I kind of agree with you but then I hear the “experts “ keep saying “both State and Ole Miss are tournament locks” right before they say “this is a must-win situation for Ole Miss” or “this is a must-win situation for Miss State.”  Both simply cannot be true.

It’s must win for seeding purposes, not for making the tournament purposes. Right now both are projected 7 seeds and the goal has to be to stay clear of the 8/9 seed line and avoid a pairing with a 1 seed in the first weekend.

I think either one losing today bumps them down to an 8 or 9 seed which is not at all where you want to be.

I'm not so sure Ole Miss was a "lock" had they lost 6 in a row to finish the season. At best, they'd have been a 9 seed and likely lower. Some auto bid stealing could have put them on the outside looking in.

That win today definitely puts Ole Miss "IN". I'm guessing OM is projected about a 6-7 seed now, leaning 6. The next two games could really help the seeding (I think a 5 with a shot of 4 IF winning both). Losing both (which is very likely), OM will be lucky to get a 7 and most likely and 8. A lot will depend on how close the games are IF they're both losses... get blown out twice and it will be an 8/maybe 8 seed.

Kudos to OM and MSU both for taking care of business against "lesser" teams today.

I really like MSU's chances in the next two games to improve seeding vs Ole Miss's chances since MSU"s games are much more winnable.

As Al Davis used to say “Just win baby”

Does not have to be pretty. And Oklahoma is a better team than their 4-12 conference record indicates.

I am just glad we were only down 2 at the half as State played horrible in the first half. Second half was much better. After starting 0-7 from three we hit 7 of our final 14.

And regarding the Tournament, I just don’t see a SEC team getting into the big dance with less than a 8-10 conference record. Unless said team wins at least 2 or maybe 3 conference tournament games. Yes, you get credit for the tough schedule but at some point you have to win games. Just losing to a bunch of really good teams does not cut it. JMHO though.

There are 10 teams with 8 SEC wins now and I think they're all safely in. Including Vanderbilt who has had 3 huge wins in a row and I think they’ve secured their place.

Arkansas, Georgia, Texas, Oklahoma, it’s now or never for them. Better get to winning immediately or else have fun in the NIT. UGA is the one of those trending the best right now. Texas has really hurt themselves in the last week. Oklahoma, I just don’t see a path without a crazy SEC tourney run. Arkansas feels like the most 50/50 of that group.

State will have a lot to say about how the bubble shakes out, as they close against Texas and Arkansas in the last 2.

Really tough week for Ole Miss as they get to play two teams jockeying for 1 seeds. I think you’d take 1-1 in a heartbeat and be thrilled about it.

State is going to make the tourney still but I don’t know how you can have any confidence about this team actually winning a game there. They are destined for a 7/10 or 8/9 game that I’m not sure they can even win and then it seems pretty clear they can’t hang with a 1 or 2 seed if they even make it to one of them in the second round.

To quote the late Dennis Green, “they are who we thought they were”. It’s the same story with State that it’s been all of SEC play… This is one of the worst perimeter offense and perimeter defense teams in the country.

If you can’t make open shots and you let State’s press cause issues for you, they can beat you. Texas almost choked in a major way in this one because they couldn’t stop turning it over late, but they made enough shots and free throws to hang on.

If you can break the press and hit some open threes…. Buddy you can run State out of the gym. Just ask all the top SEC teams, pretty much all of them did it.

Both State basketball squads seem to have the same mentality. Mediocre against the weak teams. Women looked awful in the first half but have a twenty point lead in the fourth quarter against a bad Mizzou team.

Sets up a match up with Ole Miss tomorrow.

Gotta give OM the edge. State turns the ball over way too much and we are way too inconsistent.
