It's somewhat bewildering given they normally field a good to very good basketball team so there are athletes on that campus.  Culturally, it appears to incompatible with winning football games and nobody appears up to the task of reversing the status quo.

I know you've posted about the history of Biloxi before and I think you have a great insight as to why things are, the way they are, at Biloxi.

As the decades passed and the town of Biloxi was reshaped from a blue-collar, fishing and shrimping work force to a tourist/entertainment driven economy, so went the identity of those hard-nosed teams sixty years ago.

Biloxi has been an afterthought for most of post integration Mississippi.

@Archeryou made this post over two years ago, but it's a great post and I think it sums things up quite well.

Not many coaches who are serious about winning are going to line up to teach 2-3 classes and not have all their players in the athletic block. Not to mention not having all assistants either during those periods. Biloxi pretends to take athletics serious, but like many schools on the coast, do not. If they were willing to bend and do what it takes to really win, I think they could find some real consistent success. Too many schools feel that athletics and academics cannot go hand in hand. They feel one must suffer or the other and often choose academics (obviously) which holds back their athletic programs.

I knew a few years ago when Bobby Hall took that job and couldnt do anything with them in his 3yrs there that Biloxi Football was never going to be taken seriously. I know he was cocky and old school, but he was a heck of a football coach.

Back in the 1960’s and 1970’s, Biloxi was a Big 8 powerhouse and Meridian had some great match ups with them. In fact the Coastal Big 8 in those was stacked with great teams year in and year out. Hope they can get back to being a good program again. They played Meridian a couple of years at Ray Stadium and even though Meridian won going away, I thought they looked like a good team.

Picayune wasn't LOL.  That was a rough stretch for the Maroon Tide.  Calvin came on at the tail end of the Big 8 days and got it turned around for Picayune.

I’m curious if Gulfport breaking the mold of coast football at the highest classification in the state this year may have a ripple effect into biloxi and administration start to help facilitate a change in how they perceive football. Seeing a rival do well sometimes has that effect.

You would've thought that had begun with the hiring of an elite coach such as Dubose.  His early resignation is probably a sign of administrative dysfunction.

If it does, that remains to be seen.  Biloxi has only made it to the second round of the playoffs 4 times in the MHSAA era.  I saw where they made the playoffs this year with three wins and had a quick 0-1 exit.  They've never made it to the third round before and if they could ever just go 2-1 in the playoffs, it would be a major accomplishment for them.  It's going to take everyone in that community pulling in the same direction for it to happen though.

It may have a Gulf Shores type of effect.

Same thing happened with Bobby Hall. So with this type thing happening with 2 state championship winning coaches, something is definitely wrong in the Biloxi Administration when it come to football.

Maybe hiring “elite” coaches at the end of their careers isn’t the answer. I’d start with asking why they ran of Coach French. Seems like everyone on this thread is ignoring his tenure. Which by Biloxi standards was successful.

I said it when they first ran French off it was a mistake. He was a good coach who had been about as successful as you could be by Biloxi standards. Bobby Hall was collecting a pay check and the game had severely passed him by. DuBose was here to double dip and get a check himself. He was not able to recruit and bring kids in with ease like he had elsewhere and struggled. I am a firm believer in retirees are not the answer in the majority of cases. Many have already said it and it has been true for 20+ years for Biloxi (and many coast schools). Until football is prioritized and you give coaches what they really need to succeed, they will always underperform despite having the athletes to compete.

I know nothing about the smaller schools on the coast and I wont judge on just one season, but didnt Coach French just go 0-10 at Bay this past season.

Looks like it. But 3 winning seasons and a .500 year in his last season at biloxi. Better than the elite coaches that have used them for $$ and tucked tail after losing a while collecting the check.

Point is, it should be a red flag for a potential quality hire. What does success at biloxi look like? My guess is it looks like French’s tenure. Maybe winning a playoff game is the next step. But gonna take some time I’d think.
