Home vs away seems to matter more in basketball than any sport. I think State beats SC by 8 to 10 points when they make the return trip to Starkville later in the year. And OM probably still loses to UT if they played Oxford but I doubt it’s that lopsided Same reason I pretty much expect State to lose to OM in Oxford and win in Starkville. That seems to be how it happens most years, anyway, State swept last year but it still took OT to beat a bad team in Oxford. I said all this then realized road teams went 5-2 in the SEC today. State and Ole Miss were the only road losers. lol.
NoWammies
I think a lot of folks say Arkansas, Bama and A&M thinking they’re the team that they’ve been prior but this year they have just been ok. Arkansas had a big win against Duke but they also lost to UNCG. Both A&M and Arkansas has lost to Memphis so that tells me Ole Miss is capable of beating both. Bama doesn’t have the inside presence as they have in years.

Bama is a step down from last year but still good. Arkansas might not be very good. I will say I think Ole Miss got it slightly better on the SEC schedule than State. State has to play Kentucky and Bama twice. Ole Miss only plays Kentucky and Bama once, and the Bama game is in Oxford. Both teams play Auburn, SC, and each other twice. Dawg83
State only dropped one spot in the NET to 33 with their loss. Ole Miss tumbled nine spots to 68, I’m guessing mostly due to the score being lopsided. State hosts No. 5 Tennessee on Wednesday, Ole Miss hosts No. 48 Florida. Bulldogs4
Huge opportunity for State to make a statement. These are the type of games that Howland always played close but could not win. If you are going to climb the mountain, these are the type of a games that you must win. We will see what happens. TN is a tremendous team but no team in BB is invincible. And the FL game is a must win for OM. They are catching FL at a great time, right after a gut wrenching loss to KY.
Dawg83
I still believe Bama on Saturday is the more winnable game for State. But it’d be just as good in terms of the NET. Tennessee is 5, Bama is 6. Really need to find a way to win at least one of those two at home.

About the middle of conference play is when you can tell who everyone really is. Heck State beat Northwestern who beat Purdue, but I don’t think State will be in contention for a 1 seed.

Yeah by the first or second week of February we should know what most teams are.
Dawg83
Gotta say I disagree with Vegas on these games tonight, they have Tennessee and Florida as both very slight favorites. I think UT wins fairly comfortably and I like Ole Miss to win at home. One thing I hate about college basketball is early January. Just sucks to have huge home games when students aren’t back in town yet. Curious to see what the crowds are like.
Dawg83
Man, really impressive first half by State, up 13 at the break. Gotta hang on and I’m sure UT will make a run, but this would be an enormous win if State can finish this off.

That was as good of a first half as you could expect from State though.

Dawg83
Wow! What a game. Phenomenal win for State. Best win for the program since…. Man I can’t even remember. Maybe winning the SEC Tourney in 2009? It’s been a long time since they’ve beaten a Top 5 team.
Dawg83
Shout out to the one court stormer in the banana suit who got arrested because State is allergic to fun. Free the Banana!
Dawg83
Ole Miss playing very well too, in total control right now against Florida. And host a terrible Vandy team on Saturday so should move to 2-1. State has another huge home game against Bama next.

Dawg83
Admittedly this is my first time watching Florida this year but their whole team is built like toothpicks. OM is just totally overpowering them physically. Seems like UF is more of a finesse team that doesn’t know what to do when they get punched in the mouth. NoWammies
I said with the Tennessee game, Ole Miss showed no physicality down low. Tonight has been a different story. Sharp has played his best game of the year. Cisse still has a lot to learn though. He is consistently out of position and leaves his feet. Guard play has been outstanding tonight and has made shots to keep Florida from coming back. This is an all around team win.

You’ve gotta protect your home court in these 50/50 kind of games and Ole Miss was very much up to the challenge. After looking shaky on Saturday, both State and Ole Miss looked like legitimate NCAA Tourney teams tonight.
NoWammies
Georgia beats Arkansas putting them at 2-0 in the SEC and Arkansas dropping to 0-2.

At 7-5, he should be averaging at least 5/game.
Dawg83
State is up to 27 in the NET after the big win last night. Ole Miss is 57, so basically back to where they were going into SEC play.

State is gonna have to make some shots too on top of defending well. Wouldn’t say it’s a must win game now that you’ve beaten Tennessee, but can’t overstate how big two Top 10 wins by mid January would be. Win Saturday and you’re playing with house money when you go to Rupp Arena on Wednesday. Edited January 11, 2024 by Dawg83
