Anyone surprised by Marks entering the portal?

I guess nothing should surprise us anymore.  I’ve been watching college football since I was probably in junior high 30+ years ago.  I’m actually starting to get less interested in it now.  I don’t have a problem with players getting paid, but there is absolutely no structure to any of this now, and combine NIL with the transfer portal and the extra Covid year and social media and it’s a big mess. I guess I’m one of those old grumpy dudes now.   Respect my decision. Lol

I thought he might declare for the draft. Don’t think State was expecting him back either way. He has taken an absolute beating in that role for 4 years so I don’t begrudge him for any decision he wants to make. He’s been a starting RB since basically Week 2 of his true freshman year and in the Air Raid that entailed get clobbered in the flats A LOT.

State got a QB commit from Blake Shapen formerly of Baylor. My understanding is that the idea is for him to be the backup, which given his numbers I think would be a very good pickup. As a starter he’d be a little uninspiring, but he’s put up decent numbers at Baylor. Curious to see what else Lebby tries to do at QB.

I wonder what the QB situation was like at Baylor.  It would be odd to start for 3 years, then transfer to be a backup.  Although that’s what Spencer did at OM last year.

I could see a situation where Lebby “settles” for Shapen for a season, and goes all in on the Van Buren kid who decommitted from Oregon to be the future QB.

shapen will start unless Lebby pulls Gabriel or one of the  other top names

My understanding is they are still pursuing Gabriel, DJU, and McCord with hopes of landing one of that group. If they don’t, yeah Shapen has a chance to start.

There have also been murmurs that Ty Simpson from Bama may be State bound, but he’s 1. Not in the portal yet and 2. Less experienced than these other guys. He’d have 3 years of eligibility still but obviously hasn’t proven himself yet.

I believe Shapen had some injury issues this year and they are ready to move on to their younger QB, who ironically is former State QB Sawyer Robertson.

Baylor has had a rough couple of years since they beat Ole Miss in the Sugar Bowl. Aranda is very much coaching for his job next year.

Not really surprised by Marks transferring. He needs a fresh start somewhere else. He is a fine running back but he is not a workhorse RB. He will need to share time with other RB’s to be effective and hopefully injury free next year.
I wish him all the best and if he goes to the right NFL team he can be a successful RB at the next level.

I doubt State lands DJ either cuz he looks like more a lean towards FSU and could you blame him? There he could stick it to Clemson. All signs show McCord going to Nebraska unless something surprising happens.

I agree that McCord probably isn’t coming to State. DJ will depend on how hard FSU pursues him. I know he wants to go there, but not sure how bad they want him. I know they are also pursuing Cam Ward. That would be the scenario where DJU ends up at State, FSU gets somebody else first.

The problem State has in portal recruiting is they’re having to sell an idea/vision, where as other schools (even Ole Miss) have tangible results they can point to. When you’re talking about guys with only 1 or 2 years of college left, a rebuild can be a really tough sell.

I could be wrong but I think Cam ends up at Ohio St.

The next tier of QB candidates would be someone like De’quan Finn from Toledo or Chandler Rogers from North Texas, if they don’t land DJU.

Or maybe it ends up being Shapen and a younger, less proven transfer competing with Parson for the job. I mentioned Simpson but like I said, not in the portal

I’ve heard he is willing to go to a bigger school and sit for a year if needed. Oregon and Michigan I’ve heard as destinations for him.

I could see him going to Michigan since that’s where he’s from. I kinda figured he’d end up at some Big 10 school closer to home.

You would think any SEC team (even Miss. State) could quickly attract quality transfers regardless of recent trajectory.

Mississippi State has the current SEC Freshman of the year at QB, why are they looking for a QB?**

Kidding aside, these freshman of the year awards probably need to just go away in this new era of open transfers/NIL.

Fans used to be excited because they have the freshman of the year, but now they’re like “oh shit we have the freshman of the year, he’s for sure leaving”

Parson making the all freshman team made me laugh loudly. I think he’s potentially got a bright future but the kid played in two games this year.

They’ll get some but they need A LOT. Just don’t think it’s a situation that can be immediately fixed in Year 1.
