Would take something truly incredible for them to make the NCAAT. State is still alive. Lots of work yet to do but it’s out there for the taking. The Gov. Bulldogs4 Posted April 24, 2022 Share Posted April 24, 2022 Combest’s Home-run may still be in the air. That ball was crushed. Plus he hit a curve ball which generally his weakness. The game was just like I thought it would be. It was going to be a game down to the wire and neither team quit fighting. I think the two teams combined for about 20 HR’s this weekend. But the difference was State hit more with men on base than did Ole Miss. I think only two of Ole Miss homers were with men on base. The Pearl game is very important as well. Probably a good thing this series ended today. By Tuesday everybody’s pitching will be rested and I suspect we see pitching by committee at Trustmark. Which is probably about right, very little difference in these two teams. I don’t think this game changes much in either direction. Yep, not much difference between these two struggling teams. 2-2 overall but MSU is 2-1 in SEC play vs OM and that's more helpful between the two teams trying to get an NCAAT bid. Most SEC teams can get in the NCAAT with 13 or 14 conference wins, I’m not so sure State doesn’t need 15+. 15-15 probably is enough to get in. 14-16 and you’re gonna need a win or two in Hoover. 13-17 or worse and you pretty much have to win the SEC Tourney. OM is probably in that group that can get in with 13 or 14 wins. But that’s going to be hard to get to. Not impossible, but very difficult. Ole Miss firmly out in both projections, USM is currently a Top 8 seed in both. State just needs to keep winning series. 4-2 against Mizzou and Florida the next two weeks feels like a must. Ole Miss needs wins too but Fayetteville is a tough place to go looking for them. But who knows, the West has been kinda weird this year. MSU is getting on track with 14 wins, the RPI is certainly an issue but 4-2 will help a lot I figure, especially if MSU takes the series over Florida which is around #12 RPI. Bulldogs4 Posted April 28, 2022 Share Posted April 28, 2022 Honestly, I don’t see either State or Ole Miss making the NCAAT. It is what it is. Neither of us are better than average right now. Opportunity is there but realistically it is hard to see State going 7-5 over the next 12 games. For Ole Miss, you need to go 9-3. I think 15-15 is the minimum barring a run in the SECT. And It is hard to envision either of us making a deep run in the SECT. I had predicted us going 2-2 against each other and that is what happened. Teams are about equal overall though there are some differences in the strengths and weaknesses of each. All that said, I hope we keep battling and find a way to make it happen. DeLucia for OM and Brandon Smith for State have both been excellent in recent weeks as Game 1 starters, regardless of what the rest of their teams have done. DeLucia has been money the last two starts for Ole Miss. One good win for each. Now another must win game looms tomorrow. We will see what happens. I guess if there’s a silver lining it’s that you go into a Sunday rubber game with your best pen arms totally fresh.
