For whatever reason they have been stuck around 20th in the polls. They are closing in on another 40 win season, their 9th in a row, no one else in the nation has 8. Time for them to move up into regional host conversions. USM is a really good team, the issue is the resume right now is a little weak, in spite of all the wins. Other than the early season series win at TCU, there isn’t much meat on the bone, unfortunately. And they’ve taken about half a dozen Q3 and Q4 losses. If they win 2 or sweep Troy then I think it becomes more interesting, though. Also might not hurt to do well in the conference tourney. I do wonder if they are being hurt by being the number two Sun Belt team this year, in terms conference standings and RPI. The league ended up being pretty bad this year after the Top 3 teams, and the committee may not want to reward the Sun Belt with multiple host sites. And it seems like right now Coastal is higher on the hosting pecking order. Shame that USM and Coastal don’t play in the regular season. Maybe it will happen in the conference tourney. Bulldogs4
If Coastal and USM win two this weekend and then end up playing for the Tournament Championship, they may both earn a host spot in the Regionals. USM has been taking care of business which is all you can do. You can’t help what your opponents do when they are not playing you. State’s game with North Alabama was canceled which is good news IMHO. Really would not have helped us to have played that game. We will definitely need to be at full strength for Missouri. They will be playing with a lot of confidence so we need to stymie it by not giving them freebies through base on balls and/or errors and taking advantage of our own opportunities. Dawg83
Curious to see how State pitches it this weekend. Pico has not looked super sharp recently and they’ve had to throw him on short rest last week due to the Kentucky series not starting until Saturday. I would consider maybe holding him for Game 2 so that he can have normal rest heading into the postseason. It’s risky for an SEC series but I might even consider taking a Johnny Wholestaff approach on Thursday, throw Pico on Friday, and throw Siary on Saturday…. Then you have Ligon for Tuesday in Hoover. As long as you can win two with that pitching approach, I think it's a good idea.
maroontide06
Just don't burn the bullpen up on Thursday and it can work. You'll need the bats to show up though.

You mean like Ole Miss did? Bring in your best relief guy, who's been rock solid, in an 8-2 game and ride him the rest of the way. Who does that? Answer: Bianco.

Ole Miss’ pitching was fine. Their failure to take advantage of scoring opportunities and a costly error are what cost them in game three. Game two was a great pitchers duel. Those happen occasionally.

Dawg83
I actually really like the OM pitching staff. They’ve got enough arms to win a Regional, if everybody is used properly. I don’t think the lineup is great, though. Seems very boom or bust. They are either getting a bunch of extra base hits or striking out. Don’t seem to manufacture runs particularly well. Dawg83
State beat Mizzou 25-7. lol. I mean what do you even say about that one. Big win for Ole Miss over Auburn. If they can win one more then they should go to Hoover with a chance to host depending on how they do there.
Bulldogs4
Ditto on both teams coming up with big wins last night and USM with a big road win over Troy. Hosting chances for USM is still slim but not out of the question yet. All three need to keep up the momentum tonight.
David44
wow, 25-7. Football season started and nobody told me? whatever momentum Missouri had after sweeping A&M is gone now.

What ya talkin bout Willis? we scored three TD’s, three PAT’s and had two safeties… 8 HR’s was a record for a SEC conference game. I am sure a team has done it against a Non-Conference opponent.

I can understand how a bad team can fool around a win a game, maybe even two. I have no explanation for how this Mizzou team possibly could have swept another SEC team. hasbeen67
Still, I wouldn't count those other two yet.

But A&M letting that team sweep them (in college station no less) blows my mind.
Bulldogs4
Absolutely no guarantee that we win today or tomorrow but it almost appears that A&M has thrown in the towel for the season. Missouri winning last weekend was the best thing that could have happened for State. We had to be focused on one game at a time. Need to win tonight first. Dawg83
State up 8-0 again in the second inning…. I am calling it, this Mizzou team is the worst SEC team I have ever seen.
Bulldogs4
Need to end this in 7 innings and get back to the hotel. But we have stubbed our toe the last couple of innings and only lead 9-3 in the sixth inning.
Dawg83
State takes the series, will go for the sweep tomorrow but they should have secured an NCAAT bid now. What a run these last few weeks. I know the schedule hasn’t been the toughest in the world but I don’t know many people that saw this team getting to 14 or 15 SEC wins this time two weeks ago. Bulldogs4
Not me for one. Schedule has been manageable but we have won games. Win tomorrow and we will have gone from 1-9 to 15-15. Seven weeks ago that was unthinkable. Still have to win though.
Bulldogs4
USM wins again at Troy. Dang they are going to make it tough for the NCAA not to give them a host spot if they keep winning. 40-13 overall 23-6 in the conference is impressive even if the Sunbelt is down done some this year. Dawg83
Ole Miss and USM both making the hosting discussion very interesting at the last minute. Feels like what happens tomorrow and in conference tourneys will probably matter a lot for those last couple of spots. State essentially just playing for Hoover seeding tomorrow. They are going to fall somewhere in the 10 to 12 seed range. Will depend on if they win tomorrow and also how Florida and Oklahoma both do. Ideally you’d probably love to be the 10 seed opening with South Carolina if you had your pick, but they need to win and get some help for that to happen. hasbeen67
Wasn't state in the Hattiesburg regional a few years ago? That would sound about right this year.
