I always felt like they kinda put Luke in a no win situation. He always felt like the stop gap coach that was just there to get them through probation. Never once thought he would be there long or had much shot of being a long term success. He was an Ole Miss guy that loved his school and he won an Egg Bowl where Nick Fitzgerald broke his ankle… those are pretty much the only reasons they went with him.

With Arnett, I could see a scenario where he really thrives. It’s far from a given, first time head coaches are a total roll of the dice. But unlike Luke, I can see a path forward for Arnett.

I saw you started a thread on the Genes Page vip football board about Kiffin vs. Arnett Social Media.  Well Kiffin wins there in a landslide because Arnett hasn't posted anything on his Twitter account since 2020.  I think he's a no frills kind of guy that can do without social media.  He's old school to the core and for some reason I kind of like that.

They are a good example of both extremes lol. Zach will probably have to be a little more active than he is, but Lane could stand to tone down some of the teenage girl stuff.

The OC hire for State feels really important considering you’ll have a first time head coach with a defensive background. The more I think about it, the more I don’t think you can promote from within on this one. Probably need an experienced play caller and there’s not one currently on staff.

State is paying Arnett $3M a year, which is almost half of what they were paying Leach, so they can afford to splurge on a coordinator here. I would expect them to go with a Leach disciple, though I’m not hearing any specific names yet. If it were my hire, I would make Zach Kittley at Texas Tech tell me no. If that doesn’t work I’d look at Seth Littrell (recently fired North Texas head coach) or Graham Harrell (West Virginia). And if that doesn’t work I’d turn to someone like Chris Hatcher (Samford head coach).

It almost sounds like you’ll need to make a couple of hires on the offensive side unless the future OC also doubles as QB Coach as well.  I don’t think they’ll completely abandon the air raid, but hopefully we can have more of a running threat with the QB position.

The main concern for improvement would be how to get something positive out of a play when the pocket breaks down.  The QB should be aware most of the time when this happens so it requires quick decision making.  Chances are there’s probably a running lane somewhere to get some positive yardage instead of throwing an incompletion or taking a sack which could have been avoided.

I’m not sure which one it was, but one of the coaches that 83 mentioned I read runs the Air Raid but still runs the football around 40% of the time.

You’d think the Air Raid is most effective throwing 50+ times to 10+ different guys, but some nights you’re just going to need to run the football.

I could be 100% wrong on this, but it seems like the Air Raid works 500 times better when there’s an effective and established running game.  You certainly don’t have to run the football a majority of the time either and by doing that you avoid getting vanilla on offense.

Leach was basically the only coach still running the pure Air Raid the same way he and Mumme designed it at Iowa Wesleyan 30+ years ago. That’s not a knock, he was still winning games with that system this season. But his disciples have done some things to adapt it over the years and incorporated more runs.

Point being, unless State just promotes Spurrier or Miller to OC and they keep running the Mike Leach playbook (more of a pamphlet or a flyer than a book, lol), any outside OC hire is going to have an offense that looks at least a little different from what Leach did, and that’s including other Air Raid coaches.

Do you think we will emphasize running the football more next year or do you think they will try to keep the Leach playsheet intact?

Depends on the OC, but most likely they run it a little more than Leach teams did. Although State ran the ball a good bit more this year than they did in Leach’s first two years. Particularly in the Arkansas game and the Egg Bowl.

Was Ole Miss intentionally mediocre on signing day?  It seems like they were that way for a reason.  Is Lane just a portal guy or something?  Because if that’s the case I can understand why they didn’t put much emphasis on signing day.

I think they had 11 signees and 7 were 4* players.  That’s quality players just not quantity.  Losing the QB to A&M hurt, but I’m sure they’ll throw some money around in the portal.
Everyone keeps saying “Kiffin is a portal guy”, but this is really just the second year with a full portal.  He did go all in last year, and I would imagine it wasn’t the plan this year, but just worked out like it has.
State’s coaching did a great job under the circumstances.
Now the question is how many of these high school players nationwide will leave after their first year.  Lol.  Signing day just doesn’t seem like the big deal it used to be.

Kiffin’s portal strategy is a very boom or bust one. And kinda suggests that he’s “here for a good time, not here for a long time” as some might say.

If you hit on those guys then it’s all good, but if you miss on the majority of them then it can really hurt you in the short term and long term.
