What’s going on in Wayne County?

@slicklizardmaybe you can answer this question for me.  Before consolidation in Wayne County which team were most folks fans of?  You've got the Whippets, Tigers, Buccaneers, and Panthers.  I'm sure folks in Wayne County could pick one from those four teams, but what is the general consensus there or is there one at all?

It was what high school you went to so support across the county and in the city was divided up. Bobby Hall changed all of that and unified everyone behind one football team.

A wannabe hack has destroyed all that and now nobody supports anything but it's gotten him some sweet committee positions in Jackson so he can crow about that I guess. The current system of seven classes. Yes he was a part of that.

Now I'm hearing there wont be any more JR high or youth  athletic programs out in the county. There will be only one team that all participants will be bused to the high school to attend a practice. EVERY DAY.

Here is the bottom line . They don't want any kids to participate in athletics. They want to steal the money that is budgeted for it in addition to what is already being stuffed in their pockets.

In your opinion, is it possible that WC has a better record than last season but the team will be worse? Considering that WC downgraded the non region part of the schedule.

I'm going to answer it like this.

He only won three games last season so there is room to get worse and he chose to schedule Kevin Gandy right out of the gate. That jr high offense we are running ain't that hard to stop so 0-3 right out of the gate is very possible. If that happens things will snowball. WC will be worse this year after losing some great athletes to WA and others  just not wanting to be part of the LOW T offense or the defense . We would lose in 2A just because of being so transparent and basic. They won't even let them  compete in 7 on 7s.  A team that plays like old men ran by old men.

After thinking about it I don't think the record will be better. Last season was who Wayne County is right now.

I will say this about this season and last season. Did we play up to potential last season absolutely not. Coming from someone who’s in the building a lot there were a lot of locker room issues. You have to have players step up and replace leadership that graduated. We did not have that and it definitely showed.
As far as this upcoming season we will see the big names are not on the schedule but the team from mobile is loaded with D1 offered players. I believe we play Kevin Gandy’s team in the preseason game. Sorry I don’t have a schedule in front of me but we play Morten I believe they have at least one D1 player maybe two. Greene County I don’t know anything about them. Play George County who has a Notre Dame commit playing Quarterback. So we’re playing some talent the question will be did we get the leadership issue fixed because we have some talent as well. Is it WC of old? No

I’ve got a question for the newspaper man up in Waynesboro or anyone else ?

Where are all these kids on these JR high teams going to ? There was a couple of DE on one of them that looked like some of our DL of old. Clara had a team loaded with lineman and skill players a couple of seasons ago. They get to the high school and are never heard from again.

The kind of players that Marcus and Mangum used to go into the playoffs with regularly.

Theres plenty of players. What’s missing ?

Do you recon they transferred to nearby schools like Quitman, Heidelberg, NEJones, and West Jones. Or maybe even Laurel. Petal now?

You will always lose a few transfers but not the numbers that Slick is talking about. In the past three years there’s been some really good players come through the Jr High feeder programs and several of them. You have to remember there are five Middle schools in Wayne County they all field pretty good teams and probably around 25-30 players each. We all know you’re going to lose a good number of kids they may decide I want to play basketball or they may say hey football just isn’t for me. But we’ve always got the ones that love it to play but we’re in a slump for some reason right now. I speak of the past three seasons because I have a grandson that was in that timeframe he’s 6’2 and 270 but would rather work and make his own money than play. I hate it because there’s going to be a lifetime of work but only one chance to play high school football.

Oh I know the reason.  Somebody text me a clip from them practicing an offensive play . They were all in tight in the low t hambone formation and a player come in motion then just stopped halfway across. The ball was handed to a rb ,the motion player just stayed frozen and the play was gone.,, LOL. Speed for days and you want to bulldoze and gadget your way to 3 wins again.

They going to get our kids busted up trying to run this antiquated crap before district play even starts.

Slick I've been following this post for a long time and it's obvious how you feel about the state of the program.  I'm just curious what direction you think the school should go in to fix the issues.  At one time WC was the talk of the state and nobody wanted to play them.  The talent levels can't have fallen off that much.  What type of coach is needed to fix it ( Young Coordinator wanting to make their mark, Old Proven Guy, Local Guy, etc...) or is it strictly admin issues.

A young guy like Tracey Lampley would get us back on track but he’s not even going to apply as long as choad is the principal. Nobody else worth a dam is either for the same reason,

Todd Breland tried before he took South Jones and choad threw his resume in the trash. He left South because he heard WC was opening up again but choad talked Hankins into staying when he heard a group of us were going to make a push for Breland. It’s come out of the hole under his brown nose that he will never bring in anyone associated with Marcus Boyles who forced him on his first day as head coach.

A coach is not the problem. It’s the choad he’s the one that’s has to go no matter who his father in law is.

What are you referring to in that last sentence about Boyles' first day as HC? I'm intrigued lol.

On his first day as head coach at Wayne County he told Hathorne he wouldn’t be running his defense and would no longer be needed. I heard he as he was carrying his boxed up stuff out Todd Mangum pulled up and walked in. He’s been bitter and broken since.

Time for players to walkout or protest the school board meeting

Oh they walking out and down a couple of blocks to play for Coach Breland.

It’s not the kids job to solve this their parents should.

The problem has been nobody knew what the cause of this mess is.  People are waking up to it though and looking  in the right direction. His name is being thrown a lot more now.

I was in Waynesboro last night passing thru and stopped in a fast food restaurant. A kid had on football equipment and was waiting for food. Looked like he had to be about 5th or 6th grade. An adult in line spoke to him and asked was he ready to be up at the high school and play. He said I am going to Wayne Academy when I get up there. Kind of caught me off guard. Seems like this may become more of the norm in the future for Waynesboro.

Well it is a problem for both WC and WA. WC for losing kids that could and would bring them back. The Problem for WA is going to be they are about full and over full lol. They can’t build on because they are land locked. They have a beautiful campus and very well maintained. I have a grandson up there and he absolutely loves it. I don’t know how many more kids they can take if they build it would have to be up. They renovated their football stadium during the summer new home and visitor bleachers, new play clocks and scoreboard , new press box, remodeled visitors locker rooms, new ticket booths.

No. They will start next week. For awhile anyway ..As things crumble sponsors will get harder and harder to find. Wayne Academy will stream theirs on Facebook at thewaynecountynews

edit : academy doesn’t play until next week
