Dawg83
7-3 Illinois at the half. So far you can definitely tell that this is a very good Illinois defense playing a State offense that’s struggling without Leach and some key skill players. Dawg83
I take back what I said about Purdue and LSU. Lol.
Bulldogs4
Great finish by State!!! Dominated the LOS in the fourth quarter. Two turnovers in the first half cost us a chance to win by a bigger margin. Last play was wild. Thoroughly enjoyable!!!
Dawg83
Yeah just an all around great defensive performance by State. And I actually thought they played well offensively in the second half too. Definitely made plays when needed to make them. Very interesting to me that the two guys filling in for RaRa Thomas and Dillon Johnson had probably the two biggest plays of the day. Robinson and Price were both huge factors in the win.
MSTSatchmo
Big win for State and Arnett. Two very good defensive performances, but State controlled the LOS on both sides late. I think the majority of the country is happy for the State football program. Price had a big game making the most of his opportunity and big day for Robinson. I think that’s what State fans were expecting from him all year. Edited January 2, 2023 by MSTSatchmo
MSTSatchmo
How about Tulane and that comeback. Down 15 with 4 minutes left. I’ll have to admit, I was not upset that Williams took the L.

Dawg83
Going to be quite a few staff changes at State, particularly on offense. Not a huge surprise given that many of those guys were Leach guys. There’s apparently some chatter that State is pursuing Kendal Briles for the OC job. Apparently he and Pittman don’t see eye to eye on some things and he may be willing to leave Arkansas. Would be a really interesting hire if it goes down, but certainly nothing is final yet. I was just coming on to post about this, but what are your thoughts if that is the route that State wants to go? I don't know enough about him to express any kind of opinions, but would that be a good hire for State if they can pull it off?

Yes, I think Kendal is a very good OC and might already be a head coach if his last name wasn’t Briles. He’s been pretty adaptable at his different stops, so I wouldn’t necessarily assume his offense at State would look exactly like it does at Arkansas. That said, his offenses in Fayetteville have generally been good. And he’s also been the OC at Baylor, FAU, Houston, and Florida State. I would be on board with it and I think most would too. He doesn’t run the Air Raid but it’s a very modern offense that does incorporate some AR concepts.

If so, I think State fans would be extremely on board with him.

It would be a higher tempo and pace of play than anything State’s ever run. Apparently the beef between he and Pittman stems from Briles wanting to air it out more and Pittman wanting to ground and pound more. So my guess is he would be more pass heavy at State than he’s been at Arkansas, but also run the ball more than Leach did. We’ll see where this goes, it sounds like the two sides are definitely in discussion.

If this works out, the wheel won't have to be reinvented and he's already got a pass heavy offense to work with so hopefully something will come about. It almost sounds like a better offense for Chris Parson to get in.
maroontide06
I honestly think the recipe for Zach Arnett's success as a head coach in the short run will be to give autonomy to whichever Offensive Coordinator he hires, but still have the final stamp of approval and then let himself have control over the defensive side of the ball. It almost needs to be a Leach reversal of sorts kind of where Leach let Zach control the defense. I'm sure Leach had the final say on things as the Head Coach, but he pretty much let Zach do his thing and for Zach to let the Offensive Coordinator do his thing will probably bode well for Zach in the short term. The only reason why I say short term is because of the annual turnover with coaching staffs. Mike Leach proved to be the exception there and I'm glad we had that coaching stability under him. Dawg83
Even if Briles says no, I can appreciate Arnett swinging for the fences.

Did Mississippi State formally offer the job to Kendal? And if so does State have the necessary capital to hire him away? I would think they would, but you never know. What remains to be seen is how interested Briles actually is or if this is a Jimmy Sexton thing to get Arkansas to pay him more.
maroontide06
Something must be in the works though because Drew Hollingshead isn't being retained and neither is Steve Spurrier Jr., so lets see what happens in regards to the offense. There have been rumblings that Chad Bumphis may be the next WR coach, he’s had the same position at Utah the last few years.

maroontide06
I guess whoever State hires as it's next OC, they'll need to bring their luggage with them.
Dawg83
Bumphis to State is a done deal. Good for Chad, and I think he’ll really help with in-state recruiting. Yeah, State is definitely gonna need a QB from the portal. Right now the QB room is just Rogers and Chris Parson, who evidently may miss the spring due to injury. MSTSatchmo
Just for conversation, let’s say Briles becomes State’s OC. What happens to Rogers, and what are the odds Jefferson comes with Briles. Rogers is not mobile at all, and the QB that entered the portal today would have been better suited for the new offense. Or, as 83 said, does Briles adapt his offense for Rogers.
