Chunky6617
The MHSAA is all about the money, and always has been. Very few coaches have any respect at all for anybody that is involved with the MHSAA.
Bulldogs4
Certainly greed ($$$) is at the center of this. But the kids playing are getting the short end of the stick here. If the season were to start September 1st this year, the sunset is roughly 720-730P depending on where you live. The 7P kickoff is not necessarily a problem then as the sun will be setting right after kickoff. Plus I think attendance will be higher as well. Traditionally Labor Day has been the first weekend of football for high school and college though many years back both used to start around the middle of September. Regarding the heat, I think there are enough precautions in place in the present day to protect the players and coaches. And heat is not worse today than it was forty years ago. We have better A/C today and kids don’t stay outside as much these days for a variety of reasons. Your body acclimates to the conditions you are in. When I was a kid, we stayed outside all the time and our elementary school did not have air conditioning. But it was not a big problem because we did not start school until after Labor Day and most of us had little A/C in our homes either so we were okay. Today schools start a month earlier and they all have A/C out of necessity. And finally again , as Chunky noted, the MHSAA is all about money and most any other stuff gets lip service. We went two a days on a baseball field that had more rocks than grass. We all made it just fine and there we very few water breaks lol. Now the turf is another issue the fields look great and low maintenance but extremely hot. My Grandson played on a turf field in all stars for baseball. That’s the first time I’ve saw the umpires give heat breaks every two innings they had a five minute water break and sit in the dugouts under fans to cool off. I’m 59 years old. Your baseball field had grass?

ccbulldog
I've been to numerous games than started at 7pm and seen the visiting band not even be to the stadium by kick off.
pancho
the football game is simply an activity prior to and after the band performance anyway. Most times the team gets the first 2 buses that finish their routes the earliest and then the band can't leave as early as the team.
Former Coach
This is why the MHSAA instituted the rule. They were advised by the Medical and Trainers Council that they work with as well as their attorney. Yes, like many, i drank water from a hose, rode in the back of a pick up, and many other things that those of us from the 70's and 80's did. These kids today don't do that. They sit in the house and play video games except for the couple of hours each day of workouts they may have. They don''t walk or ride a bike everywhere they go like we did. Yes, most are going to be taken care of by their coaches with plenty of water breaks, rest breaks, and other things, however, in todays society it's just not worth the risk of the big L word.
TigersFan
Here is the ultimate thing. It is about liability. I heard from a coach at the district meetings the MHSAA said we are not policing this, we are not out riding around schools to see if you are following the guidelines. If something happens to a player and it is shown that you are in violation you are on your own. Good Luck! The MHSAA does not care about kids, they don't care about the schools and coaches. Only people they are worried about is themselves. They hire people that follow there Old Boy network and put people in to place on committee's that fit their agenda. It's sad that an organization meant to help student athletes is so corrupt and power hungery!
JagsFan77
I'm just curious how many more days of practice will teams in the north get versus teams on the coast.

I think you are going to see a lot of teams move to morning practices after this year or some who have the resources, will build covered/indoor facilities.

All depends on cloud cover. Its cloudy and chance of thunder storms in parts of N. MS today so heat won't be an issue, just storms. Latter part of last week and over weekend wet bulb, which is what is used was anywhere from 88 to 93.

This is going to lead to new indoor facilities across the state. It's crazy expensive and it will give the schools with more resources a huge advantage. I'm randomly wondering what constitutes "indoor" facilities. Siding? Walls? Walls with HVAC?
Former Coach
Guidelines for Practice Wet Bulb Temp Below 87 You Good 87-89.9 2 hour max practice in shorts, helmet and shoulder pads. Remove pads before conditioning. 90-92 1 hour practice in shorts, shirt only. No pads. Above 92 No practice until it gets to acceptable level above. In all cases 4 water/rest breaks 4 minutes each. In other words teams should not be scrimmaging each other this week should they? This is the 1st week you can put the pads on to hit

If it is different, how do you determine what it is based off of the actual temperature?
U Remember When
Seems like years ago, we didn't have our first practice until later sometime in August. I remember playing games when it was freezing and these were just late regular season games pre 1980. Start two weeks later like the old days. Maybe eliminate the off week (nobody likes em anyway). Maybe we could go to a late season game and actually have to throw a jacket in the truck.

That includes the MS/AL game and the North/South game. To get that done the season is starting right where it needs to be. And I dont think they would want to move those all star games back to January.

I believe you could do away with the preseason scrimmage, make the regular season 10 games no bye week and you could get finished before Christmas break. If they don’t do something you’re going to see a lot of schools with the budgets put up 50 Yard indoor facilities. Small schools will be the one’s paying the price in the long run.
ccbulldog
There's also no reason the Ms-Al game and the north-south all str games can't be played the same weekend, just at different times or days. could play one fri night and one sat

U Remember When
Roughly August 5th is the midpoint of summer. It just seems a little early to be in full pads. The start of fall is around September 22 and most teams have already played half their regular season schedule. I'm 64 and like to reminisce like everyone else about how tough we used to be and I remember the one water break from a garden hose. But I swear I don't recall any 2 week period straight with 97 to 100 temps. Maybe the officials could take a little more time between possession changes, an extra minute to timeouts and so forth. There's not a perfect solution but we should be able to figure it out.
