College Basketball Season

I realize we aren’t that far into football season but tip off for hoops season is five weeks from tonight. Curious to get a vibe check on what people think going into this year.

State trying to make the NCAAT for the third year in a row, and also looking for its first NCAAT win since 2008. Hubbard and Matthews are back, and joined by numerous transfers expected to contribute in a major way, most of them transferring from P5 schools. Biggest questions for me are in the post, not sure who is going to lock down that center spot. But the backcourt has more offensive ability than it’s had at any point since Jans got here.

High hopes for Ole Miss too this season in Year 2 of Beard. Another team that brings a lot back and supplemented well in the portal.

Seems like both teams can realistically have tourney expectations this year. Should be one of the more anticipated hoops seasons that we’ve had in a few years.

I'm not sure both can be tourney teams.  The SEC is a meat grinder

Yeah the league as a whole is going to be super strong this year, or at least it should be. The thing about Jans is you feel like he’s done a very good job at State and he has…. And both years State only went 8-10 in the SEC. Speaks to how strong it’s been and will continue to be.

Didn’t comment on this earlier in the week but Ole Miss is preseason number 24 in the AP poll. State not ranked and not particularly close to ranked either, which I find surprising, However there are NINE teams from the SEC ranked in the preseason Top 25. So OM is a Top 25 team and also technically a bottom half of the league team to start the year.

SEC media poll picked OM to finish 9th and State 10th. Wild to see Kentucky barely ahead of OM at 8th. Most believe that Bama and Auburn will be the class of the SEC this year.

Tip is 2.5 weeks away now. OM hosts Long Island on opening night, State hosts West Georgia in what will be their first game as a member of Division I. Suffices to say the expectation should be both State and OM start 1-0.

Ole Miss has a charity exhibition against Illinois at home on the 27th if anyone is looking to watch some early basketball action.

OAN:Has anyone seen the glass floor court UK is using for Big Blue Madness? Amazing the things we have in this day and age.

One week from today we tip off for real.

Anyone going to the Southaven games in a few weeks? State plays Utah and Ole Miss plays Colorado State. Should be the first true test for both, as both have a pretty light first three games to start the year.

ETA: I was under the impression this was a doubleheader all on the same day, but looks like the OM game is Saturday and State is Sunday. Honestly a doubleheader would’ve been awesome. I know State is doing that in Tupelo in December with a men’s game and a women’s game on the same day.

Happy opening night!

State -25.5 vs West Georgia

Ole Miss -28.5 vs Long Island

Shouldn’t be much drama in either game but a first chance to see a lot of new faces. Both State and OM had some of the more highly regarded portal classes in the SEC.

Specifically curious tonight to see Kanye Clary and how State’s backcourt functions with two sub 6 foot guards. He averaged 17 ppg at Penn State last year.

Crazy how Vegas can do things. Final line for the Ole Miss/LIU game was Ole Miss -29.5 with 149.5 O/U. Game ends -30 and 150. Pretty sure some degenerate gamblers were sweating the last couple secs somewhere.

As for the game, not really much you can go off of. Will give LIU a lot of credit. They were a scrappy bunch with a guard Malachi Davis that could play for some big time programs. Ole Miss came out flat early on and struggled from the floor but liked the defensive intensity. Going to have to do a better job though crashing the boards once the competition gets tougher.

State looked about like I expected. Hubbard is a star. Claudell Harris looks like a really nice pickup. Some of the other newcomers were up and down but it’s Game 1 so you cut them some slack, I’m not particularly worried about guys like Kugel or Melendez who have been contributors on other SEC teams, I expect they’ll get going.

I do have some concerns about State’s overall size, though. And they did not have good night rebounding. That 5 position is just a major source of uncertainty right now. And Matthews has got to stay out of foul trouble, State really looked out of sorts for a while in the first half when he had to come out of the game.

Was good to see Murray have a nice game scoring 24 on 70% shooting. Big problem Ole Miss had last year was Murray, Murrell and Brakefield never seemed to have good games together. Always seemed like when one did the other two would be off. Was sort of the issue last night. Brakefield and Murrell both scored double digits but shooting percentage was low. This year we’ve added Dia who could be another high scorer in the bunch. However he got in early foul trouble and only played 11 mins. Can’t afford him to be in foul trouble because he’s also a key contributor on the boards. I’m hoping he can be a consistent 15/8 average type of guy.

Another ranked upset last night was #19 Texas going down to Ohio St 80-72. Not a good start of basketball in the state of Texas. The one ranked matchup we had last night was #6 Gonzaga thumping #8 Baylor 101-63. If that’s any indication on the rest of the season then Gonzaga is a team to fear.

I know it’s crazy to say but Ole Miss could possibly have their hands full tmw night against Grambling. Yes Grambling. It’s a Grambling team who brings back 2 of their best players from last year’s 21-15 tournament team that got put out by runner up Purdue. Also bring back a few contributors from last year’s team as well. They’ve also got 2 guys between 6’9 and 6’11 that could cause problems on the boards for Ole Miss. This should be a good test for guys like Dia, Brown-Jones and Bol. I fully expect a double digit win but it’s the type of game that’ll show where we’re at in places we struggled at in game one.
