College Basketball Season

State about to start a stretch of eight Q1 games in a row. Gonna be an intense month before a somewhat softer landing to end the year. We will learn exactly how good this State team is in this stretch, IMO. They’ve kinda had the expected results to this point. Now they enter a stretch with a ton of toss ups and games that could go either way.

Unless the half court offense, or lack there of, improves it is going to be a long disappointing stretch.

I would take 4-4 in the next 8 no questions asked. Don’t need to start the stretch by going 0-2 at home, though. Need to beat either Bama or Mizzou this week.

1-1 would be good this week but we need to beat Bama. I know they are really good but it is a game that we need to find a way to win.

2-0 would really put us in a good position to make a run during the second half of the conference season.
Kind of like KY has had a mental edge over us it has been the same with Bama. Close but no cigar. Would like to get over that HUMP … no pun intended … tomorrow night.

No big surprise but Kanye Clary officially out for the season. Unless he returns next year which I don’t expect, that makes two years in a row of State getting a much hyped transfer point guard and neither guy ever played in an SEC game. Oh well.

He is applying for a red shirt, but that doesn't mean it will actually be at State. Hopefully it will.

I don’t think they are expecting him back. There is an injury but I think it’s possibly a situation where the player would rather preserve his eligibility for next year (likely somewhere else) rather than burn it for a partial season now.

If anyone recalls the order of things last offseason, Clary was the first transfer in the boat for State and was thought to be a focal point. But then they added other guards and it became more of a committee of guards thing and there’s only so many points to go around. Kugel was kind of a late surprise, he was headed to Kansas but it fell through due to academic reasons and State was able to get him after that happened. I’m wondering if the Clary deal plays out differently if Kugel is able to get in to Kansas.

State a very slight home favorite over Bama tonight. I’m a little surprised by that honesty. I think this is a poor matchup for State and I’m kinda in “I’ll believe it when I see it” mode with these Bama and Kentucky games. My expectation is it’s competitive but ultimately Bama lures State into another track meet and State can’t quite keep up.

Big home game for OM against Texas. This feels like a must win game with Auburn and Kentucky up next.

If Ole Miss can’t fix the rebounding issue, they’re doomed and going to have some ugly losses ahead. You’re not gonna beat many teams losing the rebounding battle by 15-20 every night. A lot of it is just ball watching and bad effort (I’m talking to you Mr. Pedulla).

The state loss didn’t hurt. I thought State was phenomenal crashing the boards and was very disciplined in their game plan. Ole Miss got the 1 point lead in OT and lost its composure. Started forcing shots and got out of the game plan and State took advantage.

The Texas A and M game was ugly, but somehow we found ourselves up late. The last 90 seconds was about as disastrous of a performance as I have seen in D1 power conference basketball game. Zero composure. Just like someone let the 3 stooges (well 5 in this case, 6 if you count beard) on court. That loss was tough to swallow even though you had a feeling most of the game that we were gonna find a way to blow it.

The Mizzou game was the back breaker but not even because it was the third straight loss. Technically nothing to be ashamed of losing in the road to a top 25 team. But it was just the way Ole Miss lost. You never really felt like they were in the game and Mizzou figured out the Ole Miss defense and Beard didn’t change a thing. Gave up the corner 3 all night and Mizzou feasted on it. Offense was abysmal. Looked a lot like we did against Memphis.

It’s up to Beard to figure things out and make adjustments now because everyone saw the Alabama game, took notes, and has figured out ways to beat Ole Miss.

Also for the love of god , this team has to try to get in the paint and draw a foul. Besides getting destroyed on the boards, all 3 losses, Ole Miss’s opponents shot double the amount of free throws as the Rebs did. Fingers crossed that the man being paid millions can figure out a way to make this happen.

State is not very good on the perimeter offensively or defensively, but Hubbard always has the potential like last night to shoot you into a game. I thought Murphy had a great game overall, the miss at the end stings but State isn’t in the game without Murphy. He’s had a really nice season overall.

State’s biggest problem is the perimeter, on offense and defense. They aren’t efficient shooting the 3 and they give up a ton of 3’s at a high %. That’s what separates them from the elite teams they can’t quite keep up with.

Saturday vs Mizzou is a huge game. Quick turnaround with that game being at noon on Saturday and Mizzou has had a week to prepare. Dangerous spot against a good team.

Matthews has been non existent on offense since the Kentucky game.  I think he maybe took 2 or 3 shots last night. Offensively they rarely attack the goal with an inside post or dribble drive. It's normally high ball screens, without the roll to the basket, or pass and dribble until they have to throw up a prayer. Hubbard did attack several times lase night. And please, if you are 6'10 and and get to the rim rip the goal off the backboard. On defense we double when the ball goes inside or try and trap the dribbler, both which lead to wide open 3 pointers. People talked about Coleman hasn't shot like that all year. He probably hasn't been left wide open like that all year. It was the same the Kentucky game. I would rather take our chances 1 on 1 and possibly give up 2 points than leave the 3 wide open.

We need to pick our spots on doubling/trapping a player and not do it all the time. We are definitely leaving too many shooters open for three pointers. It definitely bit us against KY and again last night against Bama.
But even with that we still had our chances. Just did not cash in at the end. Tough loss but it is only one game. Gotta find a way to beat Mizzou.

And yes Matthews has disappeared recently. Give Jones/Kugel some more of his minutes. At least until he gets out of this funk he is in.

Well part of me is not surprised. After Wednesday I was afraid we would be flat.
And then we seem to bring out the best in other team’s three point shooting. Plus Missouri has just totally dominated this game in every aspect.

Where do we go from here? Team will need to flush this one in a hurry. Some of our best players have just disappeared recently.
Basketball is a team game but we played poorly as team today. Period.

I don't know the actual stats, but I bet if you checked, the opponent 3pt percent is like the football pass complete percent - the season high.

State is statistically one of the worst teams in the country at defending the 3.
