Former Coach
On 3/29/2025 at 7:42 AM, Bulldogs4 said: Nwoko entered TP. Even though he was a starter, he did not really develop like was anticipated. Plus he did not have much endurance. Played 15 minutes a game. Clary was basically out the entire season. Matthews will be a big plug to replace. And as much as I respect him and appreciate his great effort, today’s game requires guys who can score from the outside. He did a lot things but his FT shooting was poor and he was not much of an offensive threat. Harris & Melendez were decent players but neither was much of an offensive threat outside a few games here and there. So that is five players gone. Signing class was strong, but a good PG, SG and a couple of F/C from the TP are a must. There is a decent nucleus coming back with Hubs, Murphy, Jones, Kugel. Just gotta find the right pieces. We will see. Ole Miss will be rebuilding next year. Beard is a good coach but most likely Ole Miss will take a step back. Hard to replace the chemistry and experience that this team had this year. They were a special group that played really well together. Must find a guy that can dominate on both ends of the floor, another shooter and the fill in the pieces, but I think a dominate big guy is a must. A guy that's gonna be a double double or close guy and defends the rim.
Dawg83
This is on par with 2008 for the best Final Four ever, IMO. Only second time ever that all 1 seeds made it. And any of the four would be the favorite to win it all in almost any other year.
Dawg83
Shawn Jones announced he was returning to State today. I know his offensive skill is fairly limited but I think he’s the kind of guy you need on your team. Good length for a guard, strong defender, A+ effort guy. He’s a Jans style player for sure. Nwoko committed to LSU, so we will see how he progresses on a different team in the same league. Edited April 1, 2025 by Dawg83

Dawg83
Surprising coaching change, Buzz Williams leaving A&M for the Maryland job. I am genuinely shocked by that. A&M becomes the most high profile opening now. We will see if either Beard or Jans are involved, I guess. My thinking is no.
Dawg83
Kugel in the portal for State. What a bizarre one year stint in Starkville for that guy. Looked amazing in two very specific games….. and then there was all the other games…..

Dawg83
Beard not taking the A&M job. I’m not sure how many people thought that was actually gonna happen, did not buy it myself.
Bulldogs4
Transfer portal is just a mercenary clearing house. And going forward it will mostly be a crap shoot on who succeeds in a given year. Ole Miss hit the jackpot this year with a combination of veteran returnees and some great portal pieces. State was a mixed bag. On paper it looked good and was somewhat successful but just getting to the Tournament and an underachieving regular season left everyone let down at the end of the season. But the days of one player staying at one school four-five years is over. Continuity is history. Good coaching will require a lot of luck and good fortune. Because you are going to be going into the season basically blind each year. Will this team gel this year? Did I find the right players? Will they have any consistency? Will they be dedicated? How many malcontents will I end up with? And the questions/answers will linger on for a while.
Dawg83
A&M hiring Bucky McMillan from Samford. I am fascinated by this because he is a very good coach but stylistically the total opposite of Buzz Williams.
pancho
guess it depends on how far down on the initial get list he was. one can't sit idle with the portal a popping either.
Dawg83
Pretty wild to go from coaching a high school in Birmingham to coaching an SEC program in the span of five years. With the only stop in between being a small private university in the SoCon.
Bulldogs4
Duke with ultimate choke of the year tonight. Hopefully Florida can bring home the bacon… err Gold Ball Monday night…
Bulldogs4
SC women losing couldn't happen to whinier coach than Staley. Even if it is UCONN applying the beating. She used to her girls playing like thugs and getting away with it. Now that a team that is just plain better than them is whipping that *** she just wants to whine about the officiating. Florida vs Houston will be a very good championship.
Bulldogs4
Houston mimicked what Duke did Saturday night tonight. Just could not hold the lead. Led for 39 minutes and 14 seconds but the last :46 told the tale. In the end, Florida was the best team this year. Period. No pun intended.

Yeah UF went 7-1 against the group of Auburn, Houston, Tennessee, and Bama this year. Hard to say the best team didn’t win it this year. I did not see Golden getting them to that level so quickly. I frankly had kinda assumed Florida was just a Billy Donovan built operation that wouldn’t get back to Billy’s level again. But I was wrong. Dawg83
Keyshawn Murphy in the portal. Will be curious to see if he’s actually gone or if this is a negotiation thing. You may recall that he’s done this before.
Bulldogs4
Fans, if there are any left, would do well to wear blinders in the offseason. And when the first game of the season rolls around, check the roster to see who is playing for your team. No sense in even paying (no pun intended) attention from Tuesday until the first game is played in November. Same goes for all the sports. Dawg83
State got their starting center today, big man from Wichita State. Also have a commitment from a guard from UAB that shot the 3 really well this year. They still need several more pieces.

I'll take the trade of him for the big from Wichita.

The Wichita guy is different of big man, from what I can tell. Better defender and rebounder, less skilled as a scorer. Think State still needs a bigger guy that can score. Maybe Murphy sticks around.

Former Coach
With the new collective bargaining maybe colleges will/can use the NFL model of contracts. Every freshman signs a three year contract that allows for a fourth year option. If you choose to red shirt you lose that years pay. If you choose to sit out you don't et paid. If the school red shirts you then you still get paid. Anyone coming in on the transfer portal has to sign a minimum 2 year contract unless you only have one year or eligibility remaining.
