Bulldogs4
Dang State tried to give it away with poor FT shooting and a very stupid intentional foul at the end. But we made some big plays none bigger than the blocked layup and the three pointer. That was the turning point. But gosh if you are an Ole Miss, fan you have to be pleased your team. Great comeback and you guys played a tremendous game. State‘s dominance on the boards was tempered by the turnovers and poor FT shooting. Both teams are capable of making a deep run in March if they stay healthy and get a bit of luck. Basketball is fun!!!
Dawg83
Just back in from the game. Heck of an atmosphere. Two very good teams. I thought State mismanaged the heck out of the end of regulation and the intentional foul in overtime was awful (you shouldn’t be fouling period there). But make no mistake, that’s a good win for State. Especially with Hubbard still not out of his funk. I was correct that the return of Kugel was significant. Murphy also played really well today. However, I continue to believe this team’s Achilles heel is they are not good at defending the 3. Have given up 39 made 3’s the last 3 games and well over 40%. That’s problematic. But good to win in spite of that for once: State needed that one more than OM, but if I’m an OM fan I’d still be thrilled with where you are right now. I have seen OM teams in the past fall behind inside a packed Hump and just crumble. Nope, this team made really good adjustments and dang near won the game. I think the second game in Oxford should be every bit as intense. Get ready for two absolute rock fights in the midweek. State is at Tennessee and Ole Miss hosts A&M. If you like physicality then buckle up you’re gonna get it.
MSTSatchmo
Tennessee fell to Vandy on the road by a point, but they’re a different team at home. They’ve won both SEC home games by around 20. That’s going to be a tough one for State. I don’t think A&M is as good as they’re ranking, so I expect OM to get back on track at home. After getting manhandled by OM at home, Bama puts up 100+ at Kentucky. Auburn has another close road win at Georgia.
Dawg83
Ole Miss actually rose in the NET by 3 spots to 13 after the loss (combined with other results like Bama winning). State is back up to 16 now. Both of these teams are likely 4 seeds in the NCAAT if it was decided today. OM perhaps in the 3 seed discussion, Both teams are in a spot where really if you just go 1-1 every week you’re going to be in really great shape for a good seed. Insideradvantage
We were so tantalizing close yesterday I definitely started to think a win could have been had, but I said all long I could feel ok about a loss if we played well enough. Other than that abysmal start, we did.
pancho
both teams will need luck in the injury department as as little as 1 guy out of the rotation will be catastrophic. Still is incredible to have both teams as highly ranked at the same time.

State got a huge boost with Kugal being back. 21 for him and some clutch shots and FTs
Bulldogs4
If State can get Clary back that would be huge. He is a PG that can take some of the pressure off Hubs. Plus with him that gives us a nine player rotation. That is huge when you get down the stretch and you can keep your players fresh. So injuries can derail a season in a hurry. OTOH, staying injury free, can be a huge advantage. That will be a big key for both teams.

Dawg83
Going back to the men’s side of things for a second, the horse has been beaten to death already on how strong the SEC is this year, but putting it in a NET perspective just gets crazier and crazier. Look at State’s schedule for example…. They have played 4 Q1 games in a row, and now 9 of their next 10 are also Q1 games. And the only one that isn’t is a safely Q2 road game at South Carolina. Every single game State plays in the month of February is currently a Q1 game… and they haven’t even finished their January murderer’s row yet. Just an insane year for the league. Bulldogs4
Purcell seems to have recruited well but his floor coaching seems poor at worst and below average at best. Team does not appear to have much discipline when comes to protecting the ball. Losing to your rival at home is bad enough but when you finish a game going from tied at the five minute mark to losing by eight and not scoring but one basket in that time frame is beyond bad. And 83 as you noted, the SEC Men’s side is a bear this year and there are going to be lots of rock fights in the next month and a half. pancho
state has a tuff one tonight in knoxville. A&M won't be a pushover wednesday nite in oxford but the rebs should hold serve.
Dawg83
Yeah State has two road games this week (UT and SC) and I think a 1-1 week is perfectly acceptable. I feel like State matches up better with UT than other top SEC teams, but Knoxville has not been kind to State over the years. I’ve had this one penciled in as a loss for a while but we’ll see if something interesting happens. State did beat UT twice last year, though neither game was in Knoxville. Bulldogs4
For Ole Miss this was a good week to have an extra day off. A&M is decent but Ole Miss should win as long as they don’t lay an egg. TN coming off a loss is going to be very tough. But a measure of a good team is playing a difficult game on road and giving yourself a chance to win. We will see what happens. Dawg83
State loses by 12. Played a really bad first half and never totally got back into it, though they did play better in the second half. You’ve lost 3 of 4 now but all 3 losses were to Top 10 teams, and 2 of them were road games, so you’ve gotta weigh that when you evaluate State right now. The schedule the rest of the way is by no means easy but this stretch in January is the worst part of it. Need to beat SC again on Saturday and you’re still in a good spot. Bulldogs4
Crucial game for State @ South Carolina Saturday. Really a must win if we are considered to be a top 15-20 type team. Certainly SC will play much better at home than they did the first game. Need to have a strong start Saturday. Hubbard did make four threes if you can say there was any kind of silver lining from last night.
NoWammies
More than likely no Brakefield tonight. His 10 pts/5 reb plus clutch FT shooting will be missed if so.
Dawg83
Fascinated by this game in Oxford tonight. A&M lost a couple of games without Wade Taylor but he’s back now. Love the depth on this A&M squad and they play great defense. Can be hit or miss offensively though. Great coaching matchup in this one too with Buzz vs Beard. On a neutral court I think A&M is perhaps better but OM will definitely have a chance to win, especially at home. I will be shocked if this isn’t a low scoring game. Key for me will be if OM can get Dia going again.
Insideradvantage
What a horrific, abysmal, putrid, dismal, downtrodden, ugly, pitiful and disjointed way to give away a basketball game the visiting team never led until the last shot.
Dawg83
I am totally baffled at how OM managed to lose that game. A&M is very good but my word OM did absolutely everything wrong at the end of that. Up 8 at home with 2 minutes left and lose in regulation? Rough.
Bulldogs4
Yep. That one hurts. A home game that you really needed to win. But in basketball one game does not make a season. Ole Miss will definitely have to pick up the pieces quickly and forget about this game. A&M is a good team but to let that lead get squandered late like that really stings. Same thing happened in the SC and UF game. Florida never lead until the last basket.
