I was one of the ones that said he was finished for good. Only because I heard him say that in the Pressbox at Wayne County last season. This is a great hire and with the athletes that Meridian has he will win.

Cant wait to hear slicklizard opinion on this. LOL

I wouldn't be scheduling any championship parades just yet.  Boyles, while one of the better coaches in the history of MS, is long in the tooth and walking into an albatross.

Does he have the energy/stamina/drive in advanced age to restore the glory at a program which no longer has the good bones and infrastructure in place to be a potential juggernaut?

Doubtful.

You make some valid points here and I certainly don't think Meridian fans are scheduling championship parades at this point, but they needed a hire like this for their sake and for the sake of Mississippi High School Football in general.  I know things at Meridian are a far cry from where they were, but if there's anyone that can resurrect a storied program like Meridian it's got to be Marcus Boyles.  The man has won at a high level everywhere he's been and is there any physical hard proof evidence that he can't do it at Meridian?  I'm sure he's bringing every piece of luggage he has to Meridian.

Mississippi doesn't need Meridian.  The landscape changes over time in every state.  Once proud programs fade in every state and are replaced by others -- much like Picayune and Oak Grove have risen to become standard bearers while Meridian and South Panola are in -- likely permanent -- decline.

If Boyles doesn't rescue this thing, then Meridian is soon to be another Moss Point.

Marcus is 57 that’s far from long in the tooth lol. He’s forgotten more about football than most people on this board know. I never said plan a championship parade but I wouldn’t bet against him either. He will bring in coaches that fits his program and the athletes are at Meridian they haven’t went anywhere. He will get them out he always does.

Nobody has any illusions about us being back to where Meridian was in the 1920’s, 30’s, 40’s, 50’s, 60’s , 70’s , 80’s, 90’s, 00’s and even up until the last 7-8 years.

But IMO Coach Boyles can energize the community again. Cheyenne is an excellent AD. Together I think they will make a good partnership. I hope that the program can be restored again to being good and competitive. Douglass did help stabilize the program over the last couple of years. We were six points away from the playoffs this year.

Now having said that, Meridian High has a lot of problems and this is not going to fix that overnight. But a strong football team can be a force for good at the school and in the community. Obviously the city as a whole has issues with crime, neighborhood blight, struggling schools, gangs etc. No easy antidote for all that but this hire certainly gives me (and others as well) some hope for the future. We will see how it goes going forward.

@MeridianMomma64how are your boys feeling about this hire?

The boys said they had a meeting today and they seem like they are really positive about this next season.  I’m happy to get good influences for these boys especially with mine comin up from middle school!

Seriously . He will win and win big. And this season too..He’s got what he never had in petal.      I agre it was a boss move by the AD..

I will be rooting for him there but for me it was kind of depressing. It’s not about Meridian either. They have always had some good athletes who deserve to win.

Only a couple of other people know what I’m talking out. Our luck lately is bad. Things just never line up. It’s like there is a jinx .

Like I stated in a previous post. Cheyenne Trussell is the best AD in the state. This is definitely a home run hire. Just wonder how deep in the piggy bank Cheyenne had to dig to land Marcus. I could imagine it wasn’t cheap. But I would say well worth it. If anyone can right the ship, it’s Marcus.

what are year one expectations for a hire like this?

Everyone I talked to seems more than happy about this hire! Seems like the community around here is ready back this coach! I know the boys are ready to get going!

My boys are ready to fight for their spot! Welcome to Meridian Coach!!

Keep us up dated on his staff hires. I will be interested to see who he plugs in for OC and DC
