Bulldogs4
I am not that concerned. Certainly frustrating but the last four games have all been winnable. As I have mentioned baseball is so fickle. Tonight Bauer pitched pretty well in the eighth inning even though they scored runs off of him. The hit batsman was his only mistake and it was costly. We just need to win a game and kind of get the monkey off our backs.

I don’t think this team’s postseason ceiling is any different than it’s always been, but if it you keep losing games the path is not going to look like what was expected. What seemed like a slam dunk Top 8 seed a couple of weeks ago could morph into a 2 seed in the Hattiesburg Regional if they’re not careful… Interesting spot the next two days. Tennessee used its two best arms in extended fashion to get that W, but State burned the Valincius bullet and still lost. There’s some pressure on Stone and Foster the next two days to say the least. Bulldogs4
Continuing disappointment for State as we were manhandled tonight by Tennessee. Ole Miss with a blow out win over LSU and USM drops a decision at Lafayette. Ole Miss is playing well. State is terrible right now and USM is mediocre at best. Two of these teams need to right the ship. I do believe both will turn it around and in time will be playing better baseball. However it is apparent that State was never a top five team or even top ten team. Top 20-25 team, yes but I do think we were given the benefit of a really good new coach and an infusion of talent that made us appear better than we actually were. We certainly have the potential to be that good going forward but as of now we are not.
Dawg83
I don’t see this State team as particularly tough. I mean they haven’t shown it to this point at least, other than maybe the Friday game in Oxford. Sorry but tough teams don’t lose five league games in a row at home (and I won’t be shocked if today makes it six). Yesterday was the most discouraging loss in this stretch. All those losses where weird things kinda happened and it was easy to make excuses, and you follow that up yesterday with a loss that was never really close or interesting. I think they’ll figure it out eventually. But eventually may be too late for some of the bigger goals and expectations this team had. Which hotel in Tallahassee will all the State fans being staying at for that Regional this year? I don’t think this team knows how to win games that aren’t essentially blowouts. They either jump on teams early or they have little chance, so far at least. Edited April 12 by Dawg83
DrownInEtown
We gotta remember this teams still relatively young and have a lot of new faces. Things like this will happen, especially in baseball. 4/5 losses were very winnable too

Dawg83
State was 4 games ahead of OM in the SEC standings 14 days ago. Ole Miss now leads State by a game. What a dream two weeks for OM and a nightmare two weeks for State.

Bulldogs4
Ole Miss looks good (two weeks ago, Bianco was going to be run out of Oxford on a rail…oh wait there are no more tracks in Oxford) and now some Ole Miss fans are disgusted because the team is winning. Go figure. State OTOH has just … I am not sure what… During most of this six game losing streak, we have not necessarily played bad but we have not played winning baseball. We are not doing the little things that win baseball games. And give UGA & TN a ton of credit. They were both better than us across the board. USM is a puzzle as well. Not as bad as State but definitely struggling in the last month.

It is a bizarre twist that in the span of two weeks we now have Ole Miss in great shape to host and State and USM very much doing everything in their power to be sent on the road for the postseason. hasbeen67
And this is why I can't commit as a baseball fan any more than I do. The game is just too fickle. I understand being young, lots of new players, but that's basically what it is for everybody now. All three teams may well still end with successful seasons, but the road to get there is hard to watch. All we have for now is the old saying, "you are what your record says you are". Truly weird that State has lost six in a row and is still only two games out of second. You never know what will happen in the postseason, but I can’t say it’s been an overly impressive SEC so far this year. If the season ended today the top two overall seeds in the NCAAT (probably by a comfortable margin) would be UCLA and Georgia Tech. The SEC is just a log jam of pretty good but clearly flawed teams. pancho
this is what i envisioned when the SEC went to 16 teams.
hasbeen67
Yes, the only positive over football, maybe, is you don't physically destroy each other in baseball. Maybe it makes you better by tournament time, but makes it harder to receive favorable seeding.
Dawg83
State at Samford is a weird one to see on the schedule tonight but that suddenly feels like a pretty dang important game for State. Edited April 14 by Dawg83

Dawg83
OM continues to play really well. Smoked USM in Pearl tonight. Not really sure what to make of USM. Are they more the team we saw in non conference that looked like a Top 8 caliber team or are they more the team that’s largely underwhelming in the Sun Belt and the occasional midweek? Samford isn’t what they were a few years ago but good to see State have somewhat of a return to form. We will see if that translate to weekend success. Ole Miss at Tennessee a pretty huge series suddenly with both teams in a groove. Texas State is a good team coming to Hattiesburg this weekend. South Carolina is playing better since they fired Maineri but State has to go win that series and I’m not really interested in excuses otherwise. Go get it done. rebmus
Out of the "Big 3" sports, baseball is easily the most unpredictable sport. When a good team gets hot, they can quickly become a great team. When a great team goes cold, they can quickly become a good team. Baseball can be so streaky and turn the other direction at any point of the season. pancho
Big weekends for the Big 3 in MS this weekend which could really make or break the seasons for USM and MSU. Texas State is capable of sweeping USM and USCe is hungry and playing much better since getting rid of the coach. I think Ole miss stands a decent chance of getting to from the big orange. Dawg83
My gut: State wins two on the road against an improving but still bad SC team. I’ll give State that, if nothing else they’ve been successful against teams that aren’t as good talent-wise this year. Tennessee defends home turf and takes two games from OM. But this one could easily go the other way. I don’t love USM’s recent trend, I have Texas State winning the series at The Pete.

Some calling for a potential 50 win season and not losing a conference series and then being a top 8 national seed. Baseball will humble you quick. Now there is even more pressure on them. A few more losses and the only way of being in a regional will be to win the conference tournament

Sitting at 8-7 when Coastal is 13-2 is not very good optics for USM.
Dawg83
Good vibes for all three teams tonight. State and USM both grab much needed W’s. Ole Miss continues to look really impressive in their opening win too.
David44
Very good night. MS and USM used 2 pitchers each, starters were excellent which sets you up with a rested bullpen. USM was 6 for 10 ROB an 4 for 6 RSP. Gave up 3 runs to the top offense in Sunbelt conference. Very encouraging BUT as inconsistent as they have been in the last 20 games, I need to see more of this going forward.
