Couple Observations:

I have South 5A this same way.

Florence to Cleveland on a week nite for basketball or softball is an unforgiving trip !!

South Jones , Northeast Jones, and Laurel to Natchez even worse. 144 miles one way.

Natchez is honestly a bad trip for just about anyone honestly.

On a weeknight its a horrible trip for sure. But I have been able to either leave work early or even take me a day of vacation on a Friday and its really not that bad of a ride over there. That said, I would not have wanted to make the trip from Meridian or Wayne County when they were in the same region back in the 2000s and early 2010s

Why in the world hasn’t the mhsaa posted anything to their website yet? All coaches have seen the new classes

Traditionally the schools get a chance to appeal their numbers, classification and prefered Region. I can see Noxubee preferring to stay south. I can see Meridian or Murrah attempting drop to 6A. Not sure either will improve on travel in 7A vs 6A.

As to why MHSAA has not posted these numbers you need to go to page 13, 8.16 and 8 in the process of class and region placement. I believe there coaches and AD's have region placement in hand. These regions will only be for major sports. They should be official next week pending appeals.

Better question is, has that ever worked?

If you turn in the same set of numbers to MHSAA and MDE then absolutely not. If your Meridian or Murrah maybe maybe not. If your Quitman and you want to stay 4A knowing your losing NE Jones and don't want Noxubee in your region then maybe maybe not. And 3A Region 5 and 6 will be interesting to see who gets in.

So the answer is "never".

I've always perceived and believed the association has been way too rigid about schools on the lines playing up or down to possibly create more equity in travel. If there is a situation where a school just at or below the cutoff would find themselves making too many long trips for all sports just to keep things even when the enrollment difference is miniscule, then they should be willing to let them appeal their placement. I gather that doesn't happen and maybe never has but it should.

Fuel isn't cheap and we are talking about kids making lengthy trips, sometimes during school days and nights, just to play a regular season game and also parents and fans who are often unable to travel due to the circumstances. This impacts both the traveling and hosting schools.

I think a classification committee should be formed and determine class/districts by a combination of attendance/location/competitiveness. This would make things much more competitive and travel would be reduced.

How about this district:

Meridian

Laurel

Hattiesburg

Wayne Co

West Jones

South Jones

That would be a great combination of teams. All along I59 and lots of old rivalries included. And most of this teams are competitive with each other.

You got 3 6A and 3 5A there.  And left out 5A to be northeast jones.
