Kiffin’s portal strategy is a very boom or bust one. And kinda suggests that he’s “here for a good time, not here for a long time” as some might say.

If you hit on those guys then it’s all good, but if you miss on the majority of them then it can really hurt you in the short term and long term.

It’s practically rebuilding every year.   When OM was 7-0, Kiffin was the portal king.  After the 1-4 finish, some fans said “well 8-4 in a rebuilding year isn’t bad”.

You know more of what you’re getting in a player as apposed to a high school kid because they’ve had D1 experience.  Team chemistry could be an issue and if you have a different scheme, that could take a while to adjust to, if the player adjust to it at all.

Kiffin’s strategy is similar to Sherrill’s strategy in the mid/late nineties and early 2000’s.
He recruited a number high level Juco players and it worked for about 3-4 years but when the bottom dropped out in 2001 everything went S in a hurry.

I understand that today’s dynamic is different but there are parallels. It is a high risk and high reward strategy. So far it has worked well for Ole Miss and Kiffin is very good at maximizing what advantages he has available to him. Team continuity and chemistry are the biggest challenges to this strategy. Whether it will be sustainable is the big question. We will find out over the next few years.

I don’t have an issue with using the portal to fill some needs here and there… but having basically your whole recruiting class hinge on it is definitely a risk.

Granted, as someone else mentioned, what few HS players did sign with Ole Miss were largely pretty talented, including a couple of Top 100 prospects. But when you’re signing that few guys and then banking on the portal for the rest, it kinda puts pressure on almost everybody to be a hit or else the whole class is a bust.

And to be blunt, I don’t think Kiffin cares about what OM looks like in the long run. After his charades with the Auburn job, I’m fairly convinced this whole portal strategy is just means for him to win now and then bolt for a better job, and then the aftermath is someone else’s problem.

I agree it looks like that if he emphasizes the portal each year as he has so far.  I still say the list of schools he’d leave for is pretty short.  However, I didn’t think Auburn would be on there and supposedly he was one negotiating point from heading to Auburn.

It is weird. State and Ole Miss play both Bama & LSU in September in 2023. That has got to be a first in my lifetime. For Ole Miss @ Tulane will be a tough game. Road game @Georgia will be tough as well.
Pancho, you are correct that the Tulane game is very important in order for Ole Miss to have a successful season. With that schedule winning all four OOC is crucial for Ole Miss to get to 8 wins. SEC schedule is very difficult (trading KY for UGA is basically saying a W is now L) as they always are.
83, I think you are correct on Kiffin. He is using the NFL strategy of winning today. Though, with the salary he is pulling in, I am not sure why he wants to jump ship so quick. That has been his DNA through the years, so no real surprise there.
This will be his fourth season at Ole Miss which I am sure is a record for him.

Only SEC bowl game so far was Mizzou losing to Wake on Friday. Things start to pick up tomorrow with the Liberty Bowl and Texas Bowl.

I like Arkansas over Kansas. KU was a good story early on but really had a poor finish to the season. I kinda think the Hogs run all over them.

Going with a little bit of an upset in Houston and saying that Texas Tech beats Ole Miss. Tech finished the year hot and will be excited to play an SEC team, OM finished the year cold and I’ve kinda gotten the sense they don’t really want to be in this bowl. Expecting a shootout but going with the team I believe will be more up for the game. I think Tech made a strong hire with Joey McGuire and their OC Zach Kittley is one of fastest the rising stars in the coaching profession, he was at Houston Baptist two years ago.

Also, I was originally going to pick Illinois to beat State next week, but given the emotion of the Leach situation and the fact that Illinois has a bunch of key guys opting out plus nearly their entire defensive staff left for Purdue…. I’m picking State.

I was picking Illinois because of all the emotion going in.  Sometimes the start of the game is such a big deal that by the second half they have nothing left.

Emotions are going to be a factor in this game but I look for it to be a positive for State. At the beginning of the game it will be for sure but hopefully after the initial start of the game it will settle into a football game. Our players know that Coach Leach preached “play one play at a time and do your job.” I think our guys will do just that. I believe State wins one for the Coach.

Ole Miss beats Texas Tech tonight. TT will not be able to stop the run. TT will score as well. But I will say Ole Miss wins 38-27 pulling away late.

Illinois is a tough team to figure I out. I mentioned that they’ll have a bunch of key personnel out, but they were a weird team even at full strength. Very highly ranked defense, but so-so offense. Had their best season in a while and finished 8-4, but did so in an absolutely terrible division. Played Michigan closer than anybody else did, but also lost to 4-8 Indiana and 5-7 Michigan State.

I just don’t have a good read on what exactly they are as a team. I mean I know what a typical Bielema team looks like and that can be not fun to deal with. But other than that, I’m unsure. Vegas seems to be as well, this line has bounced all over the place. State opened as a favorite, then Illinois was favored, now State is back to being favored by 1.

With our DL at full strength I think we can at least keep their running game in check (not completely stop them but at least slow them down). They were not a high scoring team so if we can avoid turnovers on offense we should have the edge.
In bowl games, you just never know. But I just feel like our players are going to will this game into a win for Coach.

History has definitely been made tonight.  It’s the first time I’ve ever seen a cowbell with a Hotty Toddy on the back of an Ole Miss helmet.  I wonder if the Mike Leach sticker is on the back of that helmet with some resentment?  There shouldn’t be but I can’t help but wonder about that.

Almost all (maybe all?) SEC teams are wearing the Mike sticker with the cowbell as the "I" for Mike Leach.
