State is playing a doubleheader in Tupelo today. Women play Belmont then men play Will Wade’s McNeese squad. McNeese was a 30 win tourney team last year, perhaps not as good this year but not a bad test at all. State could lose if they leave the defense at home again.

Ole Miss up 38-28 at the half. Started out with a big lead and since, Beard has tried out a bunch of different lineups to get guys minutes who usually doesn’t get many. I expected that with USM being down two of their best players. USM is fighting though and doing a good job of not letting the game get too out of hand. Ole Miss has been helped out from Pedulla having the hot hand from the outside hitting 5 of 7 from 3.

State survived by 3. Toughened up on defense and made free throws down the stretch. Say what you want about Will Wade (and Buddy a lot can be said), but there’s no denying he’s a good coach. They really gave State fits, just maybe ran out of gas last 5 minutes.

Ole Miss and State win again tonight. It looks like a clean sweep for SEC teams playing tonight.

Unless something changes, the SEC likely has the most teams in the NCAAT this year. VERY STRONG start for the conference teams.

Not just the most teams this year…. They might break the record for most teams from one league in a single year. I believe the current record is 11 from the Big East in 2011….. Lunardi currently has 13 SEC teams projected to be in.

Big big game tomorrow as State plays at Memphis. I’m guessing Memphis will be a slight favorite, but should be a very entertaining game and if State is able to win that would be massive for them.

Still perplexed as to why State and Memphis have played so infrequently over the years. This will only be the third meeting in 40 years. Last two were the 2021 NIT finals and the 2008 NCAA tournament.

Kugel had his best game of the season today. He’s probably the only potential NBA prospect on the team, so if State can get more consistency out of him they’ll really be cooking with grease.

Also, the most underrated player in American might be Cam Matthews.

Good win for State. That said, I’m glad we didn’t talk Anfernee Hardaway into coming to Oxford when some wanted us to. We had to suffer through the Kermit years but nonetheless. Dude has a low ceiling.

Yeah there was a big coaching mismatch in State’s favor yesterday. Jans made Penny look pretty bad.

State is up to 11 in the NET now. You’re talking a 3 or 4 seed resume if they are able to stay at that level. Won’t be easy to do but they’ve already built a very strong resume with 12+ more chances for quality wins. Need to dodge one more bad loss possibility against Bethune Cookman on the 30th.

Ole Miss is 30 in the NET but a chance for the same win State just got when they play in the Forum next week. Based on what I saw yesterday I do not at all hate OM’s chances to win that game.

Looks like this season in Mississippi will be less about if the teams get in and more about how good of a seed you can get. Fun place to be in.
