Kyle McCord to Syracuse was another odd one to me.

Supppsedly State took a shot at McCord, and he chose Syracuse.

Did anyone see Raiola’s announcement on social media.  Good grief.  That dude better win 3 Heismans and at least 1 1/2 national championships.

What does any of that have to do with schtick? They both have the same exact personalities which you said wouldn’t work in the NFL.

I don’t think they have the same personality at all. Both are unique guys with seemingly fun senses of humor, sure. Lane is a guy who likes to troll people on Twitter and publicly feuded with an NFL owner when he was a head coach. McDaniel is just kind of a quirky, unconventional dude with a Yale degree who seems more likely to work in IT support than be a football coach. I don’t know that’s he’s as adversarial or confrontational as Lane can be, or maybe I should say that Lane was at one point.

I mean the fact that one has been out of the NFL for 15 years while the other has remained in the league and succeeded in that time kinda proves my point. There seems to be something about McDaniel that NFL organizations just value more than what Kiffin brings to the table.

I don’t think it’s unfair to say the Kiffin has had some maturity issues at different points in his career. I don’t think they’re as bad now as they once were. But I mean to be frank, the only reason this guy ever ended up at Ole Miss was because previous failures made him start over and re-establish himself. And kudos to him for doing it.  Ole Miss lets him be himself and they’re better for it. NFL organizations just operate differently though. So I get why there’s reluctance by a lot of teams to give him another shot.

Had not read it until I saw your post. Geez man. That’s um…. Interesting. Yeah, you talk like that, you better deliver big time.

Max contract is four years so they just rolled it over a year. Money is not the issue for Kiffin. I think he is enjoying himself and he will be there for at least several more years.

In today’s world “nobody stays in one place anymore” to quote a song from many years ago, ironically. At some point Kiffin will leave but I am not so sure it will be in the next year or two.
By any standard he has been successful to this point. Leach’s untimely death really fouled things up as both State-Ole Miss were in good stead and the next 5-6 years would have probably been fun for us fans. Alas, it was not to be so you Ole Miss guys need to enjoy the wave you are on right now.

It’s awkward to talk about this now that Leach has passed and frankly a moot point now, but while he did have a degree of success in the short term, the way his staff handled the recruiting was going to present problems in the long run

Now, do I think State would’ve been much better in 2023 with Leach around? Absolutely. It’s why most State fans were anticipating somewhere between 7 and 9 wins. But I would’ve had some concerns about the talent level of the roster once that core group of players finished up, which they now have albeit under different circumstances.

State is still waiting to hear on Stonka Burnside and Daniel Hill who don’t announce for a couple of weeks, but otherwise it feels like a pretty strong finish to the HS class for State given where they were a few weeks ago. It’s still not a great class but pretty much what their historical average has been. But keep in mind that 3 weeks ago this class was ranked in the 50’s or 60’s.

I think they probably sign Burnside, and they could get Hill but my gut tells me a last minute Bama push sends him to Tuscaloosa.

Perfect timing to have instate guys like Echoles, Franklin, Rush and Beavers on the DL.

State dropping the ball on DL recruiting with this high school class has been a VERY sore subject in State circles. Those kind of talents (at least 1 or 2 of them) usually end up in Starkville. That’s something that has to get fixed immediately going forward. You can’t screw up your own bread and butter.

That’s more on Turner and Arnett than Lebby for this cycle, as that group was a done deal to OM before Lebby ever got here. But it’s on Lebby to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

With the DL that Statw has in the league now, it was a surprise to see them strike out on that position group.  It’s what has kept them in several games over the years.

Just out of curiosity what is taking so long on the uncommitted players?

If you’re talking specifically about Hill and Burnside, I think they are wanting to announce at whatever all star game they are in a few weeks from now. Although there is some speculation that they may have quietly signed with their school of choice today and asked them to hold the announcement.

If you look closer at it, I’m less surprised than some would be. State has not recruited well on defense in years. They were relying heavily this year on sixth year guys that committed to State when Dan Mullen was still the coach, or in the early Moorhead days.

I was under the impression today was the day. If you can enroll in January then commit today. Unless they are still bidding out their nil deals. Is the money that much to wait on? Are grades an issue? I’m out of the loop. Why wait when 99 percent of the country is complete.

Some are waiting on an offer from a better school, some are waiting on an offer from a school with friends on the team, most are waiting on the best NIL deal they think they can get.

JMHO-

Hill wants a solid offer from Bama and will take it if he gets it... otherwise he's MSU bound. I don't think he's "high" on the NIL list for either school.

Burnside is leaning MSU if all things are equal. IF Ole Miss offers a significant amount more in NIL, he'll likely sign with Ole Miss.

I do wonder if Hassell Franklin was still alive, would MSU be doing better in these NIL deals? He did a TON for MSU during the under the table days, I'm sure he'd do a ton for them above the table also if he was still around.

What do you mean when you say a solid offer from Bama? Like NIL wise?

Lots of State fans getting upset over Kiffin’s shot at their program.

I think he was just telling the truth about where each program is and still selling his school to recruits.  Some say it was disrespectful to Leach, but I disagree.  I don’t think there was any connection to what he said and Leach.  More of a jab at Lebby now that I know they have some bad blood from Lebby’s time under Kiffin.

Three thoughts on this.

1. It wasn’t inaccurate

2. I didn’t think it was a shot at Leach

3. It was still maybe a dumb thing to say and something that will be thrown back in his face A LOT if Lebby turns State around and starts beating him.

Houston Nutt said something similar in the spring of 2009 and it blew up in his face. Dan Mullen beat Ole Miss his first three tries, then he got a little over confident and struggled in Egg Bowls the rest of his time at State.

Point being, the pendulum in this rivalry can swing the opposite direction pretty quickly. I’m only 30 but in my lifetime, I’ve seen both sides gain and lose the upper hand numerous times. Including times when the gap seemed large.

He didn’t say anything that isn’t true. State fans wanna make it look like he said something disrespectful about a guy he considered a good friend and they only knew as a coach.

I didn’t take it as a Leach jab at all and I think anyone making it out to be that way is reaching.

I still think he probably shouldn’t have said it in general. It may be true, and heck a lot of people on both sides think that… But saying things like that in his position has a tendency to come back around sooner or later.

Lots of State fans mad at Noreel White too. Never seen so many grown adults going at a high school kid in my life. I’m not the biggest fan of his actions either but never would I act the way I’ve seen some State fans on social media.

Every fan base has its lunatic fringe. Every single one. Thankfully we don’t get much of it from either side on this board.
