Douglas not coming back as Meridian coach

Great hire for Meridian. I personally do not see them being a year in and out state championship threat, but I do believe he will make them relevant again and a solid football team. The problems at Meridian are far beyond just athletics. He will do well there.

For decades the one thing that all Meridianites, black & white, took pride in was the football team. Meridian has no college team in town so the high school team was always the main attraction. However, over the past  5 or 6 years or so the white community had stopped going to the games as crime seemed to increase around the school and the football team floundered. This hire has the potential to revitalize the football program which in turn could lead to the revitalization of the entire city. It could get many of the white alumni, still living in the area, back in the stadium on Friday nights. This thing can be turned around if the entire city can get behind it. I can't think of a better person for the job than Marcus Boyles.

Coach Boyles got all of Wayne County out to games on Friday Nights rather it be home or away. We had more people in the end zone tailgating than visiting teams had in the stands. So you’re right it is a great hire and he’s a proven winner!

You are absolutely correct. As I mentioned previously we have many problems in the city and with high school and many of those cross over to the other. 

The football team has been a source of great pride for generations white and black (we were and still are all Wildcats). 
This hire has the potential to generate that again. I don’t pretend it will be easy or happen overnight. And like I said nobody expects an immediate State Championship but I hope to see us become relevant again. That is very possible.

Hey Dub,it seems like he's been at Meridian forever because he started as an 8th grader.  Next season is his last season,and I hope  Boyles can improve the OL to block for him.

 Never underestimate the power of revenge, Bricks. Marcus hates losing more than any coach I know. At Wayne County he would take them into the next season looking for payback. He took  abuse from OG and Brandon.. I suspect that’s still in his craw.

Old man football has left Ray stadium. The ball will spin with the athletes Meridian has.

Meridian will get better as it goes. First it will be hard to win at Ray Stadium again. It will be a challenge to beat Meridian in a year or two.

It takes 4 things for a successful program in Meridian:

1) athletes - check

2) training facilities - good but needs improving

3) motivation of these athletes to want to compete at a high level

4) coaching to teach these athletes how to perform at a high level

The last two are exactly what Marcus Boyles excels in.

Meridian got gang problems and it's a dying city. White folk go to the county schools or Lamar.

Meridian be got athletes.  If they don't be thugs Boyles gone win with them.  He won't put up with sorry kids or people.

That is an issue and it has been problematic over the last 5-6-7 years. But I think there is still potential to turn this around. As I mentioned it will not be overnight but Coach Boyles IMO has the personality and the coaching acumen to reach out to these kids and the community and maybe win these kids back in to the fold. 
 

Meridian has serious problems with gangs, neighborhood blight, struggling schools, crime etc. But the city is not dying. Downtown has seen a very nice revitalization and lots of good things are going on. 
 

But back to Coach Boyles, I think a lot of people are excited about him and I think the alumni support will come back again. Hopefully that will bode well for the future of the Wildcats and as an extension of that the Community as well. 
We will see how it plays out.

Will he be able to get the top assistants to follow him? He cant coach every position on his own.

Ain't close far as pro careers go. Not even same world really.  Dupree did nothing after HS. Some his fault some not.  Hull was the best Mississippian in that league far as I remember.  All pro in the NFL to.

At the HS level Marcus Dupree was the best offensive player in the history of MS football. Now adding in the USFL component makes a bit tougher.The crippling injuries that he had at OK and later in the pros decimated his chance for a great pro career. 

 

Kent Hull was an undersized center who developed into a great center at State and then later for a short time in the USFL but really made his mark as the glue (center) for the Bills during their great run from the mid-late 80’s - mid 90’s. 
 

The greatest defensive player in the history of MS high school football (IMO) was Demetrius Hill of Meridian. Led the 1985 Wildcats to 9 shutouts and the defense actually outscored the opposing team’s offenses 37-34 for the entire season. Held Michael Fair of Starkville to under 100 yards both times they played. He was a DT with an amazing combination of strength, agility and quickness. Was virtually unblock able. Teams tried everything possible without success.

Yep! as good as Daniel Hill is in high school, his dad was better. The best high School defensive player I've ever seen.
