Dawg83
I will also give Ole Miss credit, they made some really tough shots at times. Caldwell is this year’s Blake Hinson I guess but Murray is a star. That guy is a total game changer at point guard.

You have to be able to find the hidden talent with the portal. Murray comes from St Peter’s to OM and averages 14/game in the SEC. Taylor goes to State from Marshall and he isn’t on the team anymore. Dawg83
Pretty wild to see the turnarounds that South Carolina and Ole Miss have had. Two worst teams from last year are both currently 18-3. Wow.
Bulldogs4
Game basically went the way we thought. Ole Miss was better defensively creating turnovers, State won the rebounding battle. State actually shot FT’s well until the two crucial misses by Matthews. So while the teams are built differently, they are pretty evenly matched. Credit to Ole Miss for protecting the home court and making a couple of more plays than State to win the game. Agree with 83, SC and Ole Miss are the surprise teams this year. Although we knew each would be improved but nobody saw those being 18-3 and at the top league. Huge game for State @ Bama. We have still not won a road game although last night was an improvement. This one is an opportunity to finally win one.
maroontide06
There was a glaring stat that cost State the ballgame and that is turnovers and points off turnovers. If State didn't turn the ball over, they wouldn't lose that game. You can't go on the road in the SEC and not protect the basketball and expect to win. Maybe they'll get better at that. I think there’s a strong case to be made that State lost this one late in the first half and early in the second half. In the span of about 8 minutes of game time State went from up 7 to down 10. And from that point on it was a battle just to keep things within one possession.
Dawg83
State’s NET didn’t budge after the loss, they’re still at 37. Ole Miss moved up 4 spots to 53.
Former Coach
For State your ALL SEC guy has to show up and he didn't. He has had some good games but to me plays entirely too soft. At 6'10 he doesn't go to the goal with authority. If he played with the same physicality that Matthews does he would be almost unstoppable. I don't understand all this NET, Quad win stuff. With eyeball test OM is defiantly at tourney team and I'm not sure about State. They have the two wins vs top 10 teams but that's about it. They are too Jekyll and Hyde. Most experts have State and OM very close to one another in the pecking order. I think both would be 8 or 9 seeds if the season ended today. Dawg83
If you wanna project this thing out, State will likely be favored in 5, maybe 6, of their remaining games. And then there are a couple of other games where the lines should be close. So the schedule seems to be there for the taking. It would be a big disappointment if State can’t win enough to stay in the tourney with this remaining schedule. 5-2 in February should be the objective, IMO. With Ole Miss at 5 SEC wins and two games against a terrible Mizzou team still on the schedule, they’re really going to have to choke to not make the tourney. Literally just beat Mizzou twice and then find two other wins somewhere and you’re fine. Edited January 31, 2024 by Dawg83
Insideradvantage
You State boys don’t fret too much. I’m very happy with our season so far, but y’all will beat us in Starkville. I have little doubt.

I know it was a little lucky for OM that a situation came up that made him available. And they definitely took some heat for hiring him and I’m not even gonna say it wasn’t warranted. But there’s still no denying that this guy is one of the top coaches in the country. I don’t know if he stays at OM one year, five years, ten years, who knows. But while he’s there (and if he can make the off court issues a thing of the past) y’all have an excellent coach. Don’t get me wrong, I like Jans a lot too. This is the best in-state coaching duo since….? I think it’s got a chance to be the best ever. What’s crazy is there have only been two seasons ever where State and Ole Miss were both in the NCAA Tourney (2002 and 2019). If it happens this year it would only be the third time. rebmus
MSU's SEC schedule started tough and ends much easier. Ole Miss's SEC schedule started much easier and gets tough. Both teams are in decent shape to get 9 SEC wins and a NCAAT bid, but it sure isn't a given it will happen for either. Ole Miss really needs to beat Auburn in Oxford this weekend, the next two games (at SC and at Kentucky) are most likely losses.

See I think you’re playing with house money in all three. 0-3 isn’t gonna kill you, and just winning one would be huge.
Dawg83
Florida just won in Lexington. SEC might break their previous record and get 9 teams in the tourney this year. Mizzou and Vandy are beyond hope. Arkansas and LSU likely have too much ground to make up. Everyone else is alive, although Georgia is fading, they’ve blown some golden opportunities to get in the mix. He is indeed good. That’s obvious. As for catching heat for hiring him that was all from the outside seems like. And if you don’t let it stop you or bother you what the hell. It never bothered me for a second. Keith Carter is also very good btw.

Dawg83
State and Ole Miss both have big games Saturday but can I interest you in 0-8 Missouri at 0-7 Vandy? A WINNER MUST BE DECLARED. Edited February 1, 2024 by Dawg83
Bulldogs4
Sometimes we are guilty of nick picking our own teams. So after day of reflecting on Tuesday night, I think Ole Miss just deserves credit for a tough win. The State guys played with great effort and that is really all you can ask of your team. They are going to make mistakes but I think the other night they were mostly made at full blast. I do agree with the analysis that the end of the first half is where Ole Miss won the game. Yeah I didn’t think State played that poorly at all. Just a game that could’ve gone either way and the home team came up a little bit more clutch. I only saw the last minute of the first half. As soon as Hubbard went under that screen you knew it was going to be tied at the half. Bulldogs4
State women did just what I expected. Beat LSU and then almost lose to a terrible Kentucky team. The operative word being “almost” as they did persevered in OT and also the game was played in Rupp Arena. That had to be cool deal for the State women especially since we eeked out a win in OT. Really big game @A&M Sunday. Need to win there to stay in upper quadrant of the conference.
