pancho
NIL has exposed Calipari. Same thing as it did to Saban except NIck realized it and made other arrangements. Cal is just packing on the ca$h for retirement at the expense of walmart and tyson foods.
Dawg83
At some point you just don’t have it anymore. Cal is in his mid 60’s now and hasn’t had a Final Four team in a decade. Heck he was losing to Saint Peter’s and Oakland in the NCAAT in recent years. With Kentucky talent. There’s no denying that he was elite at UMass, Memphis, and the first portion of his Kentucky run…. But he hasn’t been that guy in years.
Dawg83
Potentially significant injury in SEC hoops today. Auburn escaped SC by 3 but Johni Broome who was probably the front runner for SEC POTY suffered a pretty serious looking ankle injury. Auburn plays State in 3 days and I don’t expect to see him in that game. Ole Miss plays Auburn twice in February.
Dawg83
Ole Miss beats LSU to move to 3-0. We will learn a ton about them shortly with Bama-State-A&M in the next three games.
sportsmaniac10
Ole Miss is 3-0. But the play has been very uninspiring in my opinion. They are very solid on defense but against a team with solid bigs then offensive rebounds become a big issue. the offense is spotty against teams with a pulse. They go through long spells on the offensive end where when 3s aren’t falling the offense goes stale and falls apart. The lack of true post players is going to make it very difficult to compete with the top 5 in the SEC. From what I’ve seen they’ll be 3-3 heading to Mizzou. Zero signs that they have the ability to beat Bama, State, or TAMU.
Dawg83
This feels like every State vs Kentucky or State vs Bama game I’ve seen the last couple of years. These highly efficient offenses that can drain threes are just really tough for State to handle.
Dawg83
Kentucky beats State again. Some will say UK just got hot but this is the third game in a row where they’ve scored 90+ against Jans. And not many teams score 90+ on Jans. They (and Bama) just have his number. Bulldogs4
Well just a tough loss. Had our opportunities down the stretch and just did not convert. Hubbard is in a bit of a slump. He had some good looks. The FT that Melendez missed at 3:50 mark hurt as well. And some times you just have to give the other team credit.
Bulldogs4
Plus KY losing Tuesday did not do us any favors. You knew they were going to come out and play well tonight. And they did.
sportsmaniac10
Tough night. You knew you were gonna get a tough Kentucky team after less than stellar showing at Georgia. I’ve seen Kentucky play a few times this year and that was best they’ve looked offensively and arguably the best they’ve looked all season. They just werent missing from 3. I think still a good sign for State. By far the best team they’ve played this year and they showed they can compete and importantly score with one of the best teams in the country. Going to be tough but State has the pieces for a top tier finish in SEC play and solid sweet 16 pick. I expect the top 7 to be Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Kentucky, State, Tennessee, and TAMU. No idea on what the order would be but those teams look like they’re a level above the rest of the conference. 8th -10th place looks like Ole Miss, Oklahoma, and Georgia. Georgia has surprised me. They did not look great against Ole Miss but now back to back upsets against Kentucky and Oklahoma. Then the level drops and the bottom 6 will be Arkansas, LSU, Missouri, South Carolina, Texas, and Vandy.
MSTSatchmo
State is still a legit good defensive team. Just looking at some stats, Almonar for KY averages just under 5 points per game, and he hit 3 straight three pointers when State made the comeback in the second half. Robinson for KY averages 29% from three. He hit 7-10. It’s tough to win when several guys step up and have big games, AND you go 12-40 from three. Teams are getting physical with Hubbard and he’s having a tough time getting shots off.
Dawg83
I still really like this State team. If they can shake this off, I do not hate their chances against a Broome-less Auburn on Tuesday. Kentucky is legit, they’ve lost some games but this is a team that already beat Duke, Gonzaga, and Florida this year. And now State. In the league this year you kinda gotta be ok with 1-1 every week and State technically did that this week. Do it again next week and you’re still fine. My suspicion is they lose at Auburn and beat OM at home. Could be wrong on both but we’ll see.
Dawg83
Underrated part of last night was Kugel dealing with injuries. He was playing well when on the court but only played 8 minutes. Hopefully he does not have anything significant going on. Hurt his hand early then left the game limping in the second half and didn’t come back in. A week ago Florida, who is maybe a Top 5 team nationally, lost to this UK team 106-100. I think the key is somehow finding a way to slow teams like that down and not let them dictate the tempo. State has a tendency to get lured into shootouts against these high scoring teams. While they are more equipped for that than either of Jans’ first two years, it’s still not their strongest style. When you’ve got Murphy, Nwoko, and Matthews combining for 6 three point attempts… you’ve simply gotten away from what you do well.
Bulldogs4
I agree that we got caught up a bit in playing KY’s game. When a team of KY’s (they were ranked #6 after all) ability shoots 16-32 from three point land, they are going to win 99 out of every 100 games. And yes our defense was not as good as usual last night. But even when you play strong defense, the other team is going get some open three point looks. KY did and to their credit they buried 50% of their attempts last night.
Bulldogs4
On a good note, the State women recovered from their disastrous start of conference play with their second straight win today beating GA on the road. Now where that leads them nobody knows. Purcell is definitely a good recruiter but his overall coaching is still a work in progress.
Bulldogs4
Auburn is a 7.5 point favorite. Hard to know how this game will go. You have to like Auburn at home as they are very good. However, this State team has shown it can play with anyone anywhere. It should be a heck of a good game. Expecting an Auburn win but I do think we have a boxer’s chance. We will see. Dawg83
Ole Miss with a big game at Bama tonight too. Would be a little surprised if OM won, Bama is a double digit favorite. But you never know. Pretty much house money kind of games for both State and OM tonight. Not a big deal if you lose but would be a massive deal if you won. A LOT of basketball left to play, but this is definitely a signature win for Ole Miss IF they're a bubble team... hopefully a signature win to help with a better seed. We'll see. NoWammies
Down here in Bayou La Batre Alabama for captain school and what a time to be sitting in a bar with an Ole Miss hoodie on. I’m an Ole Miss fan though so I know not to get too excited or have lifted expectations.
