Bulldogs4
USM bounces back and beats Arkansas State 7-1. Sets up a rubber match at Noon Sunday. Wonder if they will be able to get that game in with the weather moving Sunday afternoon?

Dawg83
Double whammy for OM yesterday, lost the game and also Townsend left with a shoulder injury. He’d been one of the best Saturday starters in the country to this point, hopefully it’s not anything long term. Rubber game in Austin today too. I still view it as OM playing with house money, having the win from Friday already in hand is sufficient but finding one more win would be a potentially huge deal for them. Preseason Sunbelt poll had them around 10th. I think they finish in the top 4 when the dust clears.

Imagine if you go 20-10 in conference play and another team is 20-9 due to a rainout and they get seeded ahead of you by finishing a half game better. Bulldogs4
Arkansas State takes 2 of 3 from USM. They are a team that nobody really wants to play right now. They are playing loose and obviously have some talent. If you are an USM fan, this what you fear. Play well against P4 teams and then you stub your toe against your fellow conference teams (who are going give you their best shot).

They may win the conference and still host a regional, but their expectations of a 50 win regular season and winning every conference series was expecting too much
Dawg83
I definitely underestimated Arkansas State. Good to see that they seem to be a program with a pulse now after frankly they weren’t at all until the last year or so. OM didn’t follow up the win on Friday well, got spanked on both Saturday and Sunday. Still can’t complain much about salvaging one game in Texas. But obviously some health questions now about the weekend rotation. Forgettable weekend for all three MS teams. State hosts Vandy next weekend, Ole Miss hosts Kentucky (who swept Bama this weekend), USM hosts Troy who has underwhelmed so far but still a talented team, I know they won a midweek game against Georgia if nothing else. David44
USM had their chances yesterday. Down 3-2 in the 7th, go ahead runners on base and run into the 3rd out at home plate. Runners in scoring position in the 8th and fail to score also, then AS hits 2 HR in the bottom to pad the lead. Not the end of world, but hopefully humbling in a good way. They have to realize that carrying a Top 10 ranking puts an enormous target on their back to every SB opponent. Last year, Coastal went 26-4 in SB play, but 2 of those 4 losses were their 1st weekend road trip at Troy.
DrownInEtown
The state of Arkansas just had our # this weekend. Rough weekend for Mississippi teams. At least Team USA got a good win tho
Former Coach
On 3/14/2026 at 8:21 PM, Dawg83 said: State drops the second game of the DH and Arkansas takes the series. Just didn’t play particularly well in Game 3, several defensive blunders and the bats went quiet after the second inning. Still think State is in a good spot overall, I’m not going to pretend that only salvaging one game in Fayetteville is the end of the world. With the SEC as loaded as it is, winning one on the road is ok. If you get two and steal a series that great.

I think State will have opportunities to win road series (looking at you, South Carolina), but a little unfortunate for both State and OM to start on the road with Top 5 teams. 1-2 is definitely not the worst possible outcome. We’re talking Mississippi State baseball here. SC will suddenly turn into the hottest team in the country when State comes to town and end up sweeping us
pancho
I really do feel the catcher position is the most glaring weakness on the state team followed by the unknown of the pitching staff. I think they staff is almost throwing it on the wall to see what sticks after the first and best 4 arms.
hasbeen67
Hasn't catcher been somewhat of an issue on and off for several years?

Dawg83
If Milewski is working his way back in, I think catcher will be fine. He missed about 3 weeks with an injury. Started the first Saturday game this week. Doubleheader maybe the only reason he didn’t start the second one. He’s more of a boom or bust power guy at the plate but thought to be the best defensive catcher State has. Edited March 17 by Dawg83
David44
USM gets by Nichols State 4-0. Bats are still In a funk. Coach OZ shuffling the lineup up an new DH which is needed right now. Meanwhile, not sure who is following the WBC championship, but USA down 2 0 in the 6th. I liked Mark Derosa as an Atlanta Brave but my goodness, how do you sit Gunner Henderson after the impact he had Sunday when they beat Dominican Republic. David44
Also, notably from the USM game. Colby Allen came out of the pen, faced 4 batters. I guess this could mean 3 things: Grayson Harris is moving to the Friday night slot. He has been the best weekend starter. Colby is moving to Saturday and Oz just wanted to get him some work, or is moving back to the bullpen, and there will be a new Saturday weekend starter(Crabtree?) Dawg83
After watching Jacob Parker for a month and knowing that his brother was a Top 10 draft pick, gonna need someone who knows high school baseball to explain to me how anyone ever beat Purvis last year. Jacob is going to be a superstar. Maybe sooner rather than later. It feels like he has won a corner outfield spot for State, at least against right handed pitching, and that happened a lot quicker than I thought it would. High School Baseball in the Pine Belt area of Mississippi is just loaded. I know they lost the state championship to West Lauderdale. But teams like Petal Oak Grove Sumrall Seminary and others are all title contenders and have played Purvis.

Remember that 3 year run where we played New Hope every year from '01-'03. Back then the state championships were on campus and New Hope got 2 of 3 at home in '01 and '03. Picayune got 2 of 3 at home in '02. Needless to say, whoever was the home team didn't lose.

WL had one of its best teams ever last year. And that’s saying something for a program that’s consistently Top 20 in Mississippi even at just 4a But yea Jacob Parker is one of the best freshmen in the country Edited March 18 by DrownInEtown
