Really there are no weak teams and with the State/Ole Miss being the bottom of the barrel, that is saying something. Though Ole Miss’ last three series have some winnable games in them. Even though there is no game that you can say is a gimme. To your point, I was leaning toward Georgia being the weak link this year and then they took a series from Kentucky who had been red hot. Ole Miss is currently in last place in the league but I don’t think they are as bad as their record indicates. All 14 teams are in the RPI Top 40 at the moment, that is insane. Bulldogs4
Honestly nothing that happens this weekend will be surprising. I do agree I don’t think either squad will sweep the series. Don’t think either is capable of that. What I would like to see from both teams is high level baseball. Good pitching, good defense, some timely hitting. Obviously I want State to win the series but I want it to be won as opposed to lost. Example, State lost a game to UK because a WP allowed the runner to score from third base as opposed to a base hit driving in the winning score. Of course we need to beat UAB first. Every game is critical.
Dawg83
I’m very skeptical that either of these teams ends up in the NCAA Tourney but at the very least this weekend is potentially massive for Hoover purposes.

To be fair, State had nothing to play for in Hoover in 2019 and 2021. This year there’s a chance their season may depend on what they do in Hoover, if they get there. I just think if State manages to squeak in this year, that they actually need to put forth some effort there and try to win a game, or two, or three. Bulldogs4
Critical win for State tonight but difficult losses for Ole Miss and USM. Especially Southern losing 13-0 to Bama. Ole Miss lost to Memphis by giving up a 4 spot in the ninth inning…ouch that hurts.

State could save us all a lot of time if they just put a ghost man on first to start every inning, because they’re gonna end up walking that many anyway. Lol. State hasn’t lost a series to OM since 2015 but there’s no way to get a good read on this weekend. Both teams are totally unreliable right now. I know the Saturday game is probably breaking the NCAA on-campus attendance record so that’s cool.
Bulldogs4
Friday night’s crowd will probably be huge as well. They are unveiling Polk’s statute Friday afternoon. If the weather is nice, it will probably break a three day weekend series record crowd too. But as for the games themselves, who knows what will happen. As you noted 83, they could be high scoring. Although, when these two play , often times what actually happens is just the opposite from what is expected to happen.
rebmus
MSU definitely looks to be the better of the two (OM/MSU) but OM has set the bar very low. I think MSU takes 2 of 3 this weekend.

Put our emotions on a rollercoaster Does Jurrangelo pitch this weekend and if so, does he bounce back from last weekend? I think they need to let him do his thing if he pitches and not just keep him confined to one arm.

He's just a true freshman and they've definitely put a lot on his shoulders. He definitely has a chance to be a remarkable pitcher, but like you said he's got to get confidence and he's got to get older.
maroontide06
Jeff Brantley was good because he was a seasoned veteran in '85. Jurrangelo will get there, but it will take time.
Dawg83
I would not hate the idea of moving Jurrangelo to the bullpen for a moment and letting Loftin get a weekend start. Though he’s had control issues too.

You go get him, but I've noticed that the coaches will not do that for some reason or another in our losses. Instead of trying to stop the bleeding and contain the damage they just let things spiral out of control until there's no chance at a comeback. I realize the coaches aren't out there playing the game, but they can certainly use their intuition and make a call before things get completely out of hand. That probably speaks to the fact that State has like zero bullpen depth. I mean this staff has an ERA over 11 in conference play, only one guy is under 5. Right now it’s Dohm or bust out of the pen. State really needs guys like Nixon and Hunt to step up.
Dawg83
Ole Miss wins a surprising pitcher’s duel 3-2. Game probably should not have been that close, State had very few base runners while OM had double digit hits and left a bunch of guys on base. rebmus
Ole Miss takes game one 3-2. We'll see who steps up in the next two games, getting a series win is BIGLY for both teams.
Bulldogs4
Great game tonight and Ole Miss earned the win. Hard to win with only 3 hits. State was fortunate to even be in the game. Ole Miss could have easily scored 6-7 runs. And just as I thought, since we all thought it was going to be a slugfest, it was a pitchers duel. Shaping up to be a really good series. Typically, when you see a boxscore of 12 hits vs 3 hits... it's a lopsided win.

State’s pitchers did a respectable job but it felt like they were hanging on for dear life just to keep State in the game.
rebmus
MSU takes the win 8-7 in the bottom of the 9th. That was a great game to watch, better for MSU fans obviously. Ha
