Bulldogs4
Coach Jans is correct when he said we are not a top ten team. But we are not far off from that. We are really good team but to be a top ten team you have to beat a top ten team. The opportunity is in front of us. We will see what happens Tuesday. Go Dawgs!!! Post on social media for the crowd to come and support and then the team comes out and lays an egg. Then she usually follows up with some post like “stick with us. We will learn from this”. Safe to say that in year 7 we have yet to learn from this. Lady Rebs dug themselves into a hole early trailing 24-9 after the first quarter but fought back and took a 2 point lead going into the 4th. Early in the 4th, Lady Rebs built a 7 point lead with about 8 minutes to go and that is when the wheels came off and they imploded. Got out scored 24-7 to close the last 8 minutes and lost by 10. Now losing to Oklahoma isn’t a bad loss. All of Ole Miss’s losses this year are to top 20 teams (except the Texas A and M loss) This Oklahoma team is solid and will likely have a shot at the elite 8 this year. But again it’s the manner in which Ole Miss lost and continues to lose games (now 10-42 vs top 25 in the Coach Yo era). Offense continues to struggle and show no positive signs of improvement against any team that is remotely competent. 7 seasons and we still have no one that’s a threat from behind the arc and struggle protecting the ball against the better teams. The only reason this teams stats don’t look abysmal is due to the fact that she scheduled 6 SWAC teams and a few other mediocre non conference games. Tonight’s showing: 56 points 34% from the floor 0-12 from 3 11-20 from the free throw line 22 turnovers *Also Oklahoma’s star all American post player didn’t play tonight due to illness. I don’t really care how good your defense is. When your offense is this weak, you won’t be able to beat an elite team. And the worst part is that coach Yo says this is one of her best offensive teams she’s coached at Ole Miss. I could rant for a while on this but I’ll save everyone the time. I think we’ve seen about all we’re going to get out of Coach Yo. Well, Yo finally got that home win or just win in general I suppose over a Top 10 team. Good for her and the team. They trailed at the half, got a lead and didn’t fold down the stretch.
Dawg83
Big slate of games tonight: Florida at State Auburn at Vandy Tennessee at Kentucky Bama at Texas Georgia at A&M Good night to sit back and watch some hoops.
Dawg83
State led by 1 at the half and is getting run out of the building in the second half. I’ve finally come around to the idea that this team has been overrated for quite a while. Good teams don’t get blown out at home twice in a row. This is a merely OK team that might make the tournament still (though I’m starting to question it a little)…. But if they do get in I don’t believe they’re much of a threat to do much. I don’t think it’s a well built team to play the style Jans wants to play…. And they don’t shoot it nearly well enough to be a threat offensively. If you can’t play defense you have to score. The last few years state cooks by shoot, but they were in every game because they played physical and athletic. Now they aren’t doing either. Last night was an elite defensive performance by Ole Miss and a rebounding clinic. 27-28 offensive rebounds and +24 rebounding margin. Hope they celebrated and now are back to business because theres still plenty of work to do and this win doesn’t get her off the hook yet. Season picture that win puts them at 7-4 in SEC play with LSU, South Carolina, and Tennessee still to play in the last 5 games. Your worst case scenario should be they lose those 3 but win against Mizzou and Arkansas (the 2 weakest SEC teams this year) and finish 9-7. Probably get a single bye and end up 5th or 6th seed in the SEC tournament. i think maybe they have an outside chance at stealing a win from Tennessee “if”, and that’s a big if, they show up to play. Tennessee has been up and down this year, win over UCONN last week, but also loss to a Vandy team that Ole Miss beat 2x by double digits. So who knows but I think safe to chalk up at least 2 Ls for LSU and South Carolina. But win those other 2 and beat Tennessee that’s 10-6 and a slim chance depending on how other games shake out at grabbing the 4 seed and double bye. And believe it or not, they’re currently predicted to be a 5 seed in the NCAA tourney. Womens predicted seeding is pretty off from the national polls which isn’t unheard of but to the degree the seeds vary from the rankings this year is unusual. For example UK was ranked 8th in the polls but seeded a 4 in one prediction and a 5 seed in another. But based on the current predictions, it seems like Ole Miss could very easily play their way into hosting the opening rounds. NET ranking is 13 but what’s working against them is the very weak non conference schedule and 5-7 record in quad 1-2 games .
Bulldogs4
Disappointing to say the least. And yes at this point in the season, we are just an okay team. Just kind of leaves you dumbfounded when you play straight up with a team for a half and then just fall apart in the second half. I don’t get it. Dawg83
State thought they were bringing in shooters from the portal and none of these guys can shoot. And they’re also worse defensively than what State had a year ago.

rebmus
I feel somewhat bad for South Carolina. 0-11 in SEC play now but have played so many ranked teams close at home... only to lose every one of them. It's a relief USCe didn't pull off the first SEC win against Ole Miss tonight.

Dawg83
And now we go into Eggsketbsll round 2 on Saturday. This time in Oxford. You never know for sure in these games, and the way State dominated the post in the first game does make me wonder a little bit if they have more of a chance than it feels like…. But the recent trend of both teams feels like Ole Miss is winning this game by double digits. It is difficult to have much faith in this State team when they’ve been one of the worst perimeter teams in the country (both offense and defense). MSTSatchmo
OM has about 5 guys that can get hot from three. At least 4 that are pretty consistent if they have open looks. I don’t see OM winning by less than double digits at home. Possibly another game State gets down by 20-30 at some point.

Dawg83
OM vibes are high, State vibes are low, that’s for dang sure. One team is already an NCAAT lock and just playing for seeding, the other is flirting with falling back to the bubble.
Dawg83
Ole Miss a 4.5 point favorite as of this morning. State has failed to cover the spread in 8 of the last 9 if I’m not mistaken.

Dawg83
I’ll be danged. That was the best game State has played in about two months. Really good win. The supporting cast finally showed up for State.
Bulldogs4
Hard to figure. State is 2-4 at home and 4-2 on the road in the league. SEC is so tough. I think Ole Miss was probably due for an off game and State was due for a good game and they just clashed tonight. The other stat that is interesting is State is 18-2 against teams outside the top ten. We are not a top ten team obviously but we are at least top 25. If you are Ole Miss this one stings a bit because you were at home against your rival. But Ole Miss does not need to let State beat them twice. Next game is big. State let Kentucky & Bama beat us twice in the recent weeks. And that really stinks when that happens.
MSTSatchmo
Did I mention I’m not a gambler. Looking at the stats, State still shot bad from 3, but OM didn’t go off like most teams have. OM has some big wins, so this won’t hurt them much. State was in a must win situation. The Bama/Auburn atmosphere was pretty good. I was expecting more going on around the arena, but it was like 10 till 3 and all of a sudden the stadium was full. It got pretty loud when Bama tied it late, but I don’t think they ever took the lead.

The committee released its Top 16 as of today and five of State’s losses are to teams in that group, including four losses to the TOP FIVE. State is not a national title contender…. But they are very capable of beating other “good but not elite” teams. And there are several very winnable games left on the schedule. Feel like this team can get to 9 or 10 SEC wins which I was not at all optimistic about until tonight.
Dawg83
One last opportunity tonight for State against a Top 10 team at home. State is a slight favorite in this one and I do think they match up better with A&M than they did some of the other upper tier SEC teams. But A&M has won a ton of close games including several away from home. I expect this is close and low scoring. I think a win here pretty much locks up State into the NCAAT barring a crazy series of events down the stretch. A loss doesn’t kill State but makes Saturday in Norman a much bigger game.
