Heidelberg had 4 seniors on the team last year. 2 started.  They had like 6 juniors starting.  They also had 4-5 9th graders starting.  And finished as runners up to Charleston by 3 in last years champ game.  They returned 20 starters off that team.  They will bring back 17-18 off this team  next year.

Yes their best players are 10th graders. They lose a couple of offensive and defensive linemen, and a linebacker. They return probably 8 or 9 on both sides of the ball.

The only thing I think Heidelberg has to watch out for now would be if their coach leaves for a bigger job. He has got himself a championship now, so he could look for something bigger now that he has that. One good thing Heidelberg has in their favor is that not a lot of schools can pay a head coach what they pay. Carter is making big money at Heidelberg, and you know he won’t leave and take a pay cut, even if it is at a bigger school

Only places I could see him “wanting” to go one of them, northeast jones, has a new coach that will likely be there as long as he wants.  And the other is Wayne County.

But honestly, he didn’t do too well I don’t think in previous stints in larger classifications.  And given the crap Heidelberg went through for several years leading up to it sort of being handed to him cause no one else wanted it, and the turnaround he has given them, this just may be the best fit for him.

I could see Quitman or meridian reaching out if they need coaches in a year or two.

I hope they do have a great crowd.

I just know their regular season games don’t pack out their own stadium - which is significantly smaller than “the rock” and the number of fans they have who travel to away games is typically pitiful. They don’t even fill a small visitor’s side when the game is less than an hour away.

So hearing that they were touting 20k fans was odd. I mean - good luck to them & all. They SHOULD have a large crowd when they’re playing less than 5 miles from their own home field.

edit to add: I’ve had family members recently who were on the field playing for opposing schools when playing HHS. Both home and away. So this is from my own personal experience. I’ve been to their stadium and I’ve seen how they travel with my own eyes

Many years ago, Meridian played Hattiesburg at The Rock. Crowd was about 8,500. Probably one-half or more were Meridian fans. And when we would play them at Patrick Stadium, we would have about half the fans there as well.

I get it that people are excited but having 20K for this game would be a big stretch.

I only remember him coming from Shannon. I think NEJones offered him the job last year and he turned it down. Or at least that’s what I had been told. But again, I don’t know if NE Jones pays what Heidelberg does. I don’t think they do, and nobody is gonna take a pay cut for a new job unless they are just miserable where they are at. I actually could see him being a good fit at somewhere like Wayne County, or Laurel, or Quitman.

I think he was at Kemper cpu Ty a few years before Shannon.  I may be wrong.

I was told that basically Milner was in place to be the new nej coach a couple years before it happened. It was basically set up.  But when it came time for coaching hire the principle at Nej, carters friend and former high school team mate, was going to offer it.  But the jones county good ole boys club intervened.

When Oxford played oak grove at USM several years back, looking across the field toward the OG side, it was pretty full on the bottom deck. Oxford brought a respectable number of fans from home too. Especially students. They are both really big schools. Very much “football schools.” But even that matchup in the largest classification of the MHSAA didn’t produce 20k fans.

He actually thought he had the job at Wayne County even come to the school board meeting to accept the job. Bobby Jones was superintendent then it was right after Coach Mangum left. The board went into an executive meeting at the last minute , when they cam out they didn’t hire anyone. I believe it was the next day if not it was within a couple of days they hired Shelton Gandy and shall I say the rest is history. So Daryl Carter probably doesn’t won’t anything to do with the WC school system.
