College Baseball Season

I'm truly not hating on MSU and yet the entire notion of winning a natty one season only to turn around and lay an egg the next season has become so cliche in the world of sports. I'm not convinced Miss State will finish as poorly as their current record. It's hard for me to imagine Lemonis failing to right the ship prior to seasons end. The newly acquired skill set of the Bulldogs to master the art of rolling over and playing dead is rather convincing at this point I might add.

OM run rules Alcorn State 16-1 in 7 innings tonight.

Many of OM's position players were replaced after the third inning, still put up 7 runs in the 4th inning.

ASU gave many gifts by walks/HBPs early. Once they started throwing the ball over the plate, OM crushed the ball.

State split the two games in Biloxi with Texas Tech. Thought they played really well in the first game, less so in the second but I think you can live with 1-1 in those two.

Four games until SEC play and all are at home against Princeton and Binghamton. Feels like that needs to be a 4-0 stretch to start making up for the bad start. And then you start conference play in Athens next weekend and we’ll see how the heck that goes.

Yes that is correct and then the SEC is going to be ten-athalon. Every weekend is going to be tough with only Missouri being really bad (but remember what they did last year at DNF).

Jury definitely out on State. IMHO, right now we are a mid-level SEC team with some potential to be better but it will take some considerable improvement to get there over the next two months.

State sweeps a winless Princeton team, Ole Miss takes 2 of 3 from Oral Roberts. Now onto conference play where we will really see who is legit and who is not.

Initial takes from me are that Ole Miss is about what I expected. Elite offense, pitching can be up and down. I’ll be shocked if they aren’t a Regional host and in contention for a Top 8 seed/SEC title. State is kind of a mystery. Really bad start, dealing with some key injuries, but still plenty talented. Somehow they’ve lost Sims and Hunt and are still getting good starting pitching for the most part. Offensively they are going to be hot and cold, bullpen is kind of a mess right now, need some guys to step up. I see them more as a 2 seed in a road Regional, middle of the pack in the league team. But as always capable of getting hot in June.

Nice job by MSU getting the sweep this weekend. This may be the confidence boost that team needs heading into SEC play.

The 1 loss to Princeton by OM today will hurt the RPI some, but probably still #2 in the rankings. Most OM fans I know are like me... very happy with the start but not getting too excited because we've seen how this movie typically ends.

Both teams have the talent to make some noise, we'll see how the season goes.

OM actually up to #1 in the latest D1 poll. State still at #23. Both teams open SEC play on the road, Ole Miss is at Auburn and State is at Georgia.

If there is a single dominant team in college baseball this year I’m not seeing it to this point. I thought it had a chance to be Texas but they just lost two games to a not great South Carolina team and have had some injury issues now.

On one hand it feels a little gratuitous to put OM at #1 after playing a pretty soft schedule to this point, but on the other hand I’m not sure anyone else has a great case,

Obviously D1's poll is the most accurate!

Kidding aside, I'm not sold this OM team is THAT good... but I guess OM has as strong of a resume as anyone else right now.

The bats are expected to cool down some when OM starts facing SEC pitching. Even still, I think this team will hit well.

Pitching is much more average than past years' teams. That's a valid concern, we'll see how they progress as the season goes.

I'm mainly concerned about the Defense. Costly errors will lose some games for this team unless the D improves.

You can overcome average pitching with good hitting and strong defense behind the pitching. If the pitching AND defense remain average, the SEC schedule will know OM out of the top 10.

For State making a Regional will be a good accomplishment. One thing about injuries, as bad as they are, 1. They are part of the game. 2. It creates opportunities for a guy to blossom, so you never know how this may develop.

As far as Simmons & Sims go, both injuries are very unfortunate. But hopefully, both will heal and be ready for a successful MLB career.

Unless some pitchers figure it out quickly, State will not see their CWS streak reach 4 straight.

They are kinda due for a no Omaha year anyway. It’s not realistic to expect it every single season, no program does that.

Having said that, this team is no more dead in the water than the 2017 or 2018 teams were early on. And one of those teams made it to Omaha and the other made it to a Super Regional.

I think State will get KC Hunt back fairly soon, if he can find his fall/preseason form then that will help tremendously at this stage. The starting rotation has actually been fine even with all the injuries, the biggest issue has been the bullpen. You’ve had to elevate some of your best pen arms to starters and now you’re scrambling to replace what those guys were in the pen.

Ooo wee, that was a nasty ass night in Hammond, La for the Rebels. Two straight lackluster losses right there. Don’t be ranking us No. 1.

Ha, I was coming to post basically the same.

#1 is the kiss of death for OM, what a crappy performance tonight.

1 run on 3 hits against SLU?

3 errors and gave up 5 runs?

Eh it’s only your third loss and it’s on the road in the midweek. Wouldn’t worry too much about it.

However, would like to reiterate my point about there not really being one dominant team in college baseball this year. Just the SEC feels wide, wide open, and the national scale is no different.

College baseball fans are some of the most fickle in the world.

Some State fans were blasting Lemonis after last night’s loss.   He doesn’t make good coaching decisions in game and he can’t develop players.

After last night’s OM loss, people were dead set that OM wasn’t hosting a regional and Bianco is done.   They’re about to take a road series in week one.
