Still think Ole Miss can lose at Auburn on Saturday and be totally fine. State cannot afford a home loss to Vandy. State will likely be a comfortable favorite, Ole Miss a comfortable underdog. But who knows what will actually happen.

It’s kinda playing out close to what I expected so far. Both are good teams, but not in the upper crust. Will likely hover around .500 and stay on or just above the bubble most of the year.

Looking at some metrics, pretty interesting that State is 33 in the NET and Ole Miss is down at 63. Best I can tell I think State is being rewarded for mostly playing road and neutral site games in nonconference, whereas Ole Miss had more home games. Also think OM is being docked for playing a lot of close games against bad teams early on. That Detroit team that OM beat by 1 still hasn’t won a game this year.

Both will need to find more Q1 wins from somewhere.

Same. A sweep by either side is fairly uncommon. Especially when both teams are at least halfway decent.

I agree on a split.
Although,  I think OM is a bad matchup for State.  They have the height and length to give Smith trouble in the post.   Those two 7 footers also give OM 12 fouls to use against him.  In the backcourt, OM has more playmakers and shooters.

Yeah State has gotta have a second guard step up other than just Hubbard. Davis and Moore have regressed this year. Taylor is literally MIA, no idea what the deal is there, but he was a 20ppg scorer at Marshall and isn’t even with the team right now. I like the flashes that Fort has shown the last two games but he needs more minutes and has gotta be more consistent.

What’s the deal with Taylor?  I haven’t seen that he’s re-entered the portal.

“Personal issues” in the word.

Not gonna lie though, he did not look impressive even when he was playing early in the year. Shot wasn’t falling and he was a liability on defense. Not nearly physical enough to defend SEC guards. State had to make a large NIL bid to sign him over several other SEC schools and it just hasn’t worked out whatsoever.

This game has been straight out of last season for State. Playing good defense but disgusting offense. Going to win barring a late collapse but not a pleasant watch.

Jans has gotta figure out what he wants to try to do with his backcourt. That group has been incredibly bad in recent games. And even when someone like Fort provides a spark, he doesn’t get that many minutes.

Also, I don’t know how an SEC basketball team full of veteran players can be this bad at free throws.

Huge Wednesday for both State and Ole Miss, now both sitting at 2-3. Arkansas comes to Oxford for a game that is probably a must win for both, while State travels to Gainesville for a Q1 opportunity, wouldn’t say it’s must win for State but it’s winnable.

Sheesh, State took a tumble in the NET even with the win. Down to 40 now. Combination of Vandy being so bad that just playing them hurts you, and also several of State’s non con opponents lost, including Southern who is starting to have the course correction I feared they would. They’re down in the 200’s now.

If State goes 2-2 in the next four (@Florida, Auburn, @Ole Miss, @Bama), you take it all day long.

Ole Miss fell all the way to 70 after an 0-2 week. Safe to say, gotta beat Arkansas at home, who is only ranked 118th.

Yeah I thought State got it rough last year but their SEC schedule ended up being way tougher this year. Some of that is bad teams last year are now competitive. But whoever the heck decided that State should play Kentucky, Auburn, and Bama twice EACH is not a friend of the Dogs.

That creates opportunities though and out of those six games we need to win at least two of them. Preferably three. If we are going to become a very good team we have to win some of these games.
Simple as that.
Wednesday @ Florida is a huge opportunity for payback from last year when they beat us in the Hump. And it is another game that we need to win if we want to make a deep run in March.

We will see what happens.

If you are the bracketology type, Lunardi has State as his No. 33 overall team entering the week, so the highest ranked 9 seed. He has Ole Miss as one of the first four out. Safe to say there are huge games ahead for both. Both really need at least one win out of two games this week, and then one week from today State travels to Oxford for an obviously massive game on both sides.
