Dawg83 Posted February 17, 2023 Share Posted February 17, 2023 Happy Opening Day, friends, State and OM both start kinda soft with VMI and Delaware respectively. One of those weekends where it will be a head scratcher if you don’t sweep. But great mascots, VMI Keydets and Delaware Blue Hens. I don’t have much to say about those teams otherwise. LOL. USM hosting Liberty in an under the radar good series. Liberty has been strong the last couple of years, USM obviously has pretty high expectations this year. Last second prediction for the season: Ole Miss and USM both host Regionals, State gets in as a 2 or 3 seed, and I think of the three, USM will be the best team in the state this year. Like 83 said, weak opponents so I don't think these games really told us anything other than both teams won easily vs teams they should have won easily against. About the only negative was three errors but maybe some of that was first game jitters. Otherwise, there was a lot to like today. Good starts for Ole Miss & USM too!!! We missed an XP (no surprise there) again this year to lose by one. Last year that was a bad omen and it sure sours the start of this season. Gartman on the mound will go a long way in determining that, I assume. When you think you've seen it all with these Lemonis coached teams, just wait because you haven't seen it all yet. I know some of that is on the pitchers but you have to wonder how big of a loss Logan Tanner is going to end up being. You can’t have teams running on you that easily. Got blown out by ULM tonight, it was 11-0 at one point and State only had one hit going into like the 7th inning. I can’t really pinpoint one thing that has seemingly caused this downward spiral for State baseball, but it really is something. I’m normally the last guy to read much into a midweek loss but so far things just feel like a continuation of the total mess that 2022 was. The rest of the staff pitched well. 3 errors on defense Not scoring a run until the seventh inning All adds up to be a big fat L. I think USM had 5 pitchers drafted, lost #2 weekend guy Waldrup in the transfer portal, and seems to have picked up right where they left off last year.
