Yeah I think everybody’s sources are lining up in terms of him being Selmon’s first choice.

Chadwell should be near, if not AT, the list of potential MSU hires.

Liberty can afford to pay him pretty well to stay and wait on a bigger offer, I don't think he leaves Liberty just yet unless A&M decides to throw $8-9 million at him with a huge guaranteed long contract... that's something Mississippi schools can't compete with.

Seems like the last day or so the search may have shifted to the state of North Carolina where you have multiple P5 head coaches worth keeping an eye on. I think Elko would be one of the preferred options for State, we will see on return interest. I could see Doeren or Clawson having interest if State reached out.

Putting some context clues together on things….

I think Elko is waiting on an A&M or Michigan State offer. If neither of those come, State might have a chance. But I would be a little surprised if he’s not the coach in either College Station or East Lansing next year.

The way it seems to be trending right now, I tend to think State’s next coach comes from this group; Odom, Fritz, Sumrall, Lebby.

If I had to pick one of those four as my preference, I’d probably go Lebby, honestly.

So Chadwell turned down State’s offer?

State has alumni willing to pay the buyout, so it would have to be something other than financial related to have to go in another direction.  I still wouldn’t rule him out though.  He would be a better hire than Lebby for sure.  If Selmon has to settle, I don’t think that will be a good look for him.  He needs to knock this hire out the park and then some.

Lebby would be a risk for State given his lack of HC experience, but the offense would immediately be more interesting. Going from Arnett to Lebby would immediately draw comparisons to the Croom to Mullen shift.

I always felt like he would end up being a factor in this search. He was one of the most obvious Selmon/Oklahoma connections.

So do you think Lebby would be a high floor/low ceiling type coach?

If State has to go that route Lebby would be a good hire.  Venerables was already feeling heat last year because of the offensive production, and under Lebby they haven’t had any problems with the offense.

Myself I was skeptical of Lebby when he was at OM because we all know Kiffin is the offensive mastermind and Heupal got the credit at UCF.  However, he must actually be a good play caller and game planner.

No, he’s high ceiling/low floor to me. Best case scenario, he is a Kiffin or Mullen type game changer. I’d consider that a high ceiling. Worst case scenario, the offense doesn’t work or he can’t be in charge of a program effectively and it’s a mess.

Others may have different opinions, I personally am willing to accept some risk for a guy who can maybe give you a Playoff ceiling. I’m less interested in guys whose best case scenario is you’ll go to the Music City Bowl every year, even if their floor is higher.

If Ole Miss can stack up multiple 8-10 win seasons in a row, there’s no reason State can’t do it too with the right coach and the right amount of fan support. The mentality of being OK with 6-6 and hoping for 9 or 10 wins once or twice a decade needs to become a thing of the past.

Would Lebby be Ole Miss first choice if Lane goes to A&M?

This year? Nope, Lebby wouldn't be the first choice at all.

Lebby would be on the list somewhere though I'd bet.

Lebby's name is much like Arnett's name the past couple of prior seasons (and including this season for Lebby), someone will give him a HC shot soon enough.

All indications are Lebby is the guy for State and it should be official by midday Sunday.

There are risks with any first time head coach but Lebby is one of the select few coordinators I was good with. His offense has worked at every stop and State needs a big overhaul on offense. DC hire will be key and he’s gonna have to work the portal hard. Not expecting a ton in Year 1. But there is definitely potential here.

Kewl, maybe they'll make it past 10 games and still employed.

I think the emergency eject button is gonna have to be retired for a while. Gotta give Lebby at least three years, IMO. But there’s a path to them being good sooner than that.

Unless Lebby gets caught calling hookers or something with a University phone... I agree, you HAVE to give him 3 years minimum.

If MSU is going with the "up and coming OC/DC" route to hire, Lebby is a decent gamble.

Lebby has paid his dues and deserves a shot, much like Arnett deserved a shot.

We'll see how it plays out for Lebby IF he's the man.
