Feels like this Sunday game is really important for State in terms of keeping NCAAT hopes alive. I don’t hate the remaining schedule and think it was more front loaded than people realize, but obviously you’ve gotta get going at some point. The magic number is usually about 13 SEC wins, though 14 or 15 may be necessary given State’s weaker nonconference record. Going to need to go on a bit of a run the next month or so. Shocked by the results in Oxford this weekend. I know Bama isn’t a bad team anymore but I expected Ole Miss to take care of business at home. Did not foresee this team starting conference play with five straight home losses. I am feeling more confident in my take that USM is the best team in Mississippi this year. Lol. They had an opportunity to win two games @ Dallas Baptist and had they done so, they would probably be a top 15 or close to a top ten team right now. But those three losses hurt. They could very well be a regional host if they keep playing well. Disappointing weekend to this point for both State and Ole Miss. Both have must win games today. Ole Miss’ pitching woes are hurting them. State’s non-existent clutch hitting has been a killer. Pitching this weekend has not been overly bad but you have to score runs to win baseball games. LSU is a good team, losing a series at home is one thing but shouldn't get swept. Bama is an average team, you shouldn't lose a series at home to them... definitely shouldn't get swept. They’re having a historically great season but we’ve all seen these kind of teams not be the last man standing at the end. Bulldogs4 Posted April 11, 2022 Share Posted April 11, 2022 The Tennessee team is an interesting situation. They are on an unprecedented roll right now. But baseball is somewhat like soccer. It can be a cruel game. For example last year, the pitcher for Virginia threw a no/hitter against us for 7+ innings but then a walk and HR completely destroyed his effort. Nobody remembers what he did. Just like Arkansas was dominant during the season but then lost two games to NCSTATE. rebmus Posted April 12, 2022 Share Posted April 12, 2022 OM beat Murry State today. That sure wasn't a "yay we won!", more of a "thank goodness we didn't lose!" Ha Beating Murry does nothing to help, but losing to them would have hurt the RPI even more. Kendall Rogers was on SportsDrive today and talked about USM/OM/MSU. He also mentioned RPI is the biggest factor of getting NCAA baseball tourney bids. He's big on USM and thinks they have potential to be a NS. Currently ranked 11 and RPI of 11. OM is currently RPI in the mid 40s (I believe that's what he said), which should be good enough to get a bid. Only one team in the modern era ended up in the tourney with an RPI of 80 at this point in the season. MSU's current RPI is 90. I knew MSU had dug a whole, I didn't realize it was that deep. Plenty of time for OM/MSU to work themselves back up the ladder, but the margin of error is getting pretty slim for OM and is very slim for MSU. They happen occasionally and this is our year to be on the bottom rail looking up. Obviously there are a lot of games left but Reb you are right. An RPI of 90 is not going to get you anywhere. Plus we are over half way through the season. We are who we are. Might as well play some younger kids and give them some experience. The veterans outside Hancock are just not producing this year. Gosh knows he knows more about this stuff than I ever will. MSU picked up the win tonight in interesting fashion. Tied 3-3 after 8. UAB scored 2 in the 9th, MSU answered with 2 in the bottom of the 9th. MSU scored another in the 10th to win. But the overall picture is still bleak unless we turn it around in a hurry. If we are going to have any chance we have to win two this weekend (really a sweep is needed). Yep, 14 is the number MSU and OM needs to be (basically) a lock for the NCAAT. 13, it depends a LOT on the RPI. I lean OM gets in with 13 SEC wins (assuming they don't crap the bed OOC going forward) but MSU misses out with 13. 12, definitely need a strong SECT showing... and probably an SECT win to get a bid. With a 4-8 SEC start for both teams, getting to 13 will be a task... 14 a bigger task. Both teams have a hill to climb and definitely need to pick up series wins (really could use a sweep) this weekend to get on track. Yeah- OM/MSU better be focused on trying to win this weekend before thinking about next weekend... I suspect they are. Oddly enough, OM is 4-2 on the road and 0-6 at home in SEC play. I lean OM wins the series at USC this weekend and loses the series to MSU next weekend. Both teams are in a similar situation right now. Unfortunately had another arm injury tonight with Auger, this pitching staff is snake bit this year. Would be a massive series win against a good team if State can find one more this weekend. Auburn gifts us a win tonight but I will take a win anyway we can get one. As I mentioned a while back these are the type of games State is going to have this year. Alabama is playing good ball right now. UT now has a two game losing streak. Can State finish the sweep? To win today would be crucial. Really need it badly. Weather permitting. Realistically they are not all winnable but that is going to have to be the mentality of the team. Pitching is going to be a crap shoot. Throw the dice and see what happens. Ole Miss has more wiggle room but they still need to keep winning as well.Right now they are down to SC 5-2 in the 7th but need to find a way to win today. USM with a sweep today.
