rebmus
Ole Miss most likely needs 22 wins (regular season) to be "comfortable" about an NCAAT bid. The next 6 games are: @ MSU South Carolina #20 Alabama #13 @ Missouri @ Georgia Texas A&M It's definitely doable to get 3 of those, but every one of them is a loss if Ole Miss plays like they did Saturday. I think you may need 4 of them be in comfortably. 3-3 and it’s going to come down to the conference tourneys. The good news is it’s not THAT bad of a closing schedule for OM. Winnable road games and the toughest game remaining is in Oxford.
Dawg83
As of today, kinda still where we were a week ago. Lunardi has State just slightly above the bubble teams and Ole Miss as one of the Last 4 In. Edited February 20, 2024 by Dawg83
Dawg83
A&M just ate the home loss that State nearly did to Arkansas. Aggies are in trouble.

Regular season wins: 23 is a "lock" 22 is "should be in" 21 is "last 4 in/out" and probably out. Anything less than 21 regular season wins means Ole Miss needs to reach the SECT final or likely win the SECT to get a bid.
Bulldogs4
Arkansas and Missouri are playing better basketball. Not really two teams that you want to face down the stretch. And I know Mizzou is winless but they were competitive with Tennessee tonight. Ole Miss can’t afford to overlook them when they go up there for the second round. Arkansas is not a team I’d want to see in the SEC tourney because losing to them hurts you but they’re talented enough to make a run into the weekend. Dawg83
Boy, State just has not shown that they can defend Ole Miss through a game and a half against them. Just a poor job of State sticking to their identity so far. For the billionth time, they aren’t built to win a track meet. Insideradvantage
Smith had a thousand points and made free throws and yet we still lead after a 16 point turnaround. Interesting.
Dawg83
I don’t know what Murell did in the offseason but that guy is a completely different player than he was last year. Just a big time scorer now.

rebmus
MSU dominated this game early, Ole Miss stormed back to take a 4 point lead by halftime. MSU dominating the second half so far, does Ole Miss have enough left to make a fight in the last 9 minutes?

Bulldogs4
Big win for State. Biggest stat was State not turning the ball over and playing solid defense in the second half. Free Throw shooting was still crap shoot though. But very glad for the win. Another great atmosphere for this game. Ole Miss is still so scary though. rebmus
Ole Miss put up a fight at times, but MSU won at home as expected. Unless MSU blows a game or two they shouldn't lose, they'll be in the NCAAT. Ole Miss has work to do to get an NCAAT bid.
maroontide06
Great 2nd half adjustments by Coach Jans. Solid win for State. I’m just glad it didn’t depend upon free throw shooting LOL.
Dawg83
State’s defense was the story of the second half, OM looked very uncomfortable after the break. State also got some outstanding minutes from their bench guys on a night where Hubbard didn’t do much. Gotta like the spot State is in now, another win or two and you’re playing for seeding rather than to merely make the tourney. For Ole Miss, it’s getting late early. Margin for error is all the way gone now, a lot of must win games the rest of the way.
Bulldogs4
LSU just beat Kentucky. Saturday night has the makings for one heck of a game in Red Stick.

Was about to post that. And it’s kind of a free shot for State on the road, as a loss shouldn’t really hurt and a win would all but solidify your tourney status. I think if State can split the next two games (LSU and Kentucky) you take it all day. Ole Miss hosting South Carolina on Saturday, without question a must win for OM. In a sense I see what you’re saying, but again it’s just giving you like zero margin for error. You’re a bubble team that’s now lost 4 of 5. Even if none of them have been “bad” losses, it also creates an absence of quality wins. OM is now in a spot where they have to go at least 3-2 in the last 5 and possibly 4-1. You may be able to do it ultimately. But the point is you don’t have much of a choice now. Time to win some games or prepare for the NIT. Bulldogs4
I actually like State chances against LSU Saturday night. We have a veteran team that I believe will keep an even keel even though it was big win over our rival tonight LSU OTOH has won two huge back to back nail biters on last second shots. They could very well be a bit flat Saturday night. Now you never know how a game on the road is going to go but it sets up reasonably well for State with LSU coming off just playing Kentucky. Dawg83
State’s free throw woes are frustrating but if you look at it closely it’s really just two guys. Tolu and Cam take the most FT’s on the team by far and are easily the worst two FT shooters. The rest of the team shoots something like 70%. Dawg83
State’s noncon win vs Washington State has aged like fine wine. They won at Arizona last night and now have a Top 30 NET and are in first place in the PAC 12.
