I agree with you all; the posts on this topic today are spot on. I believe there are 25 schools in 7A.  I can think of 4 off the top of my head where the AD/HFC positions are combined, and 2 are in Rankin County.  Old habits are hard to break, for some.  At the higher classifications, at least, the positions should be separate.  A 7A HFC cannot effectively fulfill the requirements of both positions, especially in the Fall, without a lot of assistance/dependence on an assistant AD (or two) and/or without taking a toll on his personal well-being.  It’s worthy of note that combining the positions of HFC/AD gives the principal of the school absolute and total control of the athletics program, to go along with his (already) inherent control of the educational program.  HFC walks, out walks the AD in the same pair of shoes.  Principal makes the hire; total control (pending Board approval, of course).  Combining the two positions also effectively eliminates females from the pool of AD candidates. Finally, combining the positions  of HFC/AD is not in the best interest of the school’s overall athletics program.  Separation of the HFC/AD  positions lends itself to overall athletics program stability, consistency and performance in our ever-changing, revolving-door modern world of head football coaches.

Columbia is happy

They're the real winners in this. Pogue will not sprinkle some magic fairy dust to get Brandon over the hump Chip did a better job at Columbia than he did. Sam did a great job at Brandon and still couldn't get the job done. If im not mistaken itll essentially be the same staff so I dont see Pogue walking in and overhauling the program without some backlash. Pogue is also 56 years old and hasnt won a championship or competed in one in over a decade.

Makes me feel like everybody’s happy except for Brandon.

I think in viewing his overall resume and experience, Brandon should be happy. You are getting a guy who has won over 200 games and 5 state championships. The problem is, as someone eluded above, it has been over a decade since he has even played for a state championship. I think he is a good football coach, but I do not think he really moves the needle for Brandon and I expect them to be a really good program, but not sure they can get over the hump especially with Oak Grove expected to be much stronger and experienced this year.

I think if there is anyone who can get it done it’s gotta be Lance Pogue. Home run hire in my opinion.

He will be able to win and I think he will win at a high level, but there is tougher competition out there.  How does he fare against that and how many years does Brandon get out of him?  If Brandon can get 6 years out of him, then yes they are a winner in this too.

Success all depends on how many pulpwood haulers vs Nintendo players he has on the line and can they dominate the likes of Starkville, Tupelo, and Oak Grove. Winning South is not the issue. It's dominating on the line against Clinton, Starkville, Tupelo or Madison Central. And keep the ball moving and scoring in the championship game. They have had the QB, RB, and WR to get the job done. And he may bring in 1 or 2 new assistants maybe in 2026.

He inherited a Columbia team that averaged 11.5 wins per season the past 6 seasons and had competed for and won a state championship in 2 of the 6 seasons. He won 8 games and got bounced in the 2nd round.

What is the talent pool going to be like in Brandon? I know they have played for a title a couple of times in the last few years but are they going to be able to sustain that level of competition in the near future?

I think it depends if he can keep Hartfield and MRA from going shopping with Sam leaving.
