Spring jamborees

Just got home from the Stringer jamboree. Several teams played, some I was impressed with, others I wasn’t. Magee and NE Jones was competitive, both offenses seemed to move the ball against the defense. Richton and seminary was competitive. Early on richton was getting the better of seminary but seminary was able to move the ball a little better later in their game. I would say they were pretty evenly matched. Stringer and richland was pretty much all offense. Both offenses moved the ball. Collins looked very much improved. Either Collins is gonna be much improved or clarkdale lost a lot from last years team. Or maybe they still have some baseball players out. Cause from the little bit I got to see, Collins looked better.

Mize and Bay Springs to me had to have been the best overall game. It was actually a really good scrimmage. Very physical scrimmage I thought. I don’t know how you would keep score but both offenses seemed to score equally. Maybe 5 or 6 touchdowns for both teams. Bay Springs still has plenty of size, and they have two offensive backs that are a load… #25 and #1. Bay Springs did struggle against the pass a little. We threw for 3 scores, but we will be a little better in the air this year than previous years. Bay Springs tried to throw it a little but wasn’t very effective. Their bread and butter is still running that wing. Good physical scrimmage overall.

How did the Meridian vs Wayne County spring game go?

After 3 Quarters it was 12-10 Meridian.
The JV played the 4th quarter. And when I left around 3 minute mark, The Wayne county jv was up 12-0. Meridian has a few pieces but I personally didn’t see enough to make me think they are a playoff team at this moment in time. Now there’s a long way to go between now and the season and there’s no chance I’d bet against MB so we will see how it turns out. As far as Wayne county goes, I wasn’t impressed but I also wasn’t disappointed. I think there’s some things to build on but I also think there’s a lot to improve on. I think the playoffs are in the picture but I didn’t see anything that would make me think that’s a state title contender even in a weak 5a. I’m still waiting on that next step in the process of the program being built back up and that might happen once the fall rolls around. Same team I saw last fall and that’s not necessarily a bad thing at this point in the process.

Those are my takes from the game. And I’m not one to take too much stock from a spring game, so my assessment isn’t super in depth.

Here's the thing.  West Point is going to need some competition in 5A and they sure as heck won't get it from the North, so who from 5A South can provide that competition?  I feel like the path is much clearer now for Wayne County to get there and that may be a good thing since we've gone to 7 classifications.  Which team in 5A South can the Maroon Tide pass the 5A torch to?  The answer to this question better not be Laurel or Gautier LOL!

Marcus was trying to find a way to shore up his lines on both sides and to set the edge for those backs. He still hasn’t found a qb but he will. He always does.

My assessment on Wayne County and me watching this fall.

The bottle is constantly pouring, but it never runs out.  The glass is constantly filling, but it never overflows.  What a predicament to be in!

Lol ok I’ve been filming games for the coaches at WC for several years including Coach Boyles years. I’ve learned through all those years don’t base you predictions of the upcoming season off of a spring game. WC is a lot bigger and stronger upfront on both sides of the ball. For most of the game the QB was able to throw the ball without much of a rush. Now I’m not saying you’re going to see Jerrell Powe and Benito Jones out there but we are better. My concern was QB and he played well last night he did throw one interception late trying to get us in position for a game winning FG attempt. Are we WC of old no we’re not but we’re not playing with the caliber athletes that we ran out during that time but they are working to get there. We have to have stability at the HC  Coach Hankins is the third coach in five years we’re going to be fine.

Great response there.  I completely understand when you say you're not the WC of old, but I honestly feel like this is a year for Wayne County to make some deep playoff  (late November/early December) type noise.  Will it happen?  I honestly don't know right now, but I feel like this is an opportunity year for y'all.

Now my take on Meridian they will be much improved. Hill is a beast with the ball in his hands. Unfortunately he was playing QB last night in a wildcat scheme. I didn’t see them play last season so I’m not sure if their QB graduated or what. I was told they were looking at young QB but wasn’t ready last night. They have two quick backs that would get the ball out of the wildcat and Hill can pass. Knowing Marcus like I do we didn’t see much of what he will do in the regular season. Defensively they will hit you so mouth pieces in and chin straps buckled. I think they will get in the playoffs but they are a year or two away but Marcus will get them there Meridian has too many athletes not to be a contender

After watching a a little bit of tape it was clear that both coaches agreed to mostly call plays that let the lines and front seven knock. And knock they did.  I will say this our offensive line is night and day from last year and mostly sophomores I think. Their aggressiveness was very apparent and they were looking for contact.. For the bad we didn’t score , same as last season and that carried into the fall. Some of that had to do with limited chances because of only going three quarters and Meridian grinding the clock but Poplarville did that last season too. I hope that’s not a trend or philosophy driven . We will be better than last season just on size alone .

As for Meridian like wareaglefan said buckle your chinstrap. Their LBers can run , have some size and looking to do damage when they get there. They definitely play with more of an attitude too.
