Or honestly just play Memphis period. OM does it every year, State never does. Only meeting I can recall between State and Memphis in hoops in the last couple of decades was in the ‘08 NCAA Tourney in Little Rock.

Definitely agree that when school is out, playing a game in TUP or BIX makes great sense.

Last year when State played JSU in JAN there were only 3200 in attendance. Almost all were State fans. Where were the JSU fans? And they almost beat us. Should have been 7-8K in the coliseum.
I would think in TUP there will be at least 5K+ today.

I’m curious to see what the Tupelo crowd looks like. Only time semi-recently that State has played there was during the Rick Ray era when nobody cared about the program, so that’s probably not a good gauge of what to expect. I’m sure the crowd today will be better than that one was in 2013/2014/whenever the last Tupelo game was.

State trimmed down its rotation today, that seemed to help. The mass subbing nearly got them beat by Murray State, so Jans didn’t even sniff anything like that today.

Fairly big game in Newark on Saturday again Rutgers. Would be a very solid nonconference win if State can get it.

Did not realize this while watching the game (I was also watching my 18 month old so the game didn’t get my undivided attention), but State only had 3 turnovers the entire game. And North Texas wasn’t playing bad defense or anything. Cannot recall a college basketball game where one team had that few turnovers in 40 minutes of play.

Midweek NET update, State is now 35, Ole Miss is 57.

If OM can get by USM on Saturday, I think they’ll go into SEC play undefeated but probably lose pretty quickly, as the first conference game is at Tennessee. Yeesh. But they do have several winnable SEC games immediately following that.

State has the big game against Rutgers on Saturday, then Bethune Cookman, then an absolute gauntlet to start SEC play. 8 of the first 9 SEC games are against Top 60 NET teams.

OM is definitely about to take a few on the chin but ironically that NET might even rise with the right loss. It's a long haul. Hopefully they can just continue to improve and play well enough when it counts most.

With an undefeated nonconference, Ole Miss likely only needs 8 or 9 SEC wins to make the NCAAT.

I’d put that number at 9 or 10 for State. I just think you don’t want to be anywhere close to the bubble if you have a SWAC loss on your resume.

FWIW, State got in with an 8-10 SEC record last year but they only had one nonconference loss and had unbelievably good fortune with no stolen bids in other conference tourneys. And even then they got shipped to Dayton (I still think they were underseeded, but I don’t get a vote).

It will be hard to bank on there being literally zero stolen bids again, so for both teams you definitely want to find a way to be safely clear of the bubble by early March.
