There will be a time and a place for that, but now is the time to get someone in there who can start winning and get it turned around. Whenever they do celebrate that 2021 National Championship team having Lemonis come back is a no brainer.
Dawg83
I would be weary of any “scoops” you see from national guys like Kendall Rogers right now, especially as it pertains to big names. College baseball is very much a good ole boy sport and there is a lot of coaches using the media to leverage a pay raise at their current school. For example…. He apparently has Brian O’Connor from Virginia as a possible candidate….. I don’t buy it remotely. Edited April 29, 2025 by Dawg83
coastfootballfanman
I would love to see them go after Ostrander from USM. He has deep ties to the state, he recruits really well at a place like USM, so I would imagine given what State has, he could do great there. He has a history of developing solid pitchers and that is something State has needed help with lately. His staff has done a great job with recruiting and developing as well. I think it would be a great hire and he would be successful in time. He has been super successful everywhere he has been and would be a realistic hire in my opinion. Dawg83
Ostrander would be a good hire…. For whatever reason I don’t see him leaving USM for State.

Baseball in MS is unmatched. Just because we have "better facilities" doesn't always mean we are always going to be the top job. Southern has a good fan base and good teams so that would make it hard get guys like Ostrander. State will have to dive in the pocket book to land a big hire. I agree but I would rather do that on a guy like Ostrander who would be willing to stick around a long time with success over someone else that does not have the ties here that he does.

I agree. As far as baseball goes, I do think State is top notch in the matter of establishing a successful program that coaches would stick with for a long time. Ostrader would be a great match
NoWammies
State is a sleeping giant that with the right hire could rack up national championships. As an Ole Miss fan I hope they strike out with the hire lol. Seriously though with the facility and MLB success, there’s no reason why State shouldn’t be a consistent Omaha team year in and year out. It’s a destination location and college baseball blue blood. Ugh I gotta go take a shower and clean up after saying that.

As a State alum and fan, I have always been a Mike Bianco fan going back to his days when I watched him play at LSU (and we had some great games with them back in the late 1980’s). I am glad that Ole Miss and USM are successful in baseball. When all three of us are good, it is great for Mississippi. Baseball seems to transcend the bitterness that you find in football. Good baseball fans appreciate great baseball when it is played by your team and/or the other team. Going to Omaha every year is really not realistic but being a regional team every year and playing in SR’s regularly is very realistic. We have been to Omaha 12 times in 55 years so every 4-5 years we should be there on average. With the right hire, we can be back up there in a couple of years IMHO.
NoWammies
What I’ve always loved about college baseball is you don’t have to be some big named college to play for and win a World Series. It’s been the MS schools best chance for a national championship over the years. You can also have the Fresno St and Coastal Carolina’s of the world make some noise. You get hot at the right time offensively and/or have two lights out pitchers with a decent bullpen and you got a chance.
rebmus
My money is on Lane Burroughs being the new baseball coach at MSU. The guy already HATES Ole Miss, he's a perfect fit.
pancho
He sure does but I haven't seen his name on any list at this point.

Would not be my Plan A but not the worst Plan B or Plan C in the world.
Bulldogs4
Heck of a game Ole Miss & State in softball and ends with a walk off two run HR by State! Unlike baseball, we have two good clubs in that sport.
Bulldogs4
Tough loss for Ole Miss at Okie. Need to win at least one this weekend. Harry Carey (in futility) said the following about the Cubs “Hope Springs Eternal “ For State, Hope is almost doomed but the door has a small crack (a very small crack). Must win two this weekend… No confidence that we will. KY is decent but they are not a world beater either. We will see… State women win the softball series over Ole Miss in another competitive game (3-0). Will go for the sweep today but that will be difficult as Ole Miss has a good team. Dawg83
State run ruled Kentucky in the first game of the doubleheader. Does Justin Parker have that Gary Henderson magic? Guess we are gonna find out.
Dawg83
Don’t call it a comeback…. State took both games of the DH. Finish off the sweep tomorrow and the tourney discussions become real, IMO. But they somehow are still alive for now.
Bulldogs4
Huge win 6-5 in 11 innings to win the doubleheader and the first two games of a series for the first time all year. A sweep would be great but it is always tough to do. Though I said earlier that State needed two sweeps to offset being swept twice earlier in the season. We will see what happens. Ole Miss needs to salvage a game tomorrow. USM has been on a roll lately.
Dawg83
State is at 9 SEC wins. If they can get to 14 I think they are in the NCAAT. And it’s doable. But gotta win 5 of the last 7.
Dawg83
And just like that, State is back in the postseason hunt.
Bulldogs4
Huge win today. Need to win two against Ole Miss this weekend. Can’t afford a slip up at all. Atmosphere should be off the chart for this series. We will see what happens. Certainly like the way we are playing now. Hopefully we can continue the momentum.

Dawg83
4-2 against Ole Miss and Mizzou should get State in the NCAAT. 5-1 and I think they would be a 2 seed. 3-3 and it’s going to be very iffy whether or not they get in. Margins can be that slim where just a couple of games makes all the difference. Next weekend is also a huge series for OM’s hosting chances, probably must win in that regard. Dawg83
It does seem like State is pursuing big names initially in this search, at least to make them say no. Brian O’Connor and Wes Johnson have both gotten some buzz, we will see how legit that interest ends up being from their side. People like to joke about Selmon just hiring someone from Oklahoma, but don’t forget that Selmon played football at Wake Forest… May be relevant as Tom Walter’s name has started to come up a little more.
