Huge win for Ole Miss over Memphis. Beard is clearly making an immediate impact. Much like Jans for State last year, I think you’ve seen enough here to think this OM team may have a realistic path to the NCAAT.

Also saw where Georgia Tech beat Duke, so maybe State’s loss to GT wasn’t as bad as we initially thought.

Cisse did a nice job of grabbing 9 rebounds off the bench.

I have no idea how good Memphis may be this year but they're likely an NIT team at worst... good win.

The schedule gets MUCH harder when SEC play starts, Ole Miss really needs to keep piling up the wins they can now.

IF Beard does enough to get Ole Miss in the NIT, that's a good first year.

Been upset city this weekend with GT beating Duke, UNC Wilmington beating Kentucky, Drexel beating Villanova and Wisconsin beating Marquette today. Had Northwestern beat #1 Purdue last night. A lot of parody this year.

State’s nonconference schedule got a nice boost with those Northwestern and Georgia Tech wins.

Way way too early, but right now KenPom has State 26th and Ole Miss 89th. I’d say State has played the tougher schedule so far and may have the tougher OOC schedule still to play, but Ole Miss has a very viable path to 12-1 or 13-0 before SEC play and that’s significant considering they went 12-21 last year.

I’ll be at the Hump tomorrow for State vs Southern U, eager to see the new renovations.

State with an absolute disgrace of a loss to a 1-6 SWAC team. That’s the kind of loss that good basketball teams don’t come close to losing. State was a 26.5 point favorite.

This thing turned in a hurry. A week ago I thought State could be an SEC contender, now I kinda think maybe they’re nothing more than an NIT team.

Not sure what exactly has happened here but we’re at kind of a pivotal point early in the Jans tenure. First time since he’s been here that things have been at a crossroads, but here we are. Unbelievable.

State drops another this time to 1-6 Southern after being up 12 with around 5m left.
It’s odd the announcer made the comment that when State scores above 60 how well they’ve done under Jans.  That was when State was up 59-50.   State never got above 60.

I was wrong about State being better offensively. This team still can’t score.

I thought they had a scorer who can create his own shot in Hubbard, but that’s a big ask for a true freshman.   They still don’t have a consistent shooter.

The loss to GT wasn’t that big of a deal, but the one today should never happen to a good team.  I know upsets to smaller schools happen, but it’s usually good smaller schools.  Not 1-6 teams. lol

This is an example of why I'm not beating my chest over Beard starting out 7-0 at Ole Miss and predicting NCAAT bids.

Beard has done a great job in his start at Ole Miss, let's see how he finishes this year and next year before talking about the NCAAT.

Same. You'll hear no shit talking out of me about OM basketball just yet. Long long way to go and the road will get much tougher.

I think it’s fair to give praise when it’s deserved and also criticism when it’s deserved.

Jans absolutely did a great job with his first team and was off to a really strong start this year. But the last week is highly concerning and not scoring 60 in a loss to a bad SWAC team is unacceptable.

And getting back to basketball. Way too much has been made of the loss to Southern. We still have a top notch team. But I said after the Nicholls game that we were playing like we were entitled. This loss was probably the best thing that could happen to this team. I think we will return to playing like our blue collar identity now. Instead of trying to look good and flashy.
Team will be fine going forward.

That’s a positive outlook.  All I can say is State better be a lock for the NCAAT near the end of the season because the Southern loss is what keeps you out if it’s close.

Certainly can’t afford anymore clunkers but I noticed a few other SEC teams have dropped some games that should have been slam dunk wins. Basketball like baseball on a given night most any team can lose to an “on paper inferior team.”
That is why March Madness is March Madness especially the first weekend.
We will see how it goes from here.

Gonna have to disagree on the Southern loss not being a big deal. That’s an absolute resume killer come Selection Sunday. I do think State is better than what they’ve played recently, but that loss is going to stick with them and require them to win more SEC games than they otherwise would’ve needed. And the SEC is really good this year.

The margin of error for postseason play is already small as is and they just made it shrink significantly.

I would be willing to bet that no other NCAAT caliber team has a loss as bad as the Southern loss. They are basically a lock to have a NET in the 300’s. It wasn’t just a bad loss, it has a legit case for being the worst loss in program history. At least in the modern era.

I have a feeling Ole Miss picks up their first L today. If they win I’ll start being optimistic about this group and start buying in.

You weren’t at least optimistic  after winning at Temple,  blowing out NC State and beating Memphis? Man, you a tough cookie to  crack.

Because it’s the same team that bout lost to Detroit, Sam Houston and struggled against Mt St. Mary’s and Alabama St. I wanna see how they respond first time back on the road after a big win that’s lifted expectations because they played flat against Mt St. Mary’s.
