State better hope that some of the other players, mainly Marks, haven’t taken some of Leach’s press remarks as personal as Johnson apparently did. They’ll make it work at RB. I’m honestly surprised that both Johnson and Marks stuck around for three years to split carries with one another in a pass heavy offense. Most of the inner workings of football stay within the gate post. Unfortunately, in todays world with instant communication, these kind of statements can be made on a whim. I remember growing up and I learned the lesson of when you are mad and/or hurt, write a letter but don’t mail it for a day. Next day reread and if you still want to mail it, then send it on. Often times that letter went to file 13. I have no idea what happened with this situation but in my opinion he probably sent this text as a reaction. Had he waited a day or two , I suspect his wording would be different. But it is out there now and cannot be taken back. The portal could have you “rebuilding” every year and the NIL has you begging players to stay and boosters to pay up. It is more business now than ever before. I wouldn’t doubt it, but Arnett has been courted before and stayed. I know LSU was very interested a couple of years ago. Part of it is coaches really like working for Leach because he leaves them alone. Another part is Arnett can be pretty demanding from what I understand. So he could leave but I could also see him staying. Leach has had better staff retention than any State coach in my lifetime to this point. You should have pretty much everybody on defense except for Forbes. Offense, just kinda gotta wait and see. It may be the Simeon Price show at RB, or one of those games where Leach decides to only run the ball about four times. State plays like 15 different receivers every game so they’ll have guys there. Here’s what I’ll say: if the defections are limited to just RaRa, Dillon, and (presumably) Zavion Thomas, I don’t think it’s the end of the world and you can replace some of that production via the portal. Where it would get messy is if you lose those guys and then some other key contributors decide to bail too. I forgot about Duncan, he is probably not playing either, though I would not consider him nearly the same caliber of player as Forbes. Jackie Matthews and Cam Young are both seniors that “declared for the draft” but both have said they’ll play in the bowl game. Zavion Thomas in the portal today, no real surprise. He’s a Louisiana kid and he is under the impression that LSU has a spot for him. For his sake I hope that’s true, something similar happened last year with another one of State’s young WR’s and he ended up left out in the cold by the big schools. Talented kid, excellent punt returner and probably has a bright future at WR too, though he was largely just a special teams guy for State this year. No lie, but State needs to do everything they can to get Dowdell in the boat. I know the Rebearsharks are going after him as well, but I’d much rather see him stay committed to Oregon than to go down that dark path. If State is able to land him he would be an immediate contributor to the team. I know for a fact he would do great things in Starkville. Navy RB was just inches away from a go ahead TD in second OT. But he fumbled the ball and Army recovered. Had Navy scored a TD they win the game IMO.
