Crazy what happened when SEC time came around and Beard decided to give Malik Dia more than around 15 mins a game. Last 3 games he’s seen around 27-30 mins and averaging 21 points/11 rebounds. Safe to say you need that guy on the floor as much as possible.

OM is four games into a very tough SEC and they already have 2 road wins.  That’s huge.

Road wins are so huge. I predicted 4 early on and none of them are the 2 we have right now so I’m happy RIGHT NOW. That could change quick with an off night against a team you’re favored against. Also gotta protect home court in games you’re suppose to win because every game is crucial this year in the SEC.

Humongous win for Ole Miss. Certainly changes how I view that team. I thought they were a solid tourney team but they looked Top 4 seed good tonight.

Burn the tape kind of game for State. Just no chance of winning when you shoot that poorly.

And now, Saturday at the Hump looms quite large. Definitely think State needs it more than OM.

Saturday will be interesting because I kinda think State has a little pressure on them whereas Ole Miss is absolutely playing with house money again. State will likely be favored but probably by single digits. Could really use Kugel back for that one. If he was close enough to playing to be a game time decision last night, surely he’s not far from being back.

At the same time, don’t want to put too much on one game in mid January. Especially when these teams play again in a few weeks and also have a baker’s dozen other SEC games left. But it is a big game and could impact a lot of the conversations about ceiling for each team the next couple of months.

If we can just get the split with State, I'll be completely satisfied. Don't care if that one win is Saturday or if when we get them at home.

I have found that it’s really difficult for either side to sweep in this series, unless there’s a huge talent advantage on one side, but sometimes not even then. Will never forget being there when Rick Ray broke a two month long losing streak by beating maybe the best Ole Miss team of the last 20+ years. That was a bizarre day.

The only sweep I can think of where both sides were at least decent was 2010 and 2011 for State, both teams were basically NIT caliber.

General rule of thumb, and what I generally assume will happen until it doesn’t…. If both sides are relatively even…. State wins in Starkville, OM wins in Oxford. Sometimes it flip flops and the road teams win both. But if you’re a betting man, the most likely outcome is probably a split with the home teams winning both.

Two game skid, have given up a ton of threes (while playing with a lot of effort), a team coming in that can shoot and already have one home loss.  It sure feels like a must win for State.

At the very least for State, Hubbard has to shoot better.

I think they’ve gotta figure out a way for him to play off the ball more. His efficiency has gone down quite a bit since Clary went out and Josh is having to be the primary ball handier more often. He’s shooting 22% from 3 since the Vandy game.

That makes me think he’s due a big game fairly soon, because he’s too talented to keep struggling like this. But yeah, I think there are some ways they can help him out. He has better talent around him this year than he had last year.

Also forgot to mention it but thank freaking gosh State doesn’t have to play Auburn again in the regular season. Holy smokes they are good. To look like that without Broome is special. They are currently the highest rated team in the history of KenPom:

I’m not saying they run the table in this SEC, but yall can go ahead and pencil them in for a 1 seed in the NCAAT. And good chance it’s No. 1 overall.

I'm told the issue early on was he didn't want to play mainly down low but wanted to be more of a swing guard and the coaches had a sit down with him.

That win against Georgia that had Ole Miss fans upset because we didn’t look sharp in the 1H is looking better every game. Since then Georgia has beaten ranked Kentucky, ranked Oklahoma and leads Tennessee at the half on the road.

Oklahoma was a team whose hype I didn’t buy and that’s proving correct so far. Two weeks ago they were in the Top 12 and undefeated. Now 0-4 in the SEC.

I think the SEC ends up with more like 10 or 11 NCAAT teams rather than the 13 projected early on. But that group of 10 or 11 is really outstanding. The overwhelming majority of those teams are single digit seeds nowhere near the bubble.

Perhaps insignificant but interesting piece of trivia…. Everyone knows these two teams play twice a year. Since 2012 (Stansbury’s last year), Ole Miss has won the first meeting of the season 10 out of the last 13 times. And that does include a couple of wins in Starkville (2019 and 2021).

I realize a lot of that is Ray and Howland who both had losing records against Ole Miss. Jans is 3-1 against them but the one loss was in the first meeting last year (albeit in Oxford).

Also the first time these two teams have met as both being ranked teams. Part of me was kind of surprised by that.

I fully expect State to win at home tomorrow but if Ole Miss somehow pulls it out I def have to reevaluate my thoughts on the team. I still see them as a 7/8 seed type of team. A lot of it boils down from still having a sour taste in my mouth from the Memphis showing or lack there of. Need Dia and Brakefield to have another game like they did against Bama and need Pedulla, Murray and Murrell to all put up double figures. Def don’t need any cold shooting from the 3 from those 3. Defensively they just need to keep playing like they have lately in SEC play. Forcing 20+ turnovers against Bama was the key to that win also in the 2H turnaround against Georgia.

What a game. Sucks we came out on the short end of the stick but I’ll accept this one with how we battled back from a slow start. Beard realized the lineup that’ll work in the 2H and it almost worked out. Just need to erase this one and get a road win against a surprisingly tough Missouri team next.
